Traditional music education places a large emphasis on individual practice. Studies have shown that individual practice is frequently not very productive due to limited feedback and students lacking interest and motivation. In this paper we explore the use of augmented reality to create an immersive experience to improve the efficiency of learning of beginner piano students. The objective is to stimulate development in notation literacy and to create motivation through presenting as a game the task that was perceived as a chore. This is done by identifying successful concepts from existing systems and merging them into a new system designed to be used with a head mounted display. The student is able to visually monitor their practice and have fun while doing so. An informal user study indicates that the system initially puts some pressure on users, but that participants find it helpful and believe that it improves learning. © 2013, Australian computer Society, Inc.

Palmprint De-Identification Using Diffusion Model for High-Quality and Diverse Synthesis

Palmprint recognition techniques have advanced significantly in recent years, enabling reliable recognition even when palmprints are captured in uncontrolled or challenging environments. However, this strength also introduces new risks, as publicly available palmprint images can be misused by adversaries for malicious activities. Despite this growing concern, research on methods to obscure or anonymize palmprints remains largely unexplored. Thus, it is essential to develop a palmprint de-identification technique capable of removing identity-revealing features while retaining the image’s utility and preserving nonsensitive information. In this paper, we propose a training-free framework that utilizes pre-trained diffusion models to generate diverse, high-quality palmprint images that conceal identity features for de-identification purposes. To ensure greater stability and controllability in the synthesis process, we incorporate a semantic-guided embedding fusion alongside a prior interpolation mechanism. We further propose the de-identification ratio, a novel metric for intuitive de-identification assessment. Extensive experiments across multiple palmprint datasets and recognition methods demonstrate that our method effectively conceals identity-related traits with significant diversity across de-identified samples. The de-identified samples preserve high visual fidelity and maintain excellent usability, achieving a balance between de-identification and retaining non-identity information. Today enterprises are facing rapid and radical changes in business environments, making business agility a crucial step toward gaining competitive advantages over rivals. Service-oriented architectures (SOA) are touted as the key to business agility. However to deliver business agility with SOA effectively, business services should be designed according to SOA principles that affect business agility, including autonomy, cohesion and structural complexity. In this paper we propose a set of metrics to measure service accordance with these principles. A controlled case study is also provided to validate the applicability and correctness of the proposed metrics. © 2011 IEEE.

Reusability is one of the most prominent service principles that can reduce cost of solution ownership when design services for reuse. The concept of reuse is supported by and can enable a number of complementary service principles that makes its analysis complicated. However, well-engineered business capabilities could be encapsulates within a well-designed interface to produce more reusable composite services. There are several prescriptive guidelines help to ensure that your service candidates attain a balance of proper logic encapsulation and adherence to the standard description, but there is no quantitative metric to get ensured that a given composite service has and to what extent different versions of a composite service differ in reusability capability. This work is to propose a quantitative metric to measure the reusability of composite services. The approach is based on the analysis of Description and Logic Mismatch Probability of a composite service will be reused within potential solutions. By adopting this metric, service reusability analysis could be conduct quantitatively that leads to realize an optimized service-oriented solution in terms of its reusability. © 2010 ACM.

Most of the focus in business process modeling (BPM) is on activity-centric;however an emerging approach in the field is entity-centric which benefits from various enhancements in contrast to former approaches. As a consequence, entity-centric business services as the external view of a group of business processes within an organization are getting more importance in contrast to the other types of business services. These types of services are more powerful than task-centric services in terms of being more reusable, and needing less effort to redesign and redevelop when satisfying new requirements. Therefore, it is critical to quantitatively measure structural properties of such services. Since entity-centric design approaches are emerging in service-oriented paradigm, there is no comprehensive metric to measure the degree of service cohesion. This paper aims to address this issue by providing a novel cohesion metric that takes into account the relations between the entities used by shared operations. The metric are empirically evaluated in a small-scaled controlled study.

Process patterns represent well-structured and successful recurring activities of software Development Methodologies (SDMs). They are able to form a library of reusable building blocks that can be utilized in Situational Method engineering (SME) for constructing a custom SDM or enhancing an existing one to fit specific project situation. Recently, some researchers have subjectively extracted process patterns from existing SDMs based on cumulative experience in various domains;however, how to objectively extract process patterns from SDMs by adopting a systematic procedure has remained as question. In this regard, this paper is concerned with a procedure aiming to take process patterns out of existing SDMs. An example illustrates applicability of the proposed procedure for extracting process patterns in a specific context. © 2010 IEEE.

Urbanization has been an increasing trend that has lead to higher population densities in cities worldwide. Providing these large amounts of citizens with a high quality of living is one of the main goals of future smart cities. A high quality of living requires the smart city to offer several services, many of them supported by a sophisticated, power-intensive IT infrastructure. We present a cooperation scheme between smart city and data centres that allows for an effective use of power flexibilities inherently available in data centres. By adapting the power demand of data centres to the availability of renewable energy, smart city goals like a low carbon emission of its IT infrastructure become achievable. To this end, a demand side management scheme under orchestration of a central control system is proposed. The concrete guidelines on power use for data centres are calculated by a component named "Ideal Power Planner", based on smart city goals and renewable power availability forecasts. The effectiveness of the developed approach has been validated in three testbeds. © 2015 ACM.

Packet-combining schemes are an attractive improvement to ARQ schemes, since they allow receivers to keep the good parts of an otherwise erroneous packet and use these with good parts from subsequent packets to allow for quicker decoding. In the previous paper [1] a memory-efficient hard-decision packet combining scheme has been described and analysed, which relies on intermediate checksums spread into the user data part of a packet. In this paper we provide experimental data on the performance of the proposed packet-combining scheme, showing that a significant percentage of the wireless links found in a large indoor wireless testbed (the TKN TWIST testbed [2]) indeed benefits from introducing such a packet-combining scheme. © 2010 IEEE.

In the field of image-based drug discovery, capturing the phenotypic response of cells to various drug treatments and perturbations is a crucial step. This process involves transforming high-throughput cellular images into quantitative representations for downstream analysis. However, existing methods require computationally extensive and complex multi-step procedures, which can introduce inefficiencies, limit generalizability, and increase potential errors. To address these challenges, we present PhenoProfiler, an innovative model designed to efficiently and effectively extract morphological representations, enabling the elucidation of phenotypic changes induced by treatments. PhenoProfiler is designed as an end-to-end tool that processes whole-slide multi-channel images directly into low-dimensional quantitative representations, eliminating the extensive computational steps required by existing methods. It also includes a multi-objective learning module to enhance robustness, accuracy, and generalization in morphological representation learning. PhenoProfiler is rigorously evaluated on large-scale publicly available datasets, including over 230,000 whole-slide multi-channel images in end-to-end scenarios and more than 8.42 million single-cell images in non-end-to-end settings. Across these benchmarks, PhenoProfiler consistently outperforms state-of-the-art methods by up to 20%, demonstrating substantial improvements in both accuracy and robustness. Furthermore, PhenoProfiler uses a tailored phenotype correction strategy to emphasize relative phenotypic changes under treatments, facilitating the detection of biologically meaningful signals. UMAP visualizations of treatment profiles demonstrate PhenoProfiler’s ability to effectively cluster treatments with similar biological annotations, thereby enhancing interpretability. These findings establish PhenoProfiler as a scalable, generalizable, and robust tool for phenotypic learning, offering transformative advancement

Model driven design and development of real-time embedded systems has been gaining a lot of attention in the recent past. It is imperative for a hard real-time embedded system to execute and respond to sequenced exchanges of messages under critical temporal constraints. The UML provides artifacts such as communication diagrams, sequence diagrams and timing diagrams to aid software engineers to model and precisely document such a schedule of interactions or state changes at the design level. While modeling at the design level is interesting on one hand, it is also significant to understand the run time behavior of the embedded software. A step forward in this direction is to provide a real-time representation of the target system behavior on the host side. We propose an approach to realize a target debugger on the host side with a monitor solution in the target side. With the back annotated information from the target, a visual representation of the system behavior in real-time is now available at the design level. This way, a debugging solution in real-time is provided, thus taking a step forward towards understanding the behavior of the embedded software at hand. We illustrate our proposed approach with a prototype and examples.
