Systems of Systems engineering constitutes a major challenge for the 21st Century and research into this topic has become an imperative. The Support Action, T-AREA-SoS has been initiated by the European Commission to develop a research agenda in Systems of Systems (SoS) that will inform future investment in this area. Through an extensive consultation and review, a number of SoS capability gaps have been identified. Through structuring and subsequent consultation, these have been developed into twelve research themes the detailed areas of which are mapped to the three SoS characteristics of control, evolution, and emergent behaviour. A framework is presented through which researchers can develop a research campaign in SoS.

The use of online social networks (OSN) has been a reality for some years now. If OSN users have mobile devices and they are taken into account, every day a vast amount of information is spontaneously generated, creating opportunities for researchers and developers to use, for example, artificial intelligent techniques to explore similarities between friends, to recommend content and to come up with business opportunities. Additionally, OSN and mobile devices can be put together to explore user context to tailor services according to the user environment. However, to apply ubiquitous computing and artificial intelligence to OSN can be cumbersome and resource-consuming. Thus, this paper presents a framework to develop intelligent applications on top of existing OSN, helping developers to explore similarities between the users and recommend content, using user context and simple information present on OSN, without compromising resources present in mobile devices. At the end, this paper shows how to develop new applications using the framework exploring user context and semantic concepts defined by the developer. © 2012 ACM.

Securely isolating malicious OS kernel modules using hardware virtualization support

Kernel-level attacks or rootkits that compromise the security of an operating system are one of the most important concerns in system security at present. By enforcing data-flow integrity or control-flow integrity of an operating system, a variety of solutions have been proposed to defend against these attacks. However, the added overhead likely makes those approaches unsuitable for many real-world applications. In this paper, we present SecEye, a lightweight hypervisor for protecting kernel integrity via securely isolating malicious dynamically loadable kernel modules, using hardware virtualization support. A primitive prototype is then implemented on Linux as a kernel module, which can detect kernel-level rootkits or attacks as well as avoid being tampered by malicious code. Experiment results show the effectiveness and feasibility of SecEye and tolerable overhead imposed. © 2013 by Binary Information Press.

The context-awareness is a central aspect in the design of pervasive systems, characterizing their ability to adapt its structure and behavior. The context-aware exception handling (CAEH) is an existing approach employed to design exception handling in pervasive systems. In this approach, the context is used to define, detect, propagate, and handle exceptions. CAEH is a complex and error prone activity, needing designers' insights and domain expertise to identify and characterize contextual exceptions. However, despite the existence of formal methods to analyze the adaptive behavior of pervasive systems, such methods lack specific support to specify the CAEH behavior. In this paper, we propose a formal model to reason about the CAEH behavior. It comprises an extension of the Kripke Structure to model the context evolution of a pervasive system and a transformation function that derivates the CAEH control flow from that proposed structure. © 2012 IEEE.

The growth of the Internet, Web technologies, and other electronic tools are allowing the public to become more informed and actively engaged in their health care than was possible in the past. Personal Health Records (PHR) offer users possibility of managing their own health data. Many patients are using PHRs to communicate with doctors in order to improve healthcare quality and efficiency. A large number of companies have emerged to provide consumers with the opportunity to use online PHRs within a healthcare platform, proposing different functionalities and services. This paper analyzes and assesses the functionalities and internationalization (i18n) of free Web based PHRs. © 2012 IEEE.

In recent decades the globalization has caused a huge in- crease of ship movements carrying goods and passengers between countries. It makes quite difficult to detect manually critical or relevant situations that may occur in marine traffic. In this paper, we propose an event-driven service- oriented-architecture that combines the complex event processing and data distribution system, building a high performance and available system for analyzing and correlating data provided by ship's automatic identification systems in real time. This architecture will be able to detect automatically, and as soon as possible, abnormal situations occurred in seas all over the world. For this, a set of complex event patterns for detecting AIS hijacking or failure, as well as ship engine malfunction or ship collision is proposed and defined in this work. Copyright 2012 ACM.

The large-scale Systems of Systems (SoS) are there to improve the provision of societal services. These are driven by global drivers such as population growth, aging, food security, energy security and climate change. However, a considerable number of SoS projects resulted in failures, causing detrimental economic impact. This paper presents a set of preliminary results from an European Commission (EC) funded project called T-AREA-SoS (Trans-Atlantic research and Education Agenda on Systems of Systems). The primary purpose of T-AREA-SoS is to provide input to EC's €80 billion Horizon 2020 research programme in formulating a Strategic research Agenda for Systems of Systems engineering (SoSE) that spans American and European activities. An initial set of prioritised SoSE research elements derived from an online survey are discussed from an economic and societal stance using examples from heterogeneous sectors such as transport, energy and manufacturing.

Despite all efforts to support processes through IT, processes based on paper forms are still prevalent. In this paper, we propose a costeffective and non-technical approach to automate form-based processes. The approach builds on several types of annotations: to help collect and distribute information for form fields;to choose appropriate process execution paths;and to support email distribution or approval for filled forms. We implemented the approach in a prototype, called EzyForms. We conducted a user study with 15 participants, showing that people with little technical background were able to automate the existing formbased processes efficiently. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.

Multi Radio Multi Channel Wireless Mesh networks (MRMC-WMNs) are undergoing rapid progress and inspiring numerous deployments. These networks require carefully assignment of resources and load balancing to provide the quality guarantees to traffic flows. Load balancing avoids the creation of bottlenecks and increases the network efficiency. Certainly, we need a benchmark to compare the performance of different load balancing mechanisms. In this paper, we consider the scenario of bandwidth-guaranteed broadcast sessions, where each session has a specific bandwidth requirement. The aim of this research is to analyze the performance of broadcasting in small-scale MRMC-WMNs. By considering Wireless Broadcast Advantage (WBA), we formulate channel and node constraints and propose Traffic engineering Efficiency to evaluate the load balancing ability of algorithms. Deriving analytical relationships between throughput, number of transmissions, node and channel utilization is other contribution of this paper. In order to confirm the accuracy of derived analysis, we present some simulations on typical networks. © 2012 GIRI.

Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) is an approved standard protocol that provides a tree forwarding topology in Ethernet networks. Tree topology ensures a unique path from any node to every other node in the network. One of the main disadvantages of STP is its poor load balancing capabilities that results in uneven load distribution and bottlenecks. In our previous work, we have suggested Shortcut Switching Strategy (SSS) to overcome this problem. SSS improves load balancing by using some blocked links to forward traffic. In this paper, we propose a novel forwarding strategy named Enhanced Forwarding Strategy (EFS) that enhances the performance of SSS. Simulation results show that this new strategy decreases the traffic load on links and switches and has a good load balancing performance. © 2012 GIRI.
