Advances in intensive care have improved the survival rate of patients with severe acute brain injury, but diagnostic errors for patients with disorders of consciousness are still high. Accurate diagnosis of these patients is very important because effective treatment can vary depending on the diagnosis. In this study, we propose a framework for classifying unresponsive wakefulness syndrome and minimally conscious state, focusing on awareness. In particular, power spectral density and common spatial patterns were used together, considering that spatial information is a key feature in consciousness. The 16 patients with unresponsive wakefulness syndrome and 14 with minimally conscious state underwent resting-state electroencephalography measurements. In addition, we compared the performance by utilizing each frequency (delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma bands) related to consciousness. As a result, the highest accuracy of 95.06% was achieved by the EEGNet classifier, especially in the beta frequency band. We demonstrated that spatial information is very important in consciousness, as we observed that classification performance improved when common spatial patterns were used. These results provide insight into various frameworks for diagnosing patients with disorders of consciousness and may help patients survive by increasing the diagnosis rate in the future.

In this paper, we propose a taxonomy that characterizes and classifies different components of autonomic application management in Grids. We also survey several representative Grid systems developed by various projects world-wide to demonstrate the comprehensiveness of the taxonomy. The taxonomy not only highlights the similarities and differences of state-of-the-art technologies utilized in autonomic application management from the perspective of Grid computing, but also identifies the areas that require further research initiatives. © 2010 IEEE.

A stock market data processing system that can handle high data volumes at low latencies is critical to market makers. Such systems play a critical role in algorithmic trading, risk analysis, market surveillance, and many other related areas. We show that such a system can be built with general-purpose middleware and run on commodity hardware. The middleware we use is IBM System S, which has been augmented with transport technology from IBM WebSphere MQ Low Latency Messaging. Using eight commodity x86 blades connected with Ethernet and Infiniband, this system can achieve 80 μsec average latency at 3 times the February 2008 options market data rate and 206 μsec average latency at 15 times the February 2008 rate. In this paper, a reputation-based Grid workflow scheduling algorithm is proposed to counter the effect of inherent unreliability and temporal characteristics of computing resources in large scale, decentralized Grid overlays. The proposed approach builds upon structured peer-to-peer indexing and overlay networking techniques to create a scalable wide-area networking of Grid sites for supporting dependable scheduling of applications. The scheduling algorithm considers reliability of a Grid resource as a statistical property, which is globally computed in the decentralized Grid overlay based on dynamic feedbacks or reputation scores assigned by individual service consumers (Grid Resource Brokers). The proposed algorithm can dynamically adapt to changing resource conditions and offer significant performance gains as compared to traditional approaches in the event of unsuccessful job execution or resource failure. We evaluate and demonstrate the feasibility of our approach through an extensive trace driven simulation. The results show that our scheduling technique can reduce the makespan up to 50% and successfully isolate the failure-prone resources from the system. © 2009 IEEE.

Privacy engineering, as an emerging field of research and practice, comprises the technical capabilities and management processes needed to implement, deploy, and operate privacy features and controls in working systems. For that, software practitioners and other stakeholders in software companies need to work cooperatively toward building privacy-preserving businesses and engineering solutions. Significant research has been done to understand the software practitioners' perceptions of information privacy, but more emphasis should be given to the uptake of concrete privacy engineering components. This research delves into the software practitioners' perspectives and mindset, organizational aspects, and current practices on privacy and its engineering processes. A total of 30 practitioners from nine countries and backgrounds were interviewed, sharing their experiences and voicing their opinions on a broad range of privacy topics. The thematic analysis methodology was adopted to code the interview data qualitatively and construct a rich and nuanced thematic framework. As a result, we identified three critical interconnected themes that compose our thematic framework for privacy engineering 'in the wild': (1) personal privacy mindset and stance, categorised into practitioners' privacy knowledge, attitudes and behaviours;(2) organizational privacy aspects, such as decision-power and positive and negative examples of privacy climate;and, (3) privacy engineering practices, such as procedures and controls concretely used in the industry. Among the main findings, this study provides many insights about the state-of-the-practice of privacy engineering, pointing to a positive influence of privacy laws (e.g., EU General Data Protection Regulation) on practitioners' behaviours and organizations' cultures. An intelligent scheduling algorithm based on multi-agents and genetic algorithm is proposed to overcome flexible job-shop automation and optimization problems in manufacturing industry. The algorithm is made of a management-agent, a scheduling-agent and machine-agents. Static scheduling is realized by a customized genetic algorithm, while dynamic scheduling is realized by these coordinative agents. Several scenarios are used to illustrate that the proposed system is practical, efficient and advanced. © 2011 IEEE.

Opportunistic, mobility-assisted, or encounter networking is a method based on ad hoc networking and introduced to disseminate data in a store-and-forward manner by means of spontaneously connecting mobile devices. Although, in many networked systems, mobility is treated as a challenge requiring additional management, in opportunistic networks, movement facilitates networking as it creates additional contacts between devices. These new networking opportunities can be exploited in addition to traditional wireless infrastructure networks or in absence of these networks. Hereby, algorithms for opportunistic data dissemination make use of information about social ties, regularities in movement, and the future path of mobile entities. The availability of this information is reasonable for areas such as campuses or conference venues, where social or professional ties are strong or when traveling by, for example, public transport lines or vehicles following a navigation system. Other movement activities of humans in larger areas often lack this information, and new techniques are required to derive similar useful movement information. By observing movement characteristics of network users such as average velocities or revisiting patterns, estimates about the likelihood of getting in contact with other devices can be estimated. Our approach goes one step further by introducing users' movement activities derived from movement patterns typical in, for example, tourist movement, shopping activities, or evening activities. Movement activities are notions summarizing a particular movement situation that is meaningful to users and can be used to further estimate user needs and user-generated network traffic. In case movement patterns are uncertain or fragmentary, knowledge about activities may help to faster estimate average movement characteristics. Efficient scheduling is a key concern for the effectual execution of performance driven Grid applications, such as workflows. Many list heuristics have been developed for scheduling workflows in centralized Grid environment. However, in this paper, we present a distributed list heuristic for decentralized scheduling of workflow applications in global Grids. The simulation results show that the proposed scheduling approach is scalable with respect to increased workload on the system. © 2009 IEEE.

Standards such as ISO 13849 and ISO 12100 enable users to model safety related control elements with safety functions, according to a specified architecture and required performance level. In this direction, a novel Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based assistant is introduced in this paper to aid in determining the required performance level parameter by indulging the user in a dialog-based conversation regarding hazard scenarios. This will help inexperienced machinery safety personnel (e.g. mechanical engineer) to get an overview of the safety engineering aspects, before consulting with safety experts for risk assessment. © 2022 IEEE.

As UML statechart diagrams are the core for modeling the dynamic aspects of software systems, we have been studying their understandability for the last three years. In previous researches, we have already studied the relationship between many of the constructs of the UML statechart diagrams and the effect that they have on the understandability of the diagrams themselves. We have also performed a family of experiments whose results indicated that the use of composite states make UML statechart diagrams easier to understand. This fact motivated us to go a step further and investigate if the Nesting Level of Composites States (NLCS) has an impact on the understanding of the diagrams through a controlled experiment and a replication. In this paper, we present the experimental process and the main findings of them. Unfortunately, the obtained results are not quite conclusive and we have not been able to find an optimal use of nesting within UML statechart diagrams and further empirical research is needed, considering more complex UML statechart diagrams. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.
