Context: Proponents of the Scrum software development method use the term "Scrum But" to refer to harmful changes to Scrum. Scrum has been increasingly adopted in large software development organizations. This has led to changes to Scrum practices, but it is not known if these changes are harmful. Objective: We studied how the requirements were planned and managed in the development teams of a large Scrum organization, how well the requirements planning and management practices matched Scrum, and whether the changes were perceived harmful. Method: We quantitatively analysed 435 requirements spanning a time period of approximately one year. We conducted a total of 40 interviews to study the Scrum adoption in the organization and to explain and validate the quantitative results. Results: The main discrepancies between the organization's practices and Scrum were the pacing of the planning process, which was more akin to a continuous process instead of the iteration-paced Scrum model, and the average time it took to develop requirements, which was considerably longer than the time prescribed by Scrum. The latter discrepancy was considered slightly harmful. Conclusion: Changes to the Scrum practices should be evaluated in their context to separate harmful ones from necessary or beneficial changes mandated by the organizational context.

A considerable part of software design is dedicated for the composition of two or more modules. The implication is that changes made later in the implementation often require some reasoning about module composition properties. However, these properties are often not explicitly specified in design artefacts. Moreover, they cannot be easily inferred from the source code either. As a result, implicit composition properties may represent a major source of software maintenance complexity. This fact is particularly true with the advent of post object-oriented techniques, which are increasingly providing advanced mechanisms to enable flexible module composition. However, there is little empirical knowledge on how design models with explicitly-specified composition properties can improve software maintenance tasks. This paper reports an experiment that analyses the impact of design models enriched with composition properties on system maintenance. Explicit composition modelling was achieved in the experiment through a conservative approach, i.e., a specific set of additional UML stereotypes dedicated to model composition properties. The experiment involved 28 participants, who were asked to realize four maintenance tasks using UML design models with different levels of module composition details. Our findings suggested that explicit composition modelling contributed to better results in the realization of program change tasks, regardless of the developers' expertise. Users of composition-enhanced models consistently yielded better results when compared to users of plain UML models. The use of explicit composition specification also led to an average increase of 44.7% in the quality of changes produced by the participants. Copyright © 2013 ACM.

The term "Technical Debt" was coined over 20 years ago by Ward Cunningham in a 1992 OOPSLA experience report. Ward used "Technical debt" to describe the trade-offs between delivering the most appropriate - Albeit likely immature - product, in the shortest time possible. Since then, the repercussions of "technical debt" have become more visible, though not necessarily more widely understood. Cloud consumers have a variety of deployment related techniques, such as auto-scaling policies and recovery strategies, for dealing with the uncertainties in the cloud. Uncertainties can be characterized as stochastic (such as failures, disasters, and workload spikes) and subjective (such as choice among various deployment options). Cloud consumers must consider both stochastic and subjective uncertainties. Analytic support for consumers in selecting appropriate techniques and setting the required parameters in the face of different types of uncertainty is currently limited. In this paper, we propose a set of application availability analysis models that capture subjective uncertainties in addition to stochastic uncertainties. We built and validated the models by using industry best practices on deployment, and actual commercial products for disaster recovery and live migration. Our results show that the models permit more informed and quantitative availability analysis than industry best practices under a wide range of scenarios.

This paper presents the work undertaken so far in the formulation of a Strategic research Agenda (SRA) for research in Systems of Systems engineering in the EU. The T-AREA-SoS project is introduced to provide a context, together with a section on Drivers for Change which the SRA needs to take into account. The strategy and process for the generation of the SRA is described, followed by details of outputs to date and the potential benefits it is believed would accrue from the implementation of the SRA. © 2013 IEEE.

Awareness of emotion status of people is fairly important for aged ones, the ones with sub-health status, and various patients in order to keep them in good mood. The emotion recognition at run time is intrinsically challenging due to its complexity nature. On the one hand, the awareness of human emotion should be achieved as non-intrusive as possible. On the other hand, the android smart phones on the market are increasingly popular which are equipped with various sensors that can be used to achieve the awareness of emotion status. In this paper, we propose an approach based on the heart beat rate and contents of user's talk, which are obtained from built-in camera and microphone on smart phones. We first classify anger, joy, normal, and sadness based on heart rates, then the emotion recognition is further improved by emotional key words in a talk. We have evaluated this approach in terms of recognition accuracy and power consumption found that the accuracy can achieve 84.7%.

Pervasive computing is converging with cloud computing as with the development of smart cities. There arise the complexities from this convergence, like unprecedented large number of computing devices, flexibilities and adaptation of services for fitting personalization requirements from end users, expectations of powerful computing and storage capabilities of handhold devices, and so on. Therefore, a supporting infrastructure that can handle big data arisen from large number of devices, and can flexibly switch services at run time, is needed. Henceforth, in this paper, we propose an OSGi based pervasive cloud (OSGi-PC) infrastructure which can make use both of the cloud computing capabilities and component flexibilities from OSGi. We have evaluated the OSGi-PC in terms of performance and power consumption to show its usability.

Comparing process models and matching similar activities has recently emerged as a research area of business process management. However, the problem is fundamentally hard when considering realistic scenarios: e.g., there is a huge variety of terms and various options for the grammatical structure of activity labels exist. While prior research has established important conceptual foundations, recall values have been fairly low (around 0.26) - arguably too low to be useful in practice. In this paper, we present techniques for activity label matching which improve current results (recall of 0.44, without sacrificing precision). Furthermore, we identify categories of matching challenges to guide future research. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.
