We present a new compression algorithm for video sequences of indoor scenes, or more generally: sequences containing mostly planar and near-planar surfaces. Our approach utilizes edge and optical flow information in order to segment selected keyframes into regions of general shape, such that the motion of each region is predicted well by a planar homography. With this kind of motion prediction, the errors between the predicted intermediate frames and the actual ones are very small, and can be compactly encoded. Our results demonstrate significant improvements in the accuracy of the compressed video sequences, compared to standard general purpose video compression.

Presents a method for the analysis of time series from drifting or switching dynamics. In an extension to existing approaches that identify switches or drifts between stationary dynamical modes, the method allows one to analyze even continuously varying dynamics and can identify mixtures of more than two dynamical modes. The architecture is based on a mixture of self-organizing Nadaraya-Watson kernel estimators. The mixture model is trained by barrier optimization, a technique for constrained optimization problems. We apply the proposed method to artificially generated data and EEG recordings from the wake/sleep transition.

He has applied most of his 24 years of experience in the application of human engineering technology to maritime systems. Mr. Baker has directed much of Carlow's efforts to reduce ship workload and to improve human performance and maritime safety through application of human factors methods and data. He is a Certified Industrial Ergonomist (CIE) as well as a Certified Human Factors Engineering Professional (CHFEP). Both certifications were granted by Oxford Research where Mr. Baker also serves as an Advisory Board member. Russell D. Krull P.E. is a senior engineer with A&T/Proteus Engineering with more than 18 years of experi-ence in marine engineering naval architecture and program management including 16 years of active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard. Recent experience includes advanced ship design studies engineering software development technical support for the USMC Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle propulsion systems analyses ship structural engineering and cargo handling systems engineering. Mr. Krull has an M.S.E. in naval architecture and marine engineering and an M.S.E. in industrial and operations engineering from University of Michigan and a B.S. in ocean engineering from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Capt. Glenn L. Snyder USCG. Regrettably since this paper was originally written Capt. Snyder has passed away. At the time of his death he was an operations specialist assigned to the Coast Guard's Deepwater Capabilities Replacement Project as Chief of Human Systems Integration. He served as commanding officer of the patrol boat Cape George (WPB-95306) the icebreaking tug Biscayne Bay (WTGB-104) and the cutter Legare (WMEC-911). A 1975 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Capt. Snyder held an M.A. in national security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College and an M.A. in international relations from Salve Regina College. In addition he was a 1998 fellow of the Foreign Service

The U.S. Coast Guard is in the concept exploration phase of its Integrated Deepwater System (IDS) acquisition project. This project will define the next generation of surface, air and command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) assets used to perform the Coast Guard's missions in the IDS environment (>50 NM off the U. S. coastline). As part of early technology investigations, the needs exist to: (1) analyze the workload requirements of the IDS, (2) identify alternative means to perform ship's work, and (3) optimize ship manning consistent with ship workload, performance criteria, and the available tools and equipment aboard. To reduce shipboard work requires an understanding of the mission and support requirements placed on the vessel and crew, how these requirements are currently met, and how requirements might otherwise be met to reduce workload and crew size. This study examined currently implemented workload and manpower reducing approaches of commercial maritime fleets, U.S. and foreign navies, and foreign coastguards. These approaches were analyzed according to evaluation criteria approved by the IDS acquisition project team. From this, strategies for shipboard work reduction that may be considered for adoption by the IDS were identified and analyzed according to performance and costs factors. Ten workload-reducing strategies were identified: damage control, bridge, multiple crewing, engineering, risk acceptance, modularity, deck, enabling technologies, ship/personnel readiness, and operability and maintainability.

Performance analysis is an important step in tuning performance critical applications. It is a cyclic process of measuring and analyzing performance data which is driven by the programmer's hypotheses on potential performance problems. Currently this process is controlled manually by the programmer. We believe that the implicit knowledge applied in this cyclic process should be formalized in order to provide automatic performance analysis for a wider class of programming paradigms and target architectures. This article describes the performance property specification language (ASL) developed in the APART Esprit IV working group which allows specifying performance-related data by an object-oriented model and performance properties by functions and constraints defined over performance-related data. Performance problems and bottlenecks can then be identified based on user-or tool-defined thresholds. In order to demonstrate the usefulness of ASL we apply it to OpenMP by successfully formalizing several OpenMP performance properties. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

Recently, vast amounts of research efforts have been made to derive a higher-level abstraction mechanism than the class abstraction in object oriented languages. Notable examples include the research activities on software architectures and component based software development. Of these, software architectures allow us to focus on the issue of software connectors, which are used to describe interactions between software components in the context of architectural styles. However, few contemporary programming languages support the explicit notion of connectors, which makes it difficult to practice software development based on software architectural concepts. The authors present their experience in implementing software connectors through first-class methods in the Java programming language. They view software connectors as methods over methods and show that a suitable set of reflective facilities can be a nice device for implementing software connectors.

This paper presents a component-based open GIS software system. The system was designed to conform to the international standards proposed by OGC (Open GIS Consortium) and offers a GIS core functions. The open GIS component software system is developed on the Microsoft OLE/COM environment using ATL and Visual C++. As the authors developed five kinds of GIS applications using implemented software, the advantages of component-based Open GIS software is proved.

Performance analysis is an important step in tuning performance critical applications. The implicit knowledge applied in this cyclic process must be formalized in order to be reused in the automation of performance analysis tools. This article describes the performance property specification language ASL developed in the APART Esprit IV working group. ASL allows the specification of performance data via an object model and of performance properties via a specially designed notation. Performance bottlenecks can then be identified based on the specification since bottlenecks are viewed as performance properties with a huge negative impact. We present the ASL language in the context of MPI applications.

We introduce the CROWN (Clustering Resources on Workstation Network) system that consists of several PCs interconnected with the Myrinet. In order to provide multimedia-on-demand services, especially VoD, we have developed CrownFS as a continuous media file system over the Linux operating system. CrownFS is a user level file system. Because the clustering technology is based on off-the-shelf commodities, user-level design and implementation can be natural in a clustering system and has a great benefit in portability. The architecture of CrownFS and its usage for VoD service are presented. Field test results show that a prototype CrownFS VoD server with four nodes can provide 150 MPEG-1 streams concurrently. CrownFS can also be extended to support a discrete media file system and to provide over a thousand multimedia streams.

In order to eliminate limitations of conventional modeling and dynamic prediction methods, multilayer dynamic forward networks are considered as the models of oil field systems, the prediction models and technology of multilayer dynamic forward networks are studied. The deficiency of a recursive prediction error learning algorithm is analysed. An improvement scheme is given. So, the algorithm performance is improved. Thus the method of modeling and prediction for an oil field is renewed. During using the new scheme, excellent results have been obtained which proves that the new scheme is very effective.
