This report summarizes the proceedings of the first day of the Metagenomics, Metadata and MetaAnalysis (M3) workshop held at the Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology 2010 conference. The second day, which was dedicated to the inaugural meeting of the BioSharing initiative is presented in a separate report. The Genomic Standards Consortium (GSC) hosted the first day of this Special Interest group (SIG) at ISMB to continue exploring the bottlenecks and emerging solutions for obtaining biological insights through large-scale comparative analysis of metagenomic datasets. The M3 SIG included invited and selected talks and a panel discussion at the end of the day involving the plenary speakers. This report summarizes the proceedings of the one day BioSharing meeting held at the Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology (ISMB) 2010 conference in Boston, MA, USA This inaugural BioSharing event was hosted by the Genomic Standards Consortium as part of its M3 & BioSharing special interest group (SIG) workshop. The BioSharing event included invited talks from a range of community leaders and a panel discussion at the end of the day. The panel session led to the formal agreement among community leaders to join together to promote cross-community knowledge exchange and collaborations. A key focus of the newly formed Biosharing community will be linking up resources to promote real-world data sharing (virtuous cycle of data) and supporting compliance with data policies through the creation of a one-stop-portal of information. A regenerative optical grooming switch for interconnecting 130 Gbit/s and 40 Gbit/s networks with switching functionality in time, space and wavelength domain is demonstrated. Lab and field demonstrations show the feasibility of the new concept developed by the TRIUMPH project consortia. Q-factors above 20 dB are reported. ©2009 IEEE.

In this work we analyze the complexity of local broadcasting in the physical interference model. We present two distributed randomized algorithms: one that assumes that each node knows how many nodes there are in its geographical proximity, and another, which makes no assumptions about topology knowledge. We show that, if the transmission probability of each node meets certain characteristics, the analysis can be decoupled from the global nature of the physical interference model, and each node performs a successful local broadcast in time proportional to the number of neighbors in its physical proximity. We also provide worst-case optimality guarantees for both algorithms and demonstrate their behavior in average scenarios through simulations. © 2008 ACM.

The rapid technology advances enable healthcare system to monitor physiological signals in human's daily life. The wearable healthcare system should be not only small and easy for users to wear them but accurate in measuring physiological signals in daily life without any inconvenience. To meet these requirements we propose a headband-style device to be easily wearable, Smart Headband. It measures a photoplethysmography (PPG) signal at the forehead for monitoring the heart rate and acceleration signals for counting the number of steps. For the precise measurement, we adopt Adaptive Noise Cancellation (ANC). Smart Headband can provide the healthcare service to monitor the health state and to alert emergency situation. ©2008 IEEE.

A number of Denial of Service (DoS) attacks in IEEE 802.11 are due to unauthenticated/unencrypted management and control frames. Current IEEE 802.11 simulators deal with Physical and MAC layers and do not include the exchange of management and control frames, thus making it difficult to simulate an attack (DoS) and its possible solution. A basic IEEE 802.11 network simulator using Verilog is presented. Basic aim is to design a simulator using a hardware description language (HDL) such as Verilog, since the functions and protocols described in state machines are best simulated using a HDL. Besides simulation of a simple wireless network, the paper also presents simulation of a spoofed MAC disassociation DoS attack and one of its possible solutions. The proposed simulator includes the communication setup process and can be used for simulating other DoS attacks and their possible solutions.

In this paper we propose a cooperation modeling approach which aims to the alignment of system development with the organizational change where the system will operate. Automatic verification by means of extended static checking (ESC) has seen some success in industry and academia due to its lightweight and easyto- use nature. Unfortunately, ESC comes at a cost: A host of logical and practical completeness and soundness issues. Interactive verification technology, on the other hand, is usually complete and sound, but requires a large amount of mathematical and practical expertise. Most programmers can be expected to use automatic, but not interactive, verification. The focus of this proposal is to integrate these two approaches into a single theoretical and practical framework, leveraging the benefits of each approach. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2008.
