New knowledge in science and engineering relies increasingly on results produced by scientific software. Therefore, knowing how scientists develop and use software in their research is critical to assessing the necessity for improving current development practices and to making decisions about the future allocation of resources. To that end, this paper presents the results of a survey conducted online in October-December 2008 which received almost 2000 responses. Our main conclusions are that (1) the knowledge required to develop and use scientific software is primarily acquired from peers and through self-study, rather than from formal education and training; (2) the number of scientists using supercomputers is small compared to the number using desktop or intermediate computers; (3) most scientists rely primarily on software with a large user base; (4) while many scientists believe that software testing is important, a smaller number believe they have sufficient understanding about testing concepts; and (5) that there is a tendency for scientists to rank standard software engineering concepts higher if they work in large software development projects and teams, but that there is no uniform trend of association between rank of importance of software engineering concepts and project/team size.

This paper presents a study on method to develop student model by identifying the students' characteristics in an adaptive hypermedia learning system. The study involves the use of student profiling techniques to identify the features that may be useful to help the researchers have a better understanding of the student in an adaptive learning environment. We propose a supervised Kohonen network with hexagonal lattice structure to classify the student into 3 categories: beginner, intermediate and advance to represent their knowledge level while using the learning system. An experiment is conducted to see the proposed Kohonen network's performances compared to the other types of Kohonen networks in term of learning algorithm and map structure. 10-fold cross validation method is used to validate the network performances. Results from the experiment shows that the proposed Kohonen network produces an average percentage of accuracy, 81.3889% in classifying the simulated data and 51.6129% when applied to the real student data.

This work presents a study undertaken to characterise the FINISTERRAE supercomputer, one of the biggest NUMA systems in Europe. The main objective was to determine the performance effect of bus contention and cache coherency as well as the suitability of porting strategies regarding irregular codes in such a complex architecture. Results show that: (1) cores which share a socket can be considered as independent processors in this context; (2) for big data sizes, the effect of sharing a bus degrades the final performance but masks the cache coherency effects; (3) the NUMA factor (remote to local memory latency ratio) is an important factor on irregular codes and (4) the default kernel allocation policy is not optimal in this system. These results allow us to understand the behaviour of thread-to-core mappings and memory allocation policies.

Distributed Web-based applications have been progressively increasing in number and scale over the past decades. There is an intensification of the need for security frameworks in the era of Web-based applications when we refer to distributed telemedicine interoperability architectures. In contrast, service oriented architecture (SOA) is gaining popularity day by day when we specially consider the Web applications. SOA is playing a major role to maintain the security standards of distributed applications. This paper proposes a secure Web-based architectural design by using the standards of SOA for distributed Web application that maintains the interoperability and data integration through certain secure channels. We have created CRUD (Create,Read, Update, Delete) operations that has an implication on our own created web services and we propose a secure architecture that is implemented on CRUD operations.

GINGA, today an ITU-T recommendation H.761, was developed to be the middleware of the Brazilian digital TV model. The DIGA GINGA (digital automation monitoring and control using GINGA technology) is part of the GINGA CDN project (code development network), a Brazilian research network that aims to add value to GINGA, producing components and applications. The main idea of DIGA GINGA is to share a computational structure of the digital TV set-top-box adding services to users, such as tracking the physical environment (home security), personal monitoring (vital signs) and other applications for home automation. The DIGA GINGA environment will test two of the components specified in the GINGA CDN project, data persistence and channel of return (interactivity channel), which are being implemented at the group of computer networks - GREAT. This study will also present the implementation of a prototype, which provides monitoring and support for who are in a state of recovery or are carriers of diseases that require intensive medical supervision.

The apparent paradoxes of multipresence, having avatars in multiple places simultaneously, are resolvable by an 'autofocus' feature, which uses reciprocity to project overlaid soundscapes and simulate the precedence effect to consolidate the display. We have developed an interface for narrowcasting functions for networked mobile devices deployed in a Collaborative Virtual Environment. Featuring multiple icons in a '2.5D' application, the interface can be used to control motion, sensitivity, and audibility of avatars in a teleconference. The interface is integrated with other clients through a 'servent' (server/client hybrid) HTTP-TCP/IP bridge, interoperating with a heterogeneous groupware suite including stereographic panoramic browsers and spatial audio backends and speaker arrays. The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, in cooperation with Stanford University's Department of computer Science, was pleased to present the 2009 Spring Symposium Series, held Monday through Wednesday, March 23-25, 2009, at Stanford University. The titles of the nine symposia were Agents That Learn from Human Teachers, Benchmarking of Qualitative Spatial and Temporal Reasoning Systems, Experimental Design for Real- World Systems, Human Behavior Modeling, Intelligent Event Processing, Intelligent Narrative Technologies II, Learning by Reading and Learning to Read, Social Semantic Web: Where Web 2.0 Meets Web 3.0, and Technosocial Predictive Analytics. The goal of the Agents That Learn from Human Teachers symposium was to investigate how we can enable software and robotics agents to leam from real-time interaction with an everyday human partner. The aim of the Benchmarking of Qualitative Spatial and Temporal Reasoning Systems symposium was to initiate the development of a problem repository in the field of qualitative spatial and temporal reasoning and identify a graded set of challenges for future midterm and long-term research. The Experimental Design symposium discussed the challenges of evaluating AI systems. The Human Behavior Modeling symposium explored reasoning methods for understanding various aspects of human behavior, especially in the context of designing intelligent systems that interact with humans. The Intelligent Event Processing symposium discussed the need for more Al-based approaches in event pro-cessing and defined a kind of research agenda for the field, coined as intelligent complex event processing (iCEP). The Intelligent Narrative Technologies IIAAAI symposium discussed innovations, progress, and novel techniques in the research domain.
