software Defined networks (SDN) are becoming a trending technology in modern Internet. This technology helps to solve a significant number of well-known engineering problems in a effective and elegant way as they provide software-defined centralized network control. An SDN controller can be extended with application that effectively serve for concrete purposes and provide flexible management of network flows. This opens a great number of opportunities for a lot of network security problems such as maintaining of privileges in a proper way, splitting control and data planes, and attacks detection and mitigation. In this work we consider the opportunities of SDN for a “survival” mitigation during DDoS attacks, the load balancing problem. We propose two-level balancing solution in SDN networks, which includes traditional balancing between servers and load balancing between network devices as well. Experiments show that our solution increase “survival” time of a system during DDoS attack in times compared to existing balancing solution in SDN networks.

When cloud consumers perform rolling upgrade operations on cloud applications, they may encounter failures due to cloud uncertainty, interfering operations and incorrect configurations. For example, unreliable cloud API calls can make the rolling upgrade operation fail in unpredictable ways due to a long time delay to respond to the API call. This paper proposes two recovery strategies for recovering from rolling upgrade failures. The strategies are Compensated Undo & Redo and Reparation. We evaluated our recovery strategies on Asgard-based rolling upgrade operation on Amazon Cloud based on two evaluation metrics: MTTR and Service Performance. The experiment results show that our strategies perform better than the recovery mechanisms provided by Asgard itself. We also conduct a comparison between the two recovery strategies based on the metrics.

Recovering from failures of sporadic operations such as rolling upgrade or migration is complicated by the fact that the application being upgraded or migrated must continue to provide service. This means that recovery strategies for sporadic operations must include facilities for recovering from normal operations as well. As a step in deriving methods for recovering from failures in sporadic operations, we classify existing methods into four categories according to their purposes and the life cycle phase for which they are applicable. Not only does this taxonomy facilitate the research on recoverability of cloud sporadic operations but also it can help better understand the existing cloud recovery strategies.

The complexity of today's Internet environment means new law enforcement requirements are likely to introduce unanticipated security flaws. Political and law enforcement leaders in the U.S. and the U.K. have called for Internet systems to be redesigned to ensure government access to information even encrypted information. There are three general problems. First, providing exceptional access to communications would force a U-turn from the best practices now being deployed to make the Internet more secure. These practices include forward secrecy, where decryption keys are deleted immediately after use, so that stealing the encryption key used by a communications server would not compromise earlier or later communications. Second, building in exceptional access would substantially increase system complexity. Third, exceptional access would create concentrated targets that could attract bad actors. Moreover, law enforcement's stated need for rapid access to data would make it impractical to store keys offline or split keys among multiple key holders, as security engineers would normally do with extremely high-value credentials.

The fuzzy logic theory has been proven to be effective in dealing with various nonlinear systems and has a great success in industry applications. Among different kinds of models for fuzzy systems, the so-called Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model has been quite popular due to its convenient and simple dynamic structure as well as its capability of approximating any smooth nonlinear function to any specified accuracy within any compact set. In terms of such a model, the performance analysis and the design of controllers and filters play important roles in the research of fuzzy systems. In this paper, we aim to survey some recent advances on the T-S fuzzy control and filtering problems with various network-induced phenomena. The network-induced phenomena under consideration mainly include communication delays, packet dropouts, signal quantization, and randomly occurring uncertainties (ROUs). With such network-induced phenomena, the developments on T-S fuzzy control and filtering issues are reviewed in detail. In addition, some latest results on this topic are highlighted. In the end, conclusions are drawn and some possible future research directions are pointed out. © 2015 Sunjie Zhang et al.

Context: The Unified Modeling Language (UML), with its 14 different diagram types, is the de-facto standard modeling language for object-oriented modeling and documentation. Since the various UML diagrams describe different aspects of one, and only one, software under development, they are not independent but strongly depend on each other in many ways. In other words, the UML diagrams describing a software product must be consistent. Inconsistencies between these diagrams may be a source of faults in software systems. It is therefore paramount that these inconsistencies be detected, analyzed and hopefully fixed. Objective: The aim of this article is to deliver a comprehensive summary of UML consistency rules as they are described in the literature to date to obtain an extensive and detailed overview of the current research in this area. Method: We performed a Systematic Mapping Study by following well-known guidelines. We selected 95 primary studies from a search with seven search engines performed in December 2012. Results: Different results are worth mentioning. First it appears that researchers tend to discuss very similar consistency rules, over and over again. Most rules are horizontal (98.10%) and syntactic (88.21%). The most used diagrams are the class diagram (71.58%), the sequence diagram (47.37%) and the state machine diagram (42.11%). Conclusion: The fact that many rules are duplicated in primary studies confirms the need for a well-accepted list of consistency rules. This paper is a first step in this direction. Results indicate that much more work is needed to develop consistency rules for all 14 UML diagrams, in all dimensions of consistency (e.g., semantic and syntactic on the one hand, horizontal, vertical and evolution on the other hand). The main aim of my doctoral research is to create a comprehensive set of well-accepted consistency rules for UML diagrams that can be found in the literature, in reference textbooks or in the UML standard. Moreover, an important part of that aim will be the validation of the gathered UML consistency rules. This research will provide to the academic community and industrial organizations an extensive and detailed new base of knowledge about UML consistency rules which is a paramount topic in UML context. Therefore it will represent a sound starting point for all the researchers and designers involved in UML consistency. Copyright 2014 ACM.

Security bugs are critical programming errors that can lead to serious vulnerabilities in software. Examining their behaviour and characteristics within a software ecosystem can provide the research community with data regarding their evolution, persistence and others. We present a dataset that we produced by applying static analysis to the Maven Central Repository (approximately 265GB of data) in order to detect potential security bugs. For our analysis we used FindBugs, a tool that examines Java bytecode to detect numerous types of bugs. The dataset contains the metrics' results that FindBugs reports for every project version (a JAR) included in the ecosystem. For every version in our data repository, we also store specific metadata, such as the JAR's size, its dependencies and others. Our dataset can be used to produce interesting research results involving security bugs, as we show in specific examples.

The use of commercial off-the-shelf components for implementing Internet of Things devices has become a common practice amongst researchers and solution providers. IOT solutions, based on the Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone and BeagleBone Black, offer cost effective, versatile and uncomplicated platforms for rapid application development. The devices are treated as black box devices and little work has been done to quantify the performance of these devices when the system architecture, software components or communication channels are varied. This paper introduces micro- and macro-benchmarking methods for these devices; quantifying the performance of each device for the varying hardware architectures. Micro-benchmarking was performed using lmbench - a cross platform benchmarking framework for UNIX devices. The macro-benchmarking was implemented using a custom developed CoAP benchmarking utility created using the libCoAP library. The results showed that the selection of the platform processor is a key design requirement and has the most potential to optimise CoAP server performance. The latency associated with the communication channels was found to be a dominating factor for round-trip times associated with CoAP requests.
