A topical VAEGAN-IHMM approach for automatic story segmentation

Feature representations with rich topic information can greatly improve the performance of story segmentation tasks. VAEGAN offers distinct advantages in feature learning by combining variational autoencoder (VAE) and generative adversarial network (GAN), which not only captures intricate data representations through VAE's probabilistic encoding and decoding mechanism but also enhances feature diversity and quality via GAN's adversarial training. To better learn topical domain representation, we used a topical classifier to supervise the training process of VAEGAN. Based on the learned feature, a segmentor splits the document into shorter ones with different topics. Hidden Markov model (HMM) is a popular approach for story segmentation, in which stories are viewed as instances of topics (hidden states). The number of states has to be set manually but it is often unknown in real scenarios. To solve this problem, we proposed an infinite HMM (IHMM) approach which utilized an HDP prior on transition matrices over countably infinite state spaces to automatically infer the state's number from the data. Given a running text, a Blocked Gibbis sampler labeled the states with topic classes. The position where the topic changes was a story boundary. Experimental results on the TDT2 corpus demonstrated that the proposed topical VAEGAN-IHMM approach was significantly better than the traditional HMM method in story segmentation tasks and achieved state-of-the-art performance. © 2024 the Author(s).

Sharding is a promising technique to tackle the critical weakness of scalability in blockchain-based unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)search and rescue(SAR)*** breaking up the blockchain network into smaller partitions called shards that run independently and in parallel,shardingbased UAV systems can support a large number of search and rescue UAVs with improved scalability,thereby enhancing the rescue ***,the lack of adaptability and interoperability still hinder the application of sharded blockchain in UAV SAR *** refers to making adjustments to the blockchain towards real-time surrounding situations,while interoperability refers to making cross-shard interactions at the mission *** address the above challenges,we propose a blockchain UAV system for SAR missions based on dynamic sharding *** from the benefits in scalability brought by sharding,our system improves adaptability by dynamically creating configurable and mission-exclusive shards,and improves interoperability by supporting calls between smart contracts that are deployed on different *** implement a prototype of our system based on Quorum,give an analysis of the improved adaptability and interoperability,and conduct experiments to evaluate the *** results show our system can achieve the above goals and overcome the weakness of blockchain-based UAV systems in SAR scenarios.

ViF-SD2E: a robust weakly-supervised framework for neural decoding

Neural decoding plays a vital role in the interaction between the brain and the outside world. Our task in this paper is to decode the movement track of a finger directly based on the neural data. Existing neural decoding solutions primarily perform some preprocessing operations on neural data before feeding them into existing models (such as LSTM) for decoding. However, these solutions either are prone to overfitting or cannot well exploit the spatial and temporal information. In our previous observations, there is a symmetrical phenomenon between the unsupervised decoded trajectory and the ground truth trajectory within the activity space. This precisely motivates us to propose (or derive) a robust weakly-supervised framework (or model structure), called ViF-SD2E, for neural decoding. In particular, it consists of a space-division (SD) module and an exploration–exploitation (2E) strategy, to effectively exploit both the spatial information of the outside world and the temporal information of neural activity, where the SD2E output is analogized with the weak 0/1 vision feedback (ViF) label for training. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, which can sometimes be comparable to supervised counterparts. Therefore, we redirect our attention to the information (hidden in data) ViF-SD2E conveys to us. In other words, we believe that the advantage of ViF-SD2E lies in the fact that its processing steps are objectively determined by the inherent attributes (i.e., symmetry) of the neural data, or rather, the model structure is fixed. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

The API Rate Limit pattern controls the rate at which clients make API requests by counting the number of requests in a specified time interval and reacting against abusive clients, in order to protect the limited resources of the API from exhaustion and denial of service attacks. This practice helps service providers to prevent abuse and ensure fair resource allocation, maintain system stability, monitor and control service availability, protect against DDoS attacks In this research paper, we have identified patterns covering the API Rate Limit pattern adoption starting from its documentation to its implementation. Our objective is to elucidate the trade-offs associated with different identified patterns and offer guidance to developers in making informed decisions when choosing the most suitable Rate Limit method, scope, and granularity for their service. By providing a comprehensive overview of how to adopt the Rate Limit pattern, this paper aims to enhance the understanding of how APIs can be designed to facilitate high scalability, security, reliability, and service availability. OCRBench: on the hidden mystery of OCR in large multimodal models

Large models have recently played a dominant role in natural language processing and multimodal vision-language learning. However, their effectiveness in text-related visual tasks remains relatively unexplored. In this paper, we conducted a comprehensive evaluation of large multimodal models, such as GPT4V and Gemini, in various text-related visual tasks including text recognition, scene text-centric visual question answering(VQA), document-oriented VQA, key information extraction(KIE), and handwritten mathematical expression recognition(HMER). To facilitate the assessment of optical character recognition(OCR) capabilities in large multimodal models, we propose OCRBench, a comprehensive evaluation benchmark. OCRBench contains 29 datasets, making it the most comprehensive OCR evaluation benchmark available. Furthermore, our study reveals both the strengths and weaknesses of these models, particularly in handling multilingual text, handwritten text, non-semantic text, and mathematical expression *** importantly, the baseline results presented in this study could provide a foundational framework for the conception and assessment of innovative strategies targeted at enhancing zero-shot multimodal *** evaluation pipeline and benchmark are available at https://***/Yuliang-Liu/Multimodal OCR.

Enhancing Security in Distributed Drone-Based Litchi Fruit Recognition and Localization Systems

This paper introduces an advanced and efficient method for distributed drone-based fruit recognition and localization, tailored to satisfy the precision and security requirements of autonomous agricultural operations. Our method incorporates depth information to ensure precise localization and utilizes a streamlined detection network centered on the RepVGG module. This module replaces the traditional C2f module, enhancing detection performance while maintaining speed. To bolster the detection of small, distant fruits in complex settings, we integrate Selective Kernel Attention (SKAttention) and a specialized small-target detection layer. This adaptation allows the system to manage difficult conditions, such as variable lighting and obstructive foliage. To reinforce security, the tasks of recognition and localization are distributed among multiple drones, enhancing resilience against tampering and data manipulation. This distribution also optimizes resource allocation through collaborative processing. The model remains lightweight and is optimized for rapid and accurate detection, which is essential for real-time applications. Our proposed system, validated with a D435 depth camera, achieves a mean Average Precision (mAP) of 0.943 and a frame rate of 169 FPS, which represents a significant improvement over the baseline by 0.039 percentage points and 25 FPS, respectively. Additionally, the average localization error is reduced to 0.82 cm, highlighting the model’s high precision. These enhancements render our system highly effective for secure, autonomous fruit-picking operations, effectively addressing significant performance and cybersecurity challenges in agriculture. This approach establishes a foundation for reliable, efficient, and secure distributed fruit-picking applications, facilitating the advancement of autonomous systems in contemporary agricultural practices.

Optimisation of sparse deep autoencoders for dynamic network embedding

Network embedding(NE)tries to learn the potential properties of complex networks represented in a low-dimensional feature ***,the existing deep learningbased NE methods are time-consuming as they need to train a dense architecture for deep neural networks with extensive unknown weight parameters.A sparse deep autoencoder(called SPDNE)for dynamic NE is proposed,aiming to learn the network structures while preserving the node evolution with a low computational *** tries to use an optimal sparse architecture to replace the fully connected architecture in the deep autoencoder while maintaining the performance of these models in the dynamic ***,an adaptive simulated algorithm to find the optimal sparse architecture for the deep autoencoder is *** performance of SPDNE over three dynamical NE models(*** architecture-based deep autoencoder method,DynGEM,and ElvDNE)is evaluated on three well-known benchmark networks and five real-world *** experimental results demonstrate that SPDNE can reduce about 70%of weight parameters of the architecture for the deep autoencoder during the training process while preserving the performance of these dynamical NE *** results also show that SPDNE achieves the highest accuracy on 72 out of 96 edge prediction and network reconstruction tasks compared with the state-of-the-art dynamical NE algorithms.

Understanding the effect of cathodic reaction on corrosion-enhanced erosion in sand-entraining electrolyte

In this study,the pure erosion behaviour of pure iron and its erosion-corrosion behaviour under different anodic polarization currents were investigated in various cathodic reactions(oxygen reduction,hydrogen ion reduction,and water reduction)using a cylindrical stirring *** corrosion-enhanced erosion(C-E)rates were determined for each *** results revealed that pure iron displayed similar pure erosion behaviour across all three cathodic *** the cathodic reactions involve hydrogen ion reduction or water reduction,the erosion-corrosion of pure iron manifested as uniform damage,with the reduction in hardness being the main cause of the C-E in this ***,in the case of oxy-gen reduction reaction as the cathodic reaction,the erosion-corrosion presented as pitting damage,with the reduction in hardness resulting from localized concentration of anodic current and the formation of easily worn protruding flaky iron structures at the edges of the pits as the main mechanism of the ***,linear and exponential relationships were found between the C-E rate and the anodic current density for uniform damage and pitting damage,***,the concept of surface equivalent hardness was proposed,along with the establishment of a mathematical model for surface equivalent hardness based on the relationships between the C-E rate and the anodic current *** the surface equivalent hardness enables the evaluation of the erosion rate on material surfaces considering the coupled effect.

Transaction transmission model for blockchain channels based on non-cooperative games

In blockchain networks, transactions can be transmitted through channels. The existing transmission methods depend on their routing information. If a node randomly chooses a channel to transmit a transaction, the transmission may be aborted due to insufficient funds(also called balance) or a low transmission rate. To increase the success rate and reduce transmission delay across all transactions, this work proposes a transaction transmission model for blockchain channels based on non-cooperative game *** balance, channel states, and transmission probability are fully considered. This work then presents an optimized channel transaction transmission algorithm. First, channel balances are analyzed and suitable channels are selected if their balance is sufficient. Second, a Nash equilibrium point is found by using an iterative sub-gradient method and its related channels are then used to transmit transactions. The proposed method is compared with two state-of-the-art approaches: Silent Whispers and Speedy Murmurs. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves transmission success rate, reduces transmission delay,and effectively decreases transmission overhead in comparison with its two competitive peers.

An energy constraint position-based dynamics with corrected SPH kernel

We introduce an improved position-based dynamics method with corrected smoothed particle hydrodynamics(SPH) kernel to simulate deformable solids. Using a strain energy constraint that follows the continuum mechanics, the method can maintain the efficiency and stability of the position-based approach while improving the physical plausibility of the simulation. We can easily simulate the behavior of anisotropic and plastic materials because the method is based on physics. Unlike the previous position-based simulations of continuous materials, we use weakly structured particles to discretize the model for the convenience of deformable object cutting. In this case, a corrected SPH kernel function is adopted to measure the deformation gradient and calculate the strain energy on each particle. We also propose a solution for the interparticle inversion and penetration in large deformation. To perform complex interaction scenarios, we provide a simple method for collision detection. We demonstrate the flexibility, efficiency, and robustness of the proposed method by simulating various scenes, including anisotropic elastic deformation, plastic deformation, model cutting, and large-scale elastic collision.
