In the world of pervasive computing where large management systems, as well as small devices, all become interconnected, the problem of the configuration and management of networks is becoming increasingly complex. System administrators have to deal with many problems due to the increasingly distributed architecture of systems. Jini, a new paradigm for the development and management of distributed systems, provides mechanisms that enable systems to plug together to form an impromptu community. This practice report demonstrates how Jini can be applied in an industrial environment, or more exactly how it can be used in the integration of embedded devices on-board trains in the back-office IT infrastructure of railway operators. We present two use cases: the first is about an on-board service that allows for remote access to an on-board diagnosis database; the second is about automatically installing new services on-board trains. The results are encouraging and prove that Jini is the appropriate technology to link application servers and service gateways in embedded servers.

We describe the design and implementation of automated methodologies and tools that facilitate the implementation of an enhanced maintenance process in order to provide improved quality of service offered to the customers for the transaction access services (TAS) network. The emphasis of our work is placed on the identification, filtering and correlation of event occurrences that indicate problems that do not necessarily generate alarmed conditions on the conventional network management systems, and on the proactive service/fault management and detection based on dynamically defined violations of the base-lined performance profiles. Such an approach enhances considerably the network management and maintenance process, by identifying possible situations/incidents that may affect the network performance, and by correlating those incidents to the potentially affected elements, services and customer applications.

Efficient data storage, a major concern in the modern computer industry, is mostly provided today by traditional magnetic disks. However, the cost of a disk transfer (measured in processor cycles) continues to increase with time, making disk accesses increasingly expensive. In this paper we describe the design, implementation and evaluation of a Network RamDisk device that uses main memory of remote workstations as a faster‐than‐disk storage device. In our study we propose various reliability policies, making the device tolerant to single workstation crashes. We show that the Network RamDisk is portable, flexible, and can operate under any of the existing Unix file systems. The Network RamDisk has been implemented both on the Linux and the Digital Unix operating systems, as a block device driver without any modifications to the kernel code. Using several real applications and benchmarks, we measure the performance of the Network RamDisk over an Ethernet and an ATM network, and find it to be usually four to eight times better than the magnetic disk. In one benchmark, our system was two orders of magnitude faster than the disk. We believe that a Network RamDisk can be efficiently used to provide reliable low‐latency access to files that would otherwise be stored on magnetic disks.

Detecting global predicates in distributed program executions is a useful tool for debugging and testing. A new form of global predicates, called exclusive global predicates, is considered in this paper to provide a natural and efficient way to describe mutual exclusion conditions. One exclusive global predicate is enough to express mutual exclusion condition for n local predicates, one for each process; the O(n/sup 2/) conjunctive global predicates are required to describe the same condition. In this paper, a local on-line detection algorithm of exclusive global predicates is presented with formal proof. This algorithm detects a violation of mutual exclusion during the execution at each local process. This algorithm uses timestamps to get dependence relations between events. The n+2 numbers are piggybacked to each message, and no extra communication overhead for control information is required. This allows the proposed model to be useful and efficient for testing and debugging of distributed programs compared to the previous method with conjunctive global predicates.

Here we introduce a method for inspection of contamination and plating quality of lead frame. The basic method of segmentation of interested lead surface into five classes is discussed based on the samples supplied from IC manufacturing company. Learning the influence of additive noise and channel distortions from training data is an effective approach for robust speech recognition. We have proposed a novel method of discriminative learning of environmental features according to minimum classification error (MCE) criterion in previous work, in which additive noise is expressed by the weighted combination of multiple types of noises, and the channel distortions are assumed to consist of the channel distortions of the whole training data and the current utterance. In this paper, we use a Gaussian distribution to stand for the distribution of additive noise, and adaptively learn the combination factors of the channel distortions. The current method is proven better than the former one by experiments.
