—Electronically steerable parasitic array radiator (ESPAR) technology enables the implementation of antenna arrays of a number of elements with a single radio frequency (RF) source. Two approaches to achieve stable transmission using an ESPAR antenna (EA) are to increase the self-resistance of an EA or to transmit signals closely approximating the actual signals that keep the EA stable. Both approaches did not take into account the impact of limited power on an EA transmission, which is a practical constraint on power amplifier design. We propose a new transmission scheme to enable an EA to provide stable multiple antenna functionality taking into account the instantaneous total power requirement. This problem is formulated as a non-convex optimization problem and it is solved analytically by coordinate transformation and geometric analysis. The optimal approximate signals are obtained using root finding and interior-point algorithms. Moreover, it is shown through simulations that our proposed scheme achieves similar symbol error rate performance to that of the standard multiple antenna transmitter with multiple RF chains under power limited single-user and multi-user transmission scenarios. Furthermore, it is shown that increasing the self-resistance of an EA to achieve stability is highly power inefficient. © 2017 IEEE.

Extracting build changes with builddiff

Build systems are an essential part of modern software engineering projects. As software projects change continuously, it is crucial to understand how the build system changes because neglecting its maintenance can lead to expensive build breakage. Recent studies have investigated the (co-)evolution of build configurations and reasons for build breakage, but they did this only on a coarse grained level. In this paper, we present BUILDDIFF, an approach to extract detailed build changes from MAVEN build files and classify them into 95 change types. In a manual evaluation of 400 build changing commits, we show that BUILDDIFF can extract and classify build changes with an average precision and recall of 0.96 and 0.98, respectively. We then present two studies using the build changes extracted from 30 open source Java projects to study the frequency and time of build changes. The results show that the top 10 most frequent change types account for 73% of the build changes. Among them, changes to version numbers and changes to dependencies of the projects occur most frequently. Furthermore, our results show that build changes occur frequently around releases. With these results, we provide the basis for further research, such as for analyzing the (co-)evolution of build files with other artifacts or improving effort estimation approaches. Furthermore, our detailed change information enables improvements of refactoring approaches for build configurations and improvements of models to identify error-prone build files. Feature selection is one of the important challenges in variability-intensive systems. The FCORE model is used for the description of the functional and non-functional requirements of a system from a systems engineering point of view. In addition we demonstrate a solution for feature selection using a regulator algorithm (RGA). The RGA is a two dimensional evolutionary algorithm, with regulator genes controlling the structural genes. This allows a direct transfer of the FCORE model into the RGA, which optimizes the feature selection without constraint violations.

Mobile technology is a suitable tool to be used for learning purposes. Many research studies prove the benefits of Mobile Learning (m-learning) in various education disciplines. Following this trend, our study examined a post-graduate class consisting of 474 learners in which Short Message Service (SMS) was used. The main goal was to find out if this technology would increase student participation in the course. The lecture series were implemented by using a blended learning approach, in which the courses combine face-to-face classes with online activities. Two groups of learners were created, control and experimental, in order to analyze the activities' fulfillment rate and the response time. The results from the data analysis showed that students who received mobile messaging outperformed significantly students from the control group. The experimental group had better results both in completion rate and response time. They were almost 20% more effective at completing their assigned activity and up to 78 hours faster than students from the control group. In addition, a questionnaire answered by the experimental group demonstrated that participants were very satisfied with the usage of this technology and were enthusiastic about the use of messages on the course. © 2016 ACM.

Automated Toll Collection System (ATCS) is one of the technologies to fulfill the Intelligent Transportation System's (ITS) aim in providing an efficient road and transportation infrastructure at the expressway. This paper is aimed to provide an accurate and efficient ATCS based on a vehicle type classification method rather than the current implementation of toll collection that rely on sensor-based and human observation. To fulfill the aim, we proposed to implement SF-CNNLS framework to extract vehicle's features and classify it into class 1 (passenger vehicle), class 2 (lorry) and class 4 (taxi). This ATCS is aimed to enhance the efficiency of the toll collection in Malaysia. The biggest challenge in this research is how to discriminate features of class 4 as a different class of class 1 since both classes have almost identical features. However, with our proposed method, we able to classify the vehicle with the average accuracy of 90.83 %. We tested our method using a frontal view of a vehicle from the self-obtained database (SPINT) taken using mounted-camera at the toll booth and compare the classification performance with a benchmark database named BIT.

This is a small research-creation interactive augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) documentary prototype. Its design extends the predecessor AR mobile app component incorporating AR footage previously only available in traditional mobile screen into a VR world. The mobile app prototype runs on iOS and Android and integrates interactive 3D models and objects in the VR world, the previous app did not have in an effort to increase engagement and educational aspects appealing to a wider audience. The focus of this project is to enhance user engagement and create immersion for interactive documentaries by combining Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality in order to create virtual worlds where users can enjoy watching, hearing, and reading content. We develop Illimitable Space System v3 as inspired by v1 in early days that used both motion capture and initial lower end augmented reality setup. ©2016 ACM.

Objective: To identify and quantify risk factors for incident knee osteoarthritis (KOA) across the lifespan. Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis identified eligible studies from seven electronic databases and three registries. Longitudinal cohort studies or randomised controlled trials evaluating participants who developed incident symptomatic and/or radiographic KOA were included. Two independent reviewers completed data screening and extraction. Estimates were pooled using a random effects model and reported as odds ratio (OR), hazard ratio, or risk ratio and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation was used to determine the certainty of evidence. Population attributable fractions were calculated, including risk factors significantly associated with radiographic KOA based on the pooled meta-analysis and where we could determine communality scores using existing clinical datasets. Results: We identified 131 studies evaluating > 150 risk factors. Previous knee injury, older age and high bone mineral density were associated with an increased risk of incident radiographic KOA based on the pooled analysis [OR (95% CI): 2.67 (1.41, 5.05), 1.15 (1.00, 1.33) and 1.82 (1.12, 2.94), respectively], with moderate-to-high certainty. Two risk factors (overweight/obesity and previous knee injury) accounted for 14% of incident radiographic KOA. Other modifiable risk factors, including occupational physical activity, also contribute to radiographic or symptomatic KOA. Conclusion: Novel strategies addressing known modifiable risk factors including overweight/obesity, knee injuries and occupational physical activity are needed to reduce overall burden of KOA.
