In this paper, a review on radio-over-fiber (RoF) technology is conducted to support the exploding growth of mobile broadband. An RoF system will provide a platform for distributed antenna system (DAS) as a fronthaul of long term evolution (LTE) technology. A higher splitting ratio from a macrocell is required to support large DAS topology, hence higher optical launch power (OLP) is the right approach. However, high OLP generates undesired nonlinearities, namely the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). Three different aspects of solving the SBS process are covered in this paper, where the solutions ultimately provided an additional 4 dB link budget.

The main quest for cloud stakeholders is to find an optimal deployment architecture for cloud applications that maximizes availability, minimizes cost, and addresses portability and scalability. Unfortunately, the lack of a unified definition and adequate modeling language and methodologies that address the cloud domain specific characteristics makes architecting efficient cloud applications a daunting task. This paper introduces Stratus ML: a technology agnostic integrated modeling framework for cloud applications. Stratus ML provides an intuitive user interface that allows the cloud stakeholders (i.e., providers, developers, administrators, and financial decision makers) to define their application services, configure them, specify the applications' behaviour at runtime through a set of adaptation rules, and estimate cost under diverse cloud platforms and configurations. Moreover, through a set of model transformation templates, Stratus ML maintains consistency between the various artifacts of cloud applications. This paper presents Stratus ML and illustrates its usefulness and practical applicability from different stakeholder perspectives. A demo video, usage scenario and other relevant information can be found at the Stratus ML webpage.

Since security is increasingly the principal concern in the conception and implementation of software systems, it is very important that the security mechanisms are designed so as to protect the computer systems against cyber attacks. An Intrusion Tolerance Systems play a crucial role in maintaining the service continuity and enhancing the security compared with the traditional security. In this paper, we propose to combine a preventive maintenance with existing intrusion tolerance system to improve the system security. We use a semi-Markov process to model the system behavior. We quantitatively analyze the system security using the measures such as system availability, Mean Time To Security Failure and cost. The numerical analysis is presented to show the feasibility of the proposed approach.

Security assessment and mitigation have gained considerable attention over the recent years according to the information technology evolution and its broad adoption. Organizations are more aware of their data security, and they also have become more exigent in terms of extensibility and flexibility of their Information Technology infrastructures. Cloud computing is introduced as an evolution of information technology that offers major solutions and techniques to meet the evolving requirements of both tenants and clients. Therefore, extensibility and dynamic adjustment, which are among the most essential Cloud advantages, can make the security analysis a very hard task. There have been many approaches to analyze automatically the cyber security of traditional IT infrastructures without taking into account the new Cloud features, such as the nested virtualization. Until now, there is a few work to assess the security of Cloud computing. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to design and develop Model-based Automated Security Assessment Tool named MASAT.

Memory performance is of great importance to achieve high performance on the Nvidia CUDA GPU. Previous work has proposed specific optimizations such as thread coarsening, caching data in shared memory, and global data layout transformation. We argue that vectorization based on hyper loop parallelism can be used as a unified technique to optimize the memory performance. In this paper, we put forward a compiler framework based on the Cetus source-tosource compiler to improve the memory performance on the CUDA GPU by efficiently exploiting hyper loop parallelism in vectorization. We introduce abstractions of SIMD vectors and SIMD operations that match the execution model and memory model of the CUDA GPU, along with three different execution mapping strategies for efficiently offloading vectorized code to CUDA GPUs. In addition, as we employ the vectorization in C-to-CUDA with automatic parallelization, our technique further refines the mapping granularity between coarse-grain loop parallelism and GPU threads. We evaluated our proposed technique on two platforms, an embedded GPU system —Jetson TK1 — and a desktop GPU - GeForce GTX 645. The experimental results demonstrate that our vectorization technique based on hyper loop parallelism can yield performance speedups up to 2.5 x compared to the direct coarse-grain loop parallelism mapping.

At the RELENG 2014 Q&A, the question was asked, “What is your greatest concern?” and the response was “someone subverting our deployment pipeline”. That is the motivation for this paper. We explore what it means to subvert a pipeline and provide several different scenarios of subversion. We then focus on the issue of securing a pipeline. As a result, we provide an engineering process that is based on having trusted components mediate access to sensitive portions of the pipeline from other components, which can remain untrusted. Applying our process to a pipeline we constructed involving Chef, Jenkins, Docker, Github, and AWS, we find that some aspects of our process result in easy to make changes to the pipeline, whereas others are more difficult. Consequently, we have developed a design that hardens the pipeline, although it does not yet completely secure it.

On Internet of Things (IoT), everything can be accessed anytime, anywhere, and works without human intervention. In IoT everything collaborates to deliver services and applications to users, Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) being one of these applications. Some AAL smart homes uses infrared sensors to recognize some activities of daily living and to track people along the environment. Location tracking is vital in Ambient Assisted living and can be a useful information to improve AAL systems. A common problem in such systems is that each tracking model is based on a specific sensor's placing architecture. In order to assure that the system will work properly, the model has to be fitted by an expert. Modeling is usually costly and it relies on a specific architecture. In our previous work, the tracking model needed to be fitted manually. In order to introduce adaptability, this work proposes an approach to automatically fit the model avoiding the need of an expert to fit a different model for each kind of sensor's placing architecture. The proposed approach was evaluated using real data from a set of pyroelectric infrared sensors and a set of scenarios performed in a simulated apartment. © 2015 IEEE.

Ultracapacitors (UCs) are the significant component of the energy storage systems (ESS) in the electric traction applications. In the field of electric transportation the UCs need to be modeled dynamically in order to capture real-time characteristics. The model should provide precise estimation of UC responses to various charge/discharge conditions and also predict the behavior of UCs under varied load conditions. In order to incorporate the model for testing purposes in various power electronics/drive simulation toolboxes, it is very important for the model to be accurate. This paper aims at the experimental validation of an accurate parameter identification procedure for an UC model using random charging/discharging current pulses of different magnitudes. The UC model can estimate the output voltage without the extraction of the model's branch parameters. The critical parameters have been estimated dynamically from characteristic equations. The estimation technique for an equivalent RC branch model is simulated and the output voltage response, controlled between Vmm (0V) and Vrated (2.7V) of a single UC cell, has been presented. Finally, the simulation results obtained from the identification technique are validated against the actual charging results obtained from applying charging pulses to a 1200F UC.

The phenomenon of adopting open source software development practices in a corporate environment is known by many names, one being inner source. The objective of this study is to investigate how an organization consisting of small development teams can benefit from adopting inner source and assess the level of applicability. The research has been conducted as a case study at a software development company. Data collection was carried out through interviews and a series of focus group meetings, and then analyzed by mapping it to an available framework. The analysis shows that the organization possesses potential, and also identified a number of challenges and benefits of special importance to the case company. To address these challenges, the case study synthesized the organizational and infrastructural needs of the organization in a requirements specification describing a technical infrastructure, also known as a software forge, with an adapted organizational context and work process. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

In the domain of embedded systems, the complexities involved in embedded software development are being successfully addressed by the emerging field of model-based software development and testing. However, in embedded systems, the underlying embedded software is often expected to collaborate with various hardware, mechanical, electrical modules/technologies. To address this aspect of heterogeneity in embedded systems, practitioners of model-based embedded software engineering are required to use more than one modeling language. This is essential to address the multi-faceted design aspects/requirements of an embedded system. This paper elaborates on the existing data interchange and coupling mechanisms between embedded software sub-systems modeled using UML and Matlab/Simulink. While there are some existing coupling mechanisms for data exchange among heterogenous modeling domains, they are all not applicable to all real-time operating systems and/or limited to a few simulation studies. This paper addresses the aforementioned gaps and proposes a simple, generic methodology for data exchange between events (in UML domain) and signals (in Matlab/Simulink domain). The proposed approach is elaborated using a seesaw (real-word) embedded software system application scenario example. Initial prototype implementation of the proposed approach, experimental results and some future directions are outlined.
