As a consequence of the proliferation of multimedia contents, users are nowadays frustrated with the huge amount of available video information whose content is not targeted to their needs and preferences. Its challenging to analysis video content for video personalization due to the lack of semantic video summarization and retrieval techniques. In fact, most of current video personalization systems are using low-level features. However, users identify and select video content using high-level semantics. This creates a gap between user preferences and video content representation that must be bridged for video personalization *** this paper we present a new approach for video personalization based on domain knowledge. We first introduce an ontology based indexation approach to enhance retrieval performance. Then, we present a personalization strategy based on fine grained sequential pattern discovery. The proposed approach is based on both user and content personalization. The performance study and experiments show that the use of ontologies to index and represent video contents enhance running time and memory performances. This paper also describes VideoMiner, a system prototype that implement the proposed approach for video personalization.

Under virtualization idea based on large-scale dismantling and sharing, the implementing of network interconnection of calculation components and storage components by loose coupling, which are tightly coupling in traditional server, achieves computing capacity, storage capacity and service capacity distri- bution according to need in application-level. Under the new server model, the segregation and protection of user space and system space as well as the security monitoring of virtual resources are the important factors of ultimate security guarantee. This article presents a large-scale and expansible distributed invasion detection system of virtual computing environment based on virtual machine. The system supports security monitoring management of global resources and provides uniform view of security attacks under virtual computing environment, thereby protecting the user applications and system security under capacity services domain.

In the automotive field, software development methods and tools are used to cope with the high complexity of automotive software development. However, problems occur with the tracing of information, the assessment and monitoring of the development status, late and thus expensive changes, etc, which lead to increasing development costs and time as well as quality deficits. Our experience with recent projects have shown that the key to solving these problems lies in providing proper answers to the following questions: (1) How can development methods be assembled? (2) How can the use of a variety of development methods be supported by an appropriate tool?. To answer these questions, we introduce a tool integration approach that is strongly based on the integration of development methods. The contribution of this paper is (a) a method integration approach that considers finegrained method objects and their specific structure in addition to the usually considered artifacts, (b) an approach to tool integration that overcomes the deficits of heterogeneous tool environments and utilizes the results of the methodical understanding. © 2006 The Authors.

For over ten years Rose-Hulman has required all incoming students to purchase an institute-selected laptop computer and an associated suite of software. Students use their laptops in classrooms on a daily basis. More recently, we have begun to ask: What is beyond the laptop initiative? One possible answer is a combination of pen-based Tablet PCs and interaction-enhancing software like DyKnow Vision. This paper reports: our innovative use of DyKnow Vision software and Tablet PCs (hereafter, DyKnow/Tablets") to promote active learning in the classroom; similarities/differences in our approach across 7 courses covering engineering, humanities and science and involving more than 20% of Rose-Hulman's students; and studies that assess how DyKnow/Tablets affect student learning. Thus, the paper presents an innovative direction that engineering education may take as well as an assessment of some aspects of that direction

This paper presents a helper thread prefetching scheme that is designed to work on loosely-coupled processors, such as in a standard chip multiprocessor (CMP) system or an intelligent memory system. Loosely-coupled processors have an advantage in that fine-grain resources, such as processor and L1 cache resources, are not contended by the application and helper threads, hence preserving the speed of the application. However, inter-processor communication is expensive in such a system. We present techniques to alleviate this. Our approach exploits large loop-based code regions and is based on a new synchronization mechanism between the application and helper threads. This mechanism precisely controls how far ahead the execution of the helper thread can be with respect to the application thread. We found that this is important in ensuring prefetching timeliness and avoiding cache pollution. To demonstrate that prefetching in a loosely-coupled system can be done effectively, we evaluate our prefetching in a standard, unmodified CMP system, and in an intelligent memory system where a simple processor in memory executes the helper thread. Evaluating our scheme with nine memory-intensive applications with the memory processor in DRAM achieves an average speedup of 1.25. Moreover, our scheme works well in combination with a conventional processor-side sequential L1 prefetcher, resulting in an average speedup of 1.31. In a standard CMP, the scheme achieves an average speedup of 1.33.

National institute of Information and Communications technology of Japan (NICT) completed a project on new-generation mobile communications networks for beyond 3G or 4G in March 2006. This paper presents our vision of new-generation mobile communications networks from networking perspective and their capabilities to be offered: fast and large-capacity handover, cross-network handover, cross-device handover, and interworking between real and cyber worlds. Then, Metro Mobile Ring network technology for the first capability, MIRAI architecture for the second and third capabilities, and other works are presented.

3D models are a new kind of cross-media resource which can be frequently seen in the network. Since the amount of them is very huge now, content-based retrieval can help to recognize a certain object or retrieve similar ones from the giant database. This paper presents a new method for deriving 3D moment invariants and uses them as shape descriptors for the representation of 3D models. They are insensitive to surface noise and can be used in pervasive environment conveniently. We also illustrate how to build up experimental system and simulate 3D shape retrieval in wireless environment

Large-scale scientific research often relies on the collaborative use of Grid and e-Science infrastructures that provide computational or storage related resources. One of the ideas of these modern infrastructures is to facilitate the routine interaction of scientists and their workflows with advanced problem solving tools and computational resources. While many production Grid projects and e-Science infrastructures have begun to offer services for the usage of resources to end-users during the past several years, the corresponding emerging standards defined by GGF and OASIS still appear to be in flux. In this paper, we present the GridBean technology that bridges the gap between the constantly changing basic Grid or e-Science infrastructures and the need of stable application development environments for the Grid users.

High precision approach of network delay measurement based on general PC

Delay is the foundation for accurately measuring network performance metrics such as delay jitter, bandwidth, etc. While the delay measurement methods currently used have poor precision, for there exist clock errors and location errors. In this paper, an improved method for delay measurement is proposed. It replaces system clock with TSC (time stamp counter) register as time-stamping to eliminate clock errors, and it removes the time-stamping place from application to network driver to eliminate location errors. The precision has been elevated largely. Experiments show that when comparing with traditional methods under different packet lengths, the improved method can reduce measurement errors 21%-150%, and the measured delays are more stable. Furthermore, it basically has no effect on system throughput. The improved measurement method is based on general PC, so it has lower measurement cost and can be applied widely.
