Efficient scheduling is a key concern for the effectual execution of performance driven Grid applications, such as workflows. Many list heuristics have been developed for scheduling workflows in centralized Grid environment. However, in this paper, we present a distributed list heuristic for decentralized scheduling of workflow applications in global Grids. The simulation results show that the proposed scheduling approach is scalable with respect to increased workload on the system. © 2009 IEEE.

Interval temporal logics are based on interval structures over linearly (or partially) ordered domains, where time intervals, rather than time instants, are the primitive ontological entities. In this paper we introduce and study Right Propositional Neighborhood Logic over natural numbers with integer constraints for interval lengths, which is a propositional interval temporal logic featuring a modality for the `right neighborhood' relation between intervals and explicit integer constraints for interval lengths. We prove that it has the bounded model property with respect to ultimately periodic models and is therefore decidable. In addition, we provide an EXPSPACE procedure for satisfiability checking and we prove EXPSPACE-hardness by a reduction from the exponential corridor tiling problem.

In this paper we propose a technique to determine the decision thresholds in multi-bit distributed detection. Detection thresholds are required to quantize the acquired information from the environment to send them to a fusion center. In multi-bit detection, decision making is complicated and in most cases, methods based on simulation or Person by Person Optimizations are applied to find the thresholds. In such methods, the thresholds are usually determined by estimating environmental conditions and conducting the necessary simulations and carrying out complex computations. In our proposed method we have adopted a simple analytical technique in place of these complicated methods with a detection performance close to the optimal. Compared with the detection performance of optimized solutions, the difference is slight while the simplicity and the speed of computations in our method allows the possibility of using it in a sensor network after it has deployed in the environment and the actual conditions have been determined.

Current Ethernet networks rely on IEEE Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), which provides a loop-free connectivity across various network nodes. STP does this task by reducing the topology of a switched network to a tree topology where redundant links are pruned. In STP, all customers need to use the same spanning tree and there isn't any traffic engineering mechanism for load balancing. Currently, one of the main approaches to address this issue is IEEE Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (MSTP), in which, a spanning tree instance is run separately for each Virtual LAN (or group of Virtual LANs). This standard does not provide any generic method to select the spanning trees and to map the VLANs to the spanning tree. This paper presents a scheme for MSTP that considers all of the possible Edge-disjoint spanning trees and all of the possible VLANs grouping and finds the best solution based on load balancing on links and switches. Actually, we define three major criterions: load balancing over links, load balancing on switches and shortest path selection. We can weight the importance of each criterion based on our goal.

BPEL provides a workflow-oriented composition model for service-oriented solutions that facilitates the system integration through orchestration and choreography of services. In some cases, BPEL process designs can be highly complex owing to the vast number of services executed in global markets. Such heavy coupling and context dependency with partners in one side and the complicated structure of the processes on the other side, provoke several undesirable drawbacks such as poor understandability, inflexibility, inadaptability, and defects. Therefore, heavy context dependency should be avoided. This paper proposes a quantitative metric to measure BPEL process context-independency which lead SOA architect determines to the extent that a BPEL process is context-independent.

One of the key activities needed to construct a quality service-oriented solution is specification of the architectural elements. Selection of an appropriate and proven method for specification of the elements consisted of services, flows, and components is thus fundamental to successful service-oriented system development in an enterprise. Existing methods for service specification ignore the automation capability while providing human-based prescriptive guidelines, which mostly are not applicable at enterprise scales. This paper proposes a novel method called ASSM (Automated Service Specification Method) that automatically specifies the architecturally significant elements of service-oriented systems. Therefore, ASSM effectively specifies the architectural elements of the service models. Model transformations such as ASSM, automate the labor-intensive activities and lead the architect to focus on more important activities, which need human intelligence, and eventually enable efficient development of service-based solutions.

Realizing self-managing systems poses several development and operational challenges. Reusable software frameworks assist in addressing these challenges by utilizing appropriate patterns, and also providing essential runtime services for self-managing systems. This paper presents the StarMX framework, designed for building self-managing Java-based applications. It is a generic framework based on standards and well-established principles, and supports common tasks in the development of such systems. StarMX facilitates creating the management closed loop using various mechanisms such as action policies. The framework architecture and its utilization process, along with an example of its application are presented in this paper. Moreover, quality attributes and autonomic characteristics of the proposed framework are discussed.

A major research challenge in the IT domain nowadays is to enable new experiences by building intelligent spaces around users, enhanced by pervasive computing services. The European FP7 Project PERSIST (PERsonal Self-Improving SmarT spaces) is investigating a novel approach to meet this challenge. PERSIST aims to define an ecosystem on top of which novel pervasive services can be built. This paper explains the notion of a Personal Smart Space (PSS), provides a reference case study and describes some aspects of how PSSs might operate. PERSIST is also researching on new paradigms for harmonizing p2p functionalities with network services. We present a case study and bring into focus the main challenges We are mastering for pursuing a middleware to support PSSs management and mutual interaction. © 2009 IEEE.

As multicore and heterogeneous multiprocessor platforms replace uniprocessor systems, software programs must be designed with a greater emphasis on concurrency. Threading has become the dominant paradigm of concurrent computation in the most popular programming languages. Large threaded programs are known to be difficult to implement correctly, comprehend, and maintain, while concurrent programs written in process algebraic paradigms of concurrency, such as communicating sequential processes, are known to be easier to analyze. This paper presents our initial work on reverse engineering threaded source code and transforming the code into functionally-equivalent message-passing code. The paper also explores future work needed to convert the message-passing code into communicating sequential processes.

This paper addresses the challenge of multi-policy optimization in decentralized autonomic systems. We evaluate several multi-policy reinforcement learning-based optimization techniques in an urban traffic control simulation, a canonical example of a decentralized autonomic system. Our results indicate that W-learning, which learns separately for each policy and then selects between nominated actions based on current action importance, is a suitable approach for optimization towards multiple policies on non-collaborating agents in heterogeneous autonomic environments.
