The authors of this paper explore the use of IPv6 over Low power Wireless Personal Area networks (6LoWPAN), IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low power and Lossy networks (RPL) and Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) as a possible solution for realising the Internet of Things (IOT) vision in Industrial Wireless Sensor networks (IWSNs), The aim of this paper is to investigate the feasibility of using Internet engineering Task Force (IETF) standards in industrial environments by identifying and quantifying several attributes of a 6LoWPAN, RPL and CoAP based IWSNs relating to bounded time interval communications. The paper identifies several possible causes of latency in IWSNs and can be used as a basis for deploying Internet Protocol (IP) based IWSNs requiring IOT connectivity.

Wi-Fi based fingerprinting systems, mostly utilize the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI), which is known to be unreliable due to environmental and hardware effects. In this paper, we present a novel Wi-Fi fingerprinting system, exploiting the fine-grained information known as Channel State Information (CSI). The frequency diversity of CSI can be effectively utilized to represent a location in both frequency and spatial domain resulting in more accurate indoor localization. We propose a novel location signature CSI-MIMO that incorporates Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) information and use both the magnitude and the phase of CSI of each sub-carrier. We experimentally evaluate the performance of CSI-MIMO fingerprinting using the k-nearest neighbor and the Bayes algorithm. The accuracy of the proposed CSI-MIMO is compared with Finegrained Indoor Fingerprinting System (FIFS) and a simple CSI-based system. The experimental result shows an accuracy improvement of 57% over FIFS with an accuracy of 0.95 meters.

Sensors of all kinds are being integrated with mobile and portable devices (tablets, smartphones). This opens up the possibility of context-aware applications to effectively be able to adapt their behavior, user interfaces and content according to the current user's situation. Frequently, context-aware applications require an infrastructure for acquisition, aggregation and reasoning of contextual information. However, existing context management infrastructures are not always appropriated to the heterogeneous and particular environment of mobile devices. In this paper, we present a context management middleware called LoCCAM (Loosely Coupled Context Acquisition Middeware) to provide self-adaptive acquisition of contextual information. It can execute both locally, on a single device, or distributed among nearby devices. The middleware proposes a model for publication, and notification of contextual information based on tuple spaces. As consequence, it offers a lower coupling among applications and the context acquisition layer. In this paper, we also present a performance evaluation of the adaptation mechanism. Data Center TCP (DCTCP) is an Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN)-based congestion control and Active Queue Management (AQM) scheme. It has provoked widespread interest because it keeps queuing delay and delay variance very low. There is no theoretical reason why Data Center TCP (DCTCP) cannot scale to the size of the Internet, resulting in greater absolute reductions in delay than achieved in data centres. However, no way has yet been found for DCTCP traffic to coexist with conventional TCP without being starved. This paper introduces a way to deploy DCTCP incrementally on the public Internet that could solve this coexistence problem. Using the widely deployed Weighted Random Early Detection (WRED) scheme, we configure a second AQM that is applied solely to ECN-capable packets. We focus solely on long-running flows, not because they are realistic, but as the critical gating test for whether starvation can occur. For the non-ECN traffic we use TCP New Reno; again not to seek realism, but to check for safety against the prevalent reference. We report the promising result that, not only does the proposed AQM always avoid starvation, but it can also achieve equal rates. We even derived how the sharing ratio between DCTCP and conventional TCP traffic depends on the various AQM parameters. The next step beyond this gating test will be to quantify the reduction in queuing delay and variance in dynamic scenarios. This will support the standardization process needed to define new ECN semantics for DCTCP deployment that the authors have started at the IETF.

Recent years have witnessed the emergence of the Shared Sensor and Actuator networks (SSANs), which instead of assuming an application-specific design, allow the sensing and communication infrastructure to be shared among multiple applications. With an increasing number of sharing applications, a growing amount of sensor-generated data will be produced, from which useful information can be extracted. However, wireless sensors and actuators commonly rely on batteries as their energy sources, whose replacement is undesirable or unfeasible. Therefore, in order to reduce the amount of data to be transmitted in the wireless channel, thus saving energy, Multisensor Data Fusion Methods (MDF) can be employed. MDF can also enhance data accuracy in the SSAN scenario and make inferences that are not feasible from a single sensor or data source. Existing MDFs are currently utilized following an application-specific design for the network. We present an adaptation of well-known MDFs to deal with multiple applications simultaneously in the SSANs context. Our proposal is validated through simulations and tests on real nodes in the domain of smart grid applications.

The main objective of this paper is to study and analyze the power supply stage of a series-series (SS) fixed-frequency inductive power transfer (IPT) system, in order to suggest effective soft switching techniques to improve its performance. Because of the characteristics of the system, zero voltage switching (ZVS) operation was used and three control strategies were compared: phase-shift (PS) control, asymmetrical duty cycle (ADC) control and optimal asymmetrical voltage cancellation (o_AVC) control. The o_AVC control is found to be more efficient for this application. Additionally, this paper presents an inductive power transfer transformer (IPTT) prototype that was built in the laboratory, which helped validate the theoretical analysis and simulation results with practical tests. The plots and circuit simulations were obtained from MATLAB and SIMULINK respectively.

Challenges in flexible safety-critical software development - An industrial qualitative survey

Context. Development of safety-critical systems is mostly governed by process-heavy paradigms, while increasing demands on flexibility and agility also reach this domain. Objectives. We wanted to explore in more detail the industrial needs and challenges when facing this trend. Method. We launched a qualitative survey, interviewing engineers from four companies in four different industry domains. Results. The survey identifies human factors (skills, experience, and attitudes) being key in safety-critical systems development, as well as good documentation. Certification cost is related to change frequency, which is limiting flexibility. Component reuse and iterative processes were found to increase adaptability to changing customer needs. Conclusions. We conclude that agile development and flexibility may co-exist with safety-critical software development, although there are specific challenges to address. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Current over-provisioned and multi-tier data centre networks (DCN) deploy rigid control and management platforms, which are not able to accommodate the ever-growing workload driven by the increasing demand of high-performance data centre (DC) and cloud applications. In response to this, the EC FP7 project LIGHTNESS (Low Latency and High Throughput Dynamic Network Infrastructures for High Performance Datacentre Interconnects) is proposing a new flattened optical DCN architecture capable of providing dynamic, programmable, and highly available DCN connectivity services while meeting the requirements of new and emerging DC and cloud applications. LIGHTNESS DCN comprises all-optical switching technologies (Optical Packet Switching (OPS) and Optical Circuit Switching (OCS)) and hybrid Top-of-the-Rack (ToR) switches, controlled and operated by a software Defined Networking (SDN) based control plane for enhanced programmability of heterogeneous network functions and protocols. Harnessing the power of optics enables DCs to effectively cope with the high-performance applications' demands. The programmability and flexibility provided by the SDN based control plane allow to fully exploit the benefits of the LIGHTNESS multi-technology optical DCN, while provisioning on-demand, dynamic, flexible and highly resilient network services inside DCs. © 2014 IEEE.

Context: Proponents of the Scrum software development method use the term 'Scrum But' to refer to harmful changes to Scrum. Scrum has been increasingly adopted in large software development organizations. This has led to changes to Scrum practices, but it is not known if these changes are harmful. Objective: We studied how the requirements were planned and managed in the development teams of a large Scrum organization, how well the requirements planning and management practices matched Scrum, and whether the changes were perceived harmful. Method: We quantitatively analysed 435 requirements spanning a time period of approximately one year. We conducted a total of 40 interviews to study the Scrum adoption in the organization and to explain and validate the quantitative results. Results: The main discrepancies between the organization's practices and Scrum were the pacing of the planning process, which was more akin to a continuous process instead of the iteration-paced Scrum model, and the average time it took to develop requirements, which was considerably longer than the time prescribed by Scrum. The latter discrepancy was considered slightly harmful. Conclusion: Changes to the Scrum practices should be evaluated in their context to separate harmful ones from necessary or beneficial changes mandated by the organizational context. © 2013 IEEE.

Traditional music education places a large emphasis on individual practice. Studies have shown that individual practice is frequently not very productive due to limited feedback and students lacking interest and motivation. In this paper we explore the use of augmented reality to create an immersive experience to improve the efficiency of learning of beginner piano students. The objective is to stimulate development in notation literacy and to create motivation through presenting as a game the task that was perceived as a chore. This is done by identifying successful concepts from existing systems and merging them into a new system designed to be used with a head mounted display. The student is able to visually monitor their practice and have fun while doing so. An informal user study indicates that the system initially puts some pressure on users, but that participants find it helpful and believe that it improves learning. © 2013, Australian computer Society, Inc.
