This paper proposes the simple and efficient image retrieval algorithm using subregional texture features. In order to retrieve images in terms of its contents, it is required to obtain a precise segmentation. However, it is very difficult and takes a long computing time. Therefore, this paper proposes a simple segmentation method, which is to divide an image into high and low entropy regions by using picture information measure (PIM). Also, in order to describe texture characteristics of each region, this paper suggests six different texture features produced on the basis of co-occurrence matrix. For an image retrieval system, a normalised correlation is adopted as a similarity function, which is not dependent on the range of each texture feature values. Finally, this proposed algorithm is applied to various images and produces competitive results.

Since multimedia data is widely used in many fields, research is needed on how to search that data. As a method of retrieving multimedia data, especially for image data, content based image retrieval (CBIR) systems have obtained lots of interest. In order to develop CBIR systems, many different properties of an image have been considered for methods of retrieving image data such as colour, texture, shape, etc. The paper proposes a simple and efficient image retrieval algorithm, which retrieves images on the basis of subregional texture characteristics. In order to retrieve images in terms of contents, it is in general required to obtain a precise segmentation. However, it is very difficult and takes a lot of computing time for precise segmentation. Therefore, the proposed algorithm subdivides an image in terms of a certain sized windows, and finds out whether an image contains a query pattern on the basis texture features. Also, these texture features are described by only six different texture features produced from a co-occurrence matrix. For an image retrieval system, a normalised correlation is adopted as a similarity function, which is not dependent on the range of texture feature values. Finally, the proposed algorithm is applied to various images and produces competitive results.

We believe in terms of information service systems that one of the best ways to develop a large scale database service system is to integrate the service capability of the Web and the data management facility of database systems in a compliment and fashion. In such integration a database gateway is the core component; the database gateway accesses database systems to serve the requests represented by using the Web technology. BADA-III/Web is a gateway that integrates the service capability of the Web and an OODBMS called BADA-III in a complementary manner. We describe our design and implementation experience in integrating the Web and BADA-III, and also explore the effects of BADA-III/Web with some synthetic queries.

software reuse has recently been considered the best solution to enhance the productivity of a software development team and to reduce maintenance costs. In addition, software configuration management (SCM) is a central part of software maintenance as it is associated with changing existing software, and is a discipline for controlling these changes and improving the maintenance process, thereby enhancing the quality of a software product. Thus, both software reuse and SCM have been proposed for making a significant improvement in productivity, quality and cost. However, so far these two technologies have been investigated separately. In order for software reuse and SCM to produce effects by synergy, both approaches require to be introduced into a maintenance environment together. Since software reuse and SCM, and software reuse and software maintenance have many similarities and relationships in their activities, these disciplines can be integrated within a software maintenance environment. The authors have therefore developed an integrated process model for maintenance with reuse (MwR) that supports SCM for a reuse library which is actively maintained for use in a maintenance environment. In this paper the MwR model and its prototype are described, followed by evaluation using a case study and conclusions.

In this paper we present an improved hard acknowledgement deadline protocol in real-time remote procedure call (RT-RPC). Current RT-RPC protocol asks services and waits until the deadline of result. M. Dao and Kwei-Jay Lin (1991) extended RT-RPC by adding hard acknowledgement deadline and got considerable result, to give more time to client recovering error etc. We improved that hard acknowledgement deadline by sending cancel message to the server at acknowledgement deadline when the client did not receive any message from the server by acknowledgement deadline. Upon receiving the cancel message the server kills the current request and executes next message. This scheme will give the client more time to handle requests and the server can do more requests in a given time. To show the effectiveness (more throughput in server) of our protocol we also include our simulation analysis.

The suffix array is a string-indexing structure and a memory efficient alternative to the suffix tree. It has many advantages for text processing. We propose an efficient algorithm for sorting suffixes. We call this algorithm the two-stage suffix sort. One of our ideas is to exploit the specific relationships between adjacent suffixes. Our algorithm makes it possible to use the suffix array for much larger texts and suggests new areas of application. Our experiments on several text data sets (including 514-MB Japanese newspapers) demonstrate that our algorithm is 4.5 to 6.9 times faster than Quicksort, and 2.5 to 3.6 times faster than K. Sadakane's (1998) algorithm, which is considered to be the fastest algorithm in previous work.

This paper proposes to use a logical hypercube structure for detecting message stability in distributed systems. In particular, a stability detection protocol that uses such a superimposed logical structure is presented, and its scalability is compared with other known stability detection protocols. The main benefits of the logical hypercube approach are scalability, fault-tolerance, and refraining from overloading a single node or link in the system. These benefits become evident both by an analytical comparison and by simulations. Another important feature of the logical hypercube approach is that the performance of the protocol is in general not sensitive to the topology of the underlying physical network.

In this paper we propose an efficient concurrency control algorithm based on the link technique of R/sup Link/-Tree for high-dimensional index structures. Unlike the R/sup Link/-Tree concurrency control algorithm, it does not employ lock-coupling while ascending the index trees to process node splits and MBR (minimum bounding region) updates. Additionally, the algorithm provides the concurrency control mechanisms for forced reinsertion operations that are used to improve search performance in multi-dimensional index trees. We show through experiments that our proposed method outperforms the existing R/sup Link/-Tree algorithm.

Popular methods for extracting a text region in video images are in general based on analysis of a whole image such as merge and split method, and comparison of two frames. Thus, they take long computing time due to the use of a whole image. Therefore, this paper suggests the faster method of extracting a text region without processing a whole image. The proposed method uses line sampling methods, FFT and neural networks in order to extract texts in real time. In general, text areas are found in the higher frequency domain, thus, can be characterized using FFT. The candidate text areas can be thus found by applying the higher frequency characteristics to neural network. Therefore, the final text area is extracted by verifying the candidate areas. Experimental results show a perfect candidate extraction rate and about 92% text extraction rate. The strength of the proposed algorithm is its simplicity, real-time processing by not processing the entire image, and fast skipping of the images that do not contain a text.

Conventional caption extraction approaches often use a spatial variance method or a color reduction method such as color histogram and color quantization. These methods are time-consuming and restrict the colors for extracting captions. In this paper we propose a method that extracts caption areas using TFs (topographical features) and isodata color clustering. After extracting TFs points using the topographical characteristics of characters, the isodata clustering method is used to cluster the similar colors. The point-line-region method is used to construct the blocks for each of the clustered groups. Constructed blocks are verified and candidate areas are decided. Caption regions are determined by testing several conditions and verifying those candidate areas. Experimental results show that the candidate region extraction rate is 100%, and the character region extraction rate is 98%.
