In this paper, we present a Sound Source Localization (SSL) with robot auditory system for a network-based intelligent service robots that give a service in variety places. The main goal of this paper is to analysis performance of SSL algorithm in real environment for robot. We gathered the sound databases in museum, conference hall and restaurant for SSL experiments. These places will be served by intelligent robot in actually. With using these databases, we compared some of SSL algorithms and searched that we can use the SLL for intelligent robot in real environment. Algorithms for calculating time delay are based on the advanced cross correlation and GCC (Generalized Cross-Correlation)-PHAT(Phase Transform) by frequency characteristics for calculating time delay estimation. The robot platform used in this work is wever-R2, which is a network-based intelligent service robot developed at Intelligent Robot research Division in ETRI.

Description logic based semantic query needs complete information from sources of knowledge where available information is often incomplete. To solve such incomplete reasoning problem, this paper embedded default logic into the description logic knowledge base, meanwhile prioritized the default rules, which preferred more specific default rules over more general ones. Then, an original incomplete query could be transformed into a complete query relative to the extended knowledge base, by checking default satisfiability of complex concept in accord with the query. Furthermore, the default satisfiability can be detected through a new extended tableau algorithm.

Although some efforts have been made to endow description logics with default reasoning capabilities, we hardly heard about the considerable attention to the preference of default rules in extended description logic. This paper makes a new prioritized default extension to the description logic knowledge base for default reasoning. Introducing and prioritizing default rules, it provides the mathematic foundation for querying information from original incomplete description logic knowledge base. Thus, a complete information query based on the integrated systems with default information can boil down to checking default satisfiability of the complex concept.

In order to provide high resource utilization and QoS assurance inutility computing hosting concurrently various services, this paper proposes aservice computing framework-RAINBOW for VM(Virtual Machine)-basedutility computing. In RAINBOW, we present a priority-based resourcescheduling scheme including resource flowing algorithms (RFaVM) to optimizeresource allocations amongst services. The principle of RFaVM is preferentiallyensuring performance of some critical services by degrading of others to someextent when resource competition arises. Based on our prototype, we evaluateRAINBOW and RFaVM. The experimental results show that RAINBOWwithout RFaVM provides 28%-324% improvements in service performance,and 26% higher the average CPU utilization than traditional service computingframework (TSF) in typical enterprise environment. RAINBOW with RFaVMfurther improves performance by 25%-42% for those critical services whileonly introducing up to 7% performance degradation to others, with 2%-8%more improvements in resource utilization than RAINBOW without RFaVM.

This paper presents the “position papers” contributed by the participants of a panel at the 2008 Winter Simulation Conference. As the paper pre-dates the actual panel, the purpose of the paper is to provide some background information about the views of the individual panelists prior to the actual panel. Each panelist was asked to submit a position paper addressing the general question of “What makes good Modeling and Simulation research?” This paper presents a summary of these position papers along with an introduction and conclusion aimed at identifying the common themes to setup the conference panel.

This paper presents the use of the Unified Modeling Language (UML) in the context of object-oriented modelling and simulation of hybrid systems with Modelica. The definition of a specialized version of UML for the graphical description and model based development of hybrid systems in Modelica - the UMLH - was taken place in the GENSIM project [1, 2]. For a better support of the modelling process, an UMLH editor with different views (class diagrams, statechart diagrams, collaboration diagrams) was implemented as a part of the Modelica simulation tool MOSILAB [3]. In the EOOLTworkshop the use of UMLH and its semantics will be demonstrated by the development of a simplified model of a Pool-Billiard game in Modelica.

Block motion estimation with full search is computationally complex. To reduce this complexity, different methods have been proposed, including partial distortion, which can reduce the computational complexity with no loss of image quality. We propose a distortion-based partial distortion search (DPDS) based on the magnitude of distortion and adaptive update of the matching order. We calculate absolute differences for all pixels in the predicted block point. Pixels are then sorted by the amount of distortion in a descending order for the matching process, which produces a scanning map. The sum of the absolute differences (SAD) of other candidate positions is then computed from this matching order. We also use an update of the scanning map by checking the increase in the number of absolute differences for the SAD value. The proposed DPDS algorithm improves the computational efficiency, compared with the original PDS scheme, because the accumulated value of the absolute pixel differences can rapidly reach the current minimum SAD value. The proposed algorithm is 4-13 times faster than the full search method with the same visual quality.

The recent video coding standard H.264/AVC show extremely higher coding efficiency compare to any other previous standards. Although H.264/AVC can achieve over 50 % of bit rate saving with same quality using the rate-distortion process, but it brings high computational complexity. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that can reduce the complexity of the codec by reducing the block mode decision process adaptively. In this paper an efficient method is proposed to reduce the inter mode decision coding complexity using the direct prediction methods based on inter block correlation and adaptive rate distortion cost threshold for early stopping. The intra mode decision complexity is also reduced using the early intra skip method. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve up to 43.85-74.12% speed up ratio with a little PSNR loss. Increment in bit requirement is also not much noticeable.
