The ability to reengineer object-oriented legacy systems has become a vital matter in today's software industry. Early adopters of the object-oriented programming paradigm are now facing the problem of transforming their object-oriented "legacy" systems into full-fledged frameworks. To address this problem, a series of workshops has been organised to set up a forum for exchanging experiences, discussing solutions, and exploring new ideas. Typically, these workshops were organised as satellite events of major software engineering conferences, such as ECOOP [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11] and ESEC/FSE [12,13,14] . During the past 10 years, participants of this workshop series have been actively contributing to the state-of-the-art on reengineering of object-oriented systems. This special 10 th anniversary edition was no exception and this report summarises the key discussions and outcome of that workshop. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

In a previous work, we reported and experimented with a stress testing methodology to detect network traffic-related Real-Time (RT) faults in Distributed Real-Time Systems (DRTSs) based on the design UML models. The stress methodology, referred to as Time-Shifting Stress Test Methodology (TSSTM), aimed at increasing chances of discovering RT faults originating from network traffic overloads in DRTSs. The TSSTM uses the UML 2.0 model of a System Under Test (SUT), augmented with timing information, and is based on an analysis of the control flow in UML sequence diagrams. In order to devise deterministic test requirements (from time point of view) that yield the maximum stress test scenario in terms of network traffic in a SUT, the TSSTM methodology requires that the timing information of messages in sequence diagrams is available and as precise as possible. In reality, however, the timing information of messages is not always available and precise. As we demonstrate using a case study in this work, the effectiveness of the stress test cases generated by TSSTM is very sensitive to such time uncertainty. In other words, TSSTM might generate imprecise and not necessarily maximum stressing test cases in the presence of such time uncertainty and, thus, it might not be very effective in revealing RT faults. To address the above limitation of TSSTM, we present in this article a modified testing methodology which can be used to stress test systems when the timing information of messages is imprecise or unpredictable. The stress test results of applying the new test methodology to a prototype DRTS indicate that, in the presence of uncertainty in timing information of messages, the new methodology is more effective in detecting RT faults when compared to our previous methodology (i.e., TSSTM) and also test cases based on an operational profile.

One of the important and effort-consuming aspects in the development of real-time (RT) systems is the analysis of RT job arrival times, i.e., finding the time instant(s) or time interval(s) when tasks are allowed to start. The analysis of arrival times becomes complex when the number of RT tasks under analysis grows and also when RT tasks have different arrival patterns, e.g., periodic. We present in this paper an automatable UML-based arrival time analysis formalism for RT systems. To show the applicability and effectiveness of our formalism, an example arrival time analysis using the formalism is presented.

A challenge in using machine learning for tasks such as network intrusion detection and fault diagnosis is the difficulty in obtaining clean data for training in order to model the normal behavior of the *** anomaly detection techniques such as one class support vector machines (SVMs) have been introduced to overcome this *** class support vector machines model the normal or target data using non-linear surfaces in the input space while ignoring the anomalous *** approach to this problem is based on fitting a hyperellipsoid with a minimal effective radius,centered at the origin,around a majority of the data vectors in a higher dimensional *** formulate this as a linear optimisation problem,which is advantageous in terms of its computational *** demonstrate using real data from the Great Duck Island Project that our approach achieves better detection performance and flexibility in terms of parameter selection,compared to an earlier detection scheme using a quarter sphere SVM.

The wide spread acceptance of IEEE WLANs is a result of industrial standardization to ensure product compatibility and reliability among various manufacturers. Several WLANs solutions are available with varying characteristics and interoperability. The IEEE Standard 802.11 is one of the most widely adopted mechanisms for wireless LANs. It defines both physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) layer protocol however;it provides limited data confidentiality and has cumbersome procedure for key exchange. In response IEEE introduced a port based network access control standard 802.1x to authenticate and authorize devices interconnected various IEEE 802 LANs. 802.1x only defines authentication not the actual authentication method which allows the developers to construct their own algorithm and consequently a lot of wireless vendors implemented their own 802.1x adaptation such as MD5 Message Digest 5, TLS (Transport Layer Security), TTLS (Tunneled TLS), PEAP (Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol), LEAP (Lightweight Extensible Authentication Protocol) and others. This versatility in 802.1x adaptations has made it difficult for the WLANs users to choose an appropriate mechanism in relation to performance and security of networks. An effort has been made in [1] to carry out comparative analysis of IEEE authentication methods in different security combinations. This work supplements the efforts cited in [1] and incorporates more results in added network configurations. The paper finally recommends the users an appropriate IEEE authentication methods depending upon the need, requirements and security concerns.

The rapid technology advances enable healthcare system to monitor physiological signals in human's daily life. The wearable healthcare system should be not only small and easy for users to wear them but accurate in measuring physiological signals in daily life without any inconvenience. To meet these requirements we propose a headband-style device to be easily wearable, smart headband. It measures a photo-plethysmography (PPG) signal at the forehead for monitoring the heart rate and acceleration signals for counting the number of steps. For the precise measurement, we adopt adaptive noise cancellation (ANC). Smart headband can provide the healthcare service to monitor the health state and to alert emergency situation.

The ability to accurately predict radio propagation behavior for wireless communication systems, such as cellular mobile radio, is becoming crucial to system design. Since site measurements are costly, propagation models have been developed as suitable, low-cost, and convenient alternative. In this paper, we will propose a new generic signal propagation model for Wi-Fi and WiMAX environments. To develop this model we used existing models which are classified as: Free space models and land propagation models. This includes different types of loss: path loss, slow fading (shadowing) and fast fading. Our aim is to have a flexible model to be applicable in indoor and outdoor environments. Experiments carried out for indoor Wi-Fi and outdoor WiMAX cases have shown excellent results for the proposed model.

The QAOOSE 2007 workshop brought together, for half day, researchers working on several aspects related to quantitative evaluation of software artifacts developed with the object-oriented paradigm and related technologies. Ideas and experiences were shared and discussed. This report includes a summary of the technical presentations and subsequent discussions raised by them. Exceptionally this year, one of the founders of the workshop, Horst Zuse, gave a keynote on the Theoretical Foundations of Object-Oriented Measurement. Three out of the four submitted position papers were presented, covering different aspects such as measuring inconsistencies, visualizing metric values, and assessing the subjective quality of systems. In the closing session, the participants discussed open issues and challenges arising from researching in this area and tried to forecast what will be hot research topics in the short and medium terms. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Wireless sensor networks are deployed for the purpose of sensing and monitoring an area of interest. Sensors in the sensor network can suffer from both random and systematic bias problems. Even when the sensors are properly calibrated at the time of their deployment, they develop drift in their readings leading to erroneous inferences being made by the network. The drift in this context is defined as a slow, unidirectional, long-term change in the sensor measurements. In this paper we present a novel algorithm for detecting and correcting sensors drifts by utilising the spatio-temporal correlation between neigbouring sensors. Based on the assumption that neighbouring sensors have correlated measurements and that the instantiation of drift in a sensor is uncorrelated with other sensors, each sensor runs a support vector regression algorithm on its neigbourspsila corrected readings to obtain a predicted value for its measurements. It then uses this predicted data to self-assess its measurement and detect and correct its drift using a Kalman filter. The algorithm is run recursively and is totally decentralized. We demonstrate using real data obtained from the Intel Berkeley Laboratory that our algorithm successfully suppresses drifts developed in sensors and thereby prolongs the effective lifetime of the network.

The wearable healthcare system should be not only small and easy for users to wear them but accurate in measuring physiological signals in daily life without any inconvenience. To meet these requirements, we propose the U-healthcare System which consists of a Smart Headband and a Health-state Monitor program. It can monitor the health-state in walking and running. The Smart Headband measures a photo-plethysmography (PPG) signal at the forehead for monitoring the heart rate and acceleration signals. The Health-state Monitor program is developed to show the health-state. Health-state Monitor program is operated in the handheld computer, such like (Ultra Mobile Personal computer (UMPC). It provides the user PPG, heart rate and steps for the precise measurement, Adaptive Noise Cancellation (ANC) is introduced. The Smart Headband and the Health-state Monitor program are communicated by the WPAN using Zigbee protocol. If the heart rate is higher or lower than usual, the Health-state Monitor program sends the SMS message to the designated person, such as family or the attending physician in the medical center, to inform the emergency situation.
