Conducting system operations (such as upgrade, reconfiguration, deployment) for large-scale systems in cloud is error prone and complex. These operations rely heavily on unreliable cloud infrastructure APIs to complete. The inherent uncertainties and inevitable errors cause a long-tail in the completion time distribution of operations. In this paper, we propose mechanisms and deployment architecture tactics to tolerate the long-tail. We wrapped cloud provisioning API calls and implemented deployment tactics at the architecture level for system operations. Our initial evaluation shows that the mechanisms and deployment tactics can effectively reduce the long tail. © 2014 USENIX Association. All rights reserved.

Over the past years, frameworks such as MapReduce and Spark have been introduced to ease the task of developing big data programs and applications. However, the jobs in these frameworks are roughly defined and packaged as executable jars without any functionality being exposed or described. This means that deployed jobs are not natively composable and reusable for subsequent development. Besides, it also hampers the ability for applying optimizations on the data flow of job sequences and pipelines. In this paper, we present the Hierarchically Distributed Data Matrix (HDM) which is a functional, strongly-typed data representation for writing composable big data applications. Along with HDM, a runtime framework is provided to support the execution of HDM applications on distributed infrastructures. Based on the functional data dependency graph of HDM, multiple optimizations are applied to improve the performance of executing HDM jobs. The experimental results show that our optimizations can achieve improvements of between 10% to 60% of the Job-Completion-Time for different types of operation sequences when compared with the current state of art, Apache Spark.

Using semantic technologies the materialization of implicit given facts that can be derived from a dataset is an important task performed by a reasoner. With respect to the answering time for queries and the growing amount of available data, scaleable solutions that are able to process large datasets are needed. In previous work we described a rule-based reasoner implementation that uses massively parallel hardware to derive new facts based on a given set of rules. This implementation was limited by the size of processable input data as well as on the number of used parallel hardware devices. In this paper we introduce further concepts for a workload partitioning and distribution to overcome this limitations. Based on the introduced concepts, additional levels of parallelization can be proposed that benefit from the use of multiple parallel devices. Furthermore, we introduce a concept to reduce the amount of invalid triple derivations like duplicates. We evaluate our concepts by applying different rulesets to the real-world DBPedia dataset as well as to the synthetic Lehigh University benchmark ontology (LUBM) with up to 1.1 billion triples. The evaluation shows that our implementation scales in a linear way and outperforms current state of the art reasoner with respect to the throughput achieved on a single computing node. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Mutation analysis is a testing strategy that consists of using supporting tools to seed artificial faults in the original code of a software under test, generating faulty programs (“mutants”) that are supposed to produce incorrect outputs. Novice programmers suffer of a wide range of deficits due to defective training processes. We argue that the incorporation of experiences on mutation testing in programming courses adds valuable knowledge to the learning process. In this paper we evaluate the effects of using mutation testing to improve the learning process of students in programming courses. We present results of experiments and analysis involving undergraduate students. These experiments are the continuation of a previous work in which we raise empirical evidences that the adequate incorporation of mutation testing in programming courses contributes to form an effective environment that fosters learning. To do so, we provide a mutation testing tool to promote the practice of mutation testing by novice programmers. Through practical experiences and several analysis survey we measured the effects of using the mutation testing criterion to teach programming. In addition, we collected the opinion of senior students who already knew mutation testing concepts about their opinion on the usage of mutation concepts to teach novice programmers. Our findings reveal that the effective use of mutation analysis concepts contributes to the learning process, making students see the code as a product under development that is the result of a careful manual coding process which they need for measuring and predicting the effect of each command. The main contributions discussed in this paper are: (1) presenting results of an empirical analysis involving undergraduate students, thus giving us preliminary evidence on the effects of the novel practice; (2) exposing possible practices to explore mutation testing in programming classes, highlighting the limitations and strengths of such

software Defined networks (SDN) are becoming a trending technology in modern Internet. This technology helps to solve a significant number of well-known engineering problems in a effective and elegant way as they provide software-defined centralized network control. An SDN controller can be extended with application that effectively serve for concrete purposes and provide flexible management of network flows. This opens a great number of opportunities for a lot of network security problems such as maintaining of privileges in a proper way, splitting control and data planes, and attacks detection and mitigation. In this work we consider the opportunities of SDN for a 'survival' mitigation during DDoS attacks, the load balancing problem. We propose two-level balancing solution in SDN networks, which includes traditional balancing between servers and load balancing between network devices as well. Experiments show that our solution increase 'survival' time of a system during DDoS attack in times compared to existing balancing solution in SDN networks. © 2014 IEEE.

Consumer-initiated sporadic operations on cloud applications, such as deployment, upgrade and reconfiguration, may fail because of the inherent uncertainty of operating in a cloud environment. For example, if a VM is not able to start, operations dependent on that VM will fail. In this paper we propose an approach for analyzing sporadic operations on cloud applications to facilitate recovery. We do this by first creating a process model of the sporadic cloud operation. The Process may not be suitable for recovery operations or the application's deployment architecture since an individual step may be at the wrong level of granularity or a failure may unnecessarily affect multiple steps. We then propose a set of process division criteria for revising an operation process to support recovery. This set of criteria contains four aspects: 1) Atomicity to support the imposition of transactions on portions of the process, 2) Idempotence to allow for re-execution of a failed portion, 3) Granularity to allow reuse of existing steps, 4) Recovery Actions Identifiable to allow proper recovery actions to be taken to recover from the errors occurring during the operation. We demonstrate the feasibility of imposing these criteria by using the rolling upgrade operation in Asgard - a popular cloud management tool for AWS EC2. © 2014 IEEE.

Scientific software is becoming more complex and its development nowadays is often an interdisciplinary process in which usually scientists - most of them without training in software engineering - implement the software themselves. To help them achieve a good code quality, we propose to employ a process called Sprat based on the concept of hierarchies of domain-specific languages (DSLs). In such a hierarchy, every DSL constitutes an implementation platform for the DSL directly above it. Each role in the development process (i.e., a scientist from a specific discipline) implements a layer of the software in a DSL belonging to the hierarchy. Therefore, the scientists only deal with abstractions they are familiar with from their respective domain and a clear separation of components is attained. To evaluate the Sprat approach, we present its application to the development of the Sprat simulation - A marine ecosystem model for long-term fish stock prediction.

Conventional Brillouin based carrier generator may produce optical wavelengths at the spacing of 10 GHz (odd) or 20 GHz (even), which in turn will be heterodyned for microwave/millimeter wave (mm-wave) generation. Therefore, in the scenario where both odd and even order carriers are required, two laser units have to be utilized. In this paper, a new type of Brillouin fiber laser is proposed with bidirectional pumping by using two seed lasers. This technique enables single laser unit to generate both odd and even order wavelengths that results in the possibility of varying the resolution of the laser. The laser resolution can be changed by switching the seed laser 2 OFF for even order carrier generation, while the odd order carrier generation can be performed by operating the seed laser 2 at the same wavelength as seed laser 1. A ~30 GHz carrier generation was performed in the proposed laser unit by switching to odd order generation. Meanwhile, a 40 GHz carrier was generated by both odd and even order options of the laser, where the odd order exhibits a power level of -7 dBm with many residual components, while the even order generated high purity carrier with a power level of 8 dBm, resulting in an improvement 15 dB.

This paper investigates the possibility of creating an energy profile of a RISC processor instruction set in the prototyping phase, using FPGA implementation and physical measurements. In order to determine the power consumption at instruction-level, several programs have been developed and run on the processor implementation on FPGA. The experiments have focused at the following groups of instructions: arithmetic and logic (ALU) instructions, memory access instructions, control instructions, compare and move instructions. The main goal of our work is the investigation of the correlation between dynamic power consumption of a RISC processor design implemented in different technologies (FPGA vs. ASIC) and manufacturing processes, called power technology gap. The achieved correlation coefficient between the FPGA 45nm physical power measurements and ASIC 45nm power estimation is 86.39%.
