MapReduce has become the standard model for supporting big data analytics. In particular, MapReduce job optimization has been widely considered to be crucial in the implementations of big data analytics. However, there is still a lack of guidelines especially for practitioners to understand how the MapReduce jobs can be optimized. This paper aims to systematic identify and taxonomically classify the existing work on job optimization. We conducted a mapping study on 47 selected papers that were published between 2004 and 2014. We classified and compared the selected papers based on a 5WH-based characterization framework. This study generates a knowledge base of current job optimization solutions and also identifies a set of research gaps and opportunities. This study concludes that job optimization is still in an early stage of maturity. More attentions need to be paid to the cross-data center, cluster or rack job optimization to improve communication efficiency.

The advancement of mobile cloud computing (MCC) has the potential to improve communication and information during disaster emergency operation. Many studies from different countries have addressed different approaches to implement mobile cloud technologies during disaster operation. However, there has been a lack of any consolidated evidence-based study to evaluate the MCC from the dual perspectives of disaster emergency situation and technology. In this paper, we provide an extensive study of mobile cloud computing research as a critical system or application based on the latest literature published from 2010 to 2015, and highlights the specific challenges in implementing mobile cloud computing in disaster emergency operation. A systematic literature review was conducted over 4 prominent journals of computer science engineering (IEEE, ACM, ProQuest, Inspec/Elsevier) and the findings were classified into four key challenges of MCC implementation during disaster emergency operation. We present a taxonomy based on the key challenges in this area, and discuss the different solutions taken to solve the challenges. We conclude the paper with a critical analysis of the challenges that have not been solved, and highlight directions for future work.

Disaster-based failures can seriously disrupt any communication network, making its services unavailable. Such disruptions may be caused by natural disasters, technology-related failures, or malicious attacks, and they are observably increasing in number, intensity and scale. When network services that are a part of critical infrastructure become unavailable, commercial and/or societal problems are inevitable. The issue of limiting the impact of disaster-based failures needs to be urgently addressed due to the lack of suitable mechanisms deployed in the current networks. The COST CA15127 (RECODIS) Action will fill this gap by developing appropriate solutions to provide cost-efficient resilient communications in the presence of disaster-based disruptions considering both existing and emerging communication network architectures. It will be driven by researchers from academia and industry in strong cooperation with governmental bodies. In this paper, we highlight the objectives of RECODIS, its structure, as well as planned outcomes.

Media streaming services are responsible for the significant increase of Internet traffic. This fact generates the need for better computing resources management in order to maintain such services always available. Cloud computing offers an elastic infrastructure that provides computing resources on demand in order to maintain such services always available. Moreover, emerging network architectures, such as software Defined networks, provide mechanisms that simplify the implementation of advanced network functions. In this context, this paper proposes an elastic approach to manage a video streaming service. The solution includes an OpenFlow-based load balancer, and an elasticity management mechanism that increases or decreases the amount of active streaming servers, considering customer's demand. A prototype was developed using a private cloud infrastructure and experiments were performed to show the viability and effectiveness of our solution, in terms of load balancing and elasticity functionality.

Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) can be considered as a key technology for next-generation wireless networking. However, field trials and experiments prove that the performance of WMNs still below expectations. Therefore, several challenging research issues need to be determined. The routing protocol is one of the important factors to be improved to be robust, scalable, secured and efficient. This paper aims to design and implement a routing protocol that improves the scalability of the WMNs. The Directional Hierarchical AODV (DH-AODV) routing protocol is proposed taking advantage of the existing fields of the control packets in the AODV in order to reduce the load on the network's bandwidth and to quickly detect route breakage. The proposed protocol is designed, implemented and evaluated using Qualnet Simulator. The Ad-hoc on Demand Distance Vector (AODV) is selected as a benchmark. The simulation results indicate that this enhanced routing protocol can 47% reduce the end-to-end delay of data packets, improve the throughput by 11.2%, and decrease the packet loss rate 20% less than the standard AODV.

Self-adaptive systems are capable of dealing with uncertainty at runtime handling complex issues as resource variability, changing user needs, and system intrusions or faults. If the requirements depend on context, runtime uncertainty will affect the execution of these contextual requirements. This work presents SACRE, a proof-of-concept implementation of an existing approach, ACon, developed by researchers of the Univ. of Victoria (Canada) in collaboration with the UPC (Spain). ACon uses a feedback loop to detect contextual requirements affected by uncertainty and data mining techniques to determine the best operationalization of contexts on top of sensed data. The implementation is placed in the domain of smart vehicles and the contextual requirements provide functionality for drowsy drivers.
