In this paper, we propose a series of applications that represent a system family for processing research Data. The whole system is a model of complete data flow of "research", from data capturing, processing, until intelligent data analysis. Data engineering, software engineering, Domain engineering and Ontology engineering are used for the development of the system. We also described tools and technologies to be used in building the system. The prototype of a small scale system has been built as a proof of concept of this family of system, for the domain of "research" in Indonesian context. The aim of building this prototype are: (a) to provide an architectural description prototype of a knowledge repository where Indonesian Context research as a central domain (b) to comprehend a software engineering for software system family.

Building secure applications requires significant expertise. Secure platforms and security patterns have been proposed to alleviate this problem. However, correctly applying patterns to use platform features is still highly expertise-dependent. Patterns are informal and there is a gap between them and platform features. We propose the concept of reusable verified design fragments, which package security patterns and platform features and are verified to provide assurance about their security properties. Design fragments can be composed through four primitive tactics. The verification of the composed design against desired security properties is presented in an assurance case. We demonstrate our approach by securing a Continuous Deployment pipeline and show that the tactics are sufficient to compose design fragments into a secure system. Finally, we formally define composition tactics, which are intended to support the development of systems that are secure by construction.

Spreadsheets are heavily used in industry, becausethey are easily written and adjusted, using an intuitive visual interface. They often start out as simple tools; however, over time spreadsheets can become increasingly complex, up to the point where they become complicated and inflexible. In many ways, spreadsheet are similar to software: both concern the storage and manipulation of data and the presentation of results to the user. Because of this similarity, many methods and techniques from software engineering can be applied to spreadsheets. The role of SEMS, the International Workshop on software engineering Methods in Spreadsheets is to explore the possibilities of applying successful methods from software engineering to spreadsheets. Some, like testing and visualization, have been tried before and can be built upon. For methods that have not yet been tried on spreadsheets, SEMS will serve as a platform for early feedback. The SEMS program included an industrial keynote, "spreadsheet stories" (success or failure), short and long research papers,a good mix of industrial and academic researchers, as well as lively discussion and debate.

A tail-tolerant cloud API wrapper

System operations (such as deployment, upgrade, reconfiguration) for cloud applications are failure prone. These failures are because these operations are performed through cloud APIs provided by cloud providers and cloud APIs, in turn, are failure prone. In this paper, we explore the characteristics of cloud APIs using Amazon EC2 as a test bed and propose mechanisms for improving cloud API performance. Specifically, we mined the Amazon EC2 forum and observed that 45% of complaints referred to the timing failure of cloud APIs. We then conducted a series of experiments on the cloud API timing behavior and observed that cloud APIs have long tail characteristics. Finally, we propose a cloud API wrapper that implements mechanisms to avoid the long tail, and demonstrate that our wrapper largely removes the long tail compared with the unwrapped APIs. © 2015 IEEE.

Sporadic operations such as rolling upgrade or machine instance redeployment are prone to unpredictable failures in the cloud largely due to the inherent high variability nature of cloud. Previous dependability research has established several recovery methods for cloud failures. In this paper, we first propose eight recovery patterns for sporadic operations. We then present the filtering process which filters applicable recovery patterns for a given operational step. We also propose a methodology to evaluate the recovery actions generated for the applicable recovery patterns based on the metrics of Recovery Time, Recovery Cost and Recovery Impact. This quantitative evaluation will lead to selection of optimal recovery actions. We implement a recovery service and illustrate its applicability by recovering from errors occurring in Asgard rolling upgrade operation on cloud. The experimental results show that the recovery service enhances automated recovery from operational failures by selecting the optimal recovery actions.

Popular open-source software projects receive and review contributions from a diverse array of developers, many of whom have little to no prior involvement with the project. A recent survey reported that reviewers consider conformance to the project's code style to be one of the top priorities when evaluating code contributions on Github. We propose to quantitatively evaluate the existence and effects of this phenomenon. To this aim we use language models, which were shown to accurately capture stylistic aspects of code. We find that rejected change sets do contain code significantly less similar to the project than accepted ones, furthermore, the less similar change sets are more likely to be subject to thorough review. Armed with these results we further investigate whether new contributors learn to conform to the project style and find that experience is positively correlated with conformance to the project's code style.

MapReduce has become the standard model for supporting big data analytics. In particular, MapReduce job optimization has been widely considered to be crucial in the implementations of big data analytics. However, there is still a lack of guidelines especially for practitioners to understand how the MapReduce jobs can be optimized. This paper aims to systematic identify and taxonomically classify the existing work on job optimization. We conducted a mapping study on 47 selected papers that were published between 2004 and 2014. We classified and compared the selected papers based on a 5WH-based characterization framework. This study generates a knowledge base of current job optimization solutions and also identifies a set of research gaps and opportunities. This study concludes that job optimization is still in an early stage of maturity. More attentions need to be paid to the cross-data center, cluster or rack job optimization to improve communication efficiency.

The advancement of mobile cloud computing (MCC) has the potential to improve communication and information during disaster emergency operation. Many studies from different countries have addressed different approaches to implement mobile cloud technologies during disaster operation. However, there has been a lack of any consolidated evidence-based study to evaluate the MCC from the dual perspectives of disaster emergency situation and technology. In this paper, we provide an extensive study of mobile cloud computing research as a critical system or application based on the latest literature published from 2010 to 2015, and highlights the specific challenges in implementing mobile cloud computing in disaster emergency operation. A systematic literature review was conducted over 4 prominent journals of computer science engineering (IEEE, ACM, ProQuest, Inspec/Elsevier) and the findings were classified into four key challenges of MCC implementation during disaster emergency operation. We present a taxonomy based on the key challenges in this area, and discuss the different solutions taken to solve the challenges. We conclude the paper with a critical analysis of the challenges that have not been solved, and highlight directions for future work.

Disaster-based failures can seriously disrupt any communication network, making its services unavailable. Such disruptions may be caused by natural disasters, technology-related failures, or malicious attacks, and they are observably increasing in number, intensity and scale. When network services that are a part of critical infrastructure become unavailable, commercial and/or societal problems are inevitable. The issue of limiting the impact of disaster-based failures needs to be urgently addressed due to the lack of suitable mechanisms deployed in the current networks. The COST CA15127 (RECODIS) Action will fill this gap by developing appropriate solutions to provide cost-efficient resilient communications in the presence of disaster-based disruptions considering both existing and emerging communication network architectures. It will be driven by researchers from academia and industry in strong cooperation with governmental bodies. In this paper, we highlight the objectives of RECODIS, its structure, as well as planned outcomes.
