An investigative tool for the direct study of end-to-end Internet traffic is presented, featuring a hybrid timing mechanism allowing high resolution time-stamping of packet departures in a UNIX environment. A method for the elimination of timing artifacts due to variations in clock rates, essential for the study of delay, is also presented. A preliminary report is gives on the detailed structure of end-to-end delay and loss processes using the tool. A number of consistent properties of interest are found including long range dependence in delay and a very simple structure for loss.

Multidatabase systems (MDBSs) are an integration of local database systems into a global distributed database system. The objectives of global transaction management are to avoid inconsistent retrieval and to guarantee the global serializability under the existence of indirect conflict which is unknown to the global transaction manager (GTM). research has shown that it is difficult to design the global concurrency control method because of local autonomy. Hence, we adopt the characteristics of global integrity constraints so that inconsistent global schedules can be prohibited and the higher degree of concurrency can be achieved. We propose the transaction model for maintaining the global integrity constraints and define the stable global transaction that cannot have any indirect conflict between global transactions. We also propose the optimistic concurrency control method to guarantee the global serializability and logical consistency.

Framework is a template for a working program since framework consists of related classes and wired-in interactions among those classes. Reuse by framework is a promising way for improving the productivity and reducing the learning curve of a new domain. So far, many efforts for developing the frameworks have been started and a few real frameworks like CIM framework and domain frameworks were announced. We describe a project for developing a framework in PDM (Product Data Management) domain. PDM can be applied to several application domains, but there are some small differences in each application. Developing the framework is not easy. We discuss the current state and results of our project: 1) the phases of developing our framework, 2) applying design patterns, 3) support environments for customizing the framework, 4) the problems in developing a framework.

The ATM service category UBR is intended for non-real-time applications that do not require guaranteed QoS commitments. With additional, relatively inexpensive control functions such as packet discard schemes, UBR could become a cost-effective alternative for the transmission of data traffic; offering a straightforward and flexible solution as opposed to nrt-VBR and GFR that applies stricter traffic specifications as well as ABR with its sophisticated and complex rate-control protocol. This paper presents the results obtained from a comprehensive set of experiments with TCP over UBR, comprising of measurements taken on different protocol layers. The goal is to experimentally investigate the performance of UBR to carry TCP traffic, to evaluate the performance gain achievable by packet discard schemes and TCP parameter tuning, to study the influence of the TCP implementation, and in a final step, to relate the measurements to simulation results.

The paper is concerned with those properties of software that can be statically surmised from the source code. Many such properties have been extensively studied from the perspective of compiler construction technology. However, live variable analysis, alias analysis and the such are too low level to be of interest to the software engineer. The authors identify a family of statically checkable properties that should represent a higher level abstraction, and reach the detailed design level. Properties in this family which is defined by five precise distinguishing criteria are called traits. Some examples of traits include mutability, const correctness, ownership, and pure functions. In fact, in many ways, traits are non-standard types. They argue that traits should bring about similar benefits to these of static typing in terms of clarity, understandability, adherence to design decisions, and robustness. They further argue that traits can be used for better checking of substitutability in inheritance relationships. Having made the case for traits, they proceed to describing a taxonomy for classifying and understanding traits and show how it can be used to better understand previous work on this topic. The paper also discusses the abstract computational complexity of traits and compares previous research from that perspective.

This paper describes an application model and software technology that makes it possible to run World Wide Web applications in wide area wireless networks. Web technology in conjunction with today's mobile devices (e.g., laptops, notebooks, personal digital assistants) and the emerging wireless technologies (e.g., digital cellular, packet radio, CDPD) offer the potential for unprecedented access to data and applications by mobile workers. Yet, the limited bandwidth, high latency, high cost, and poor reliability of today's wireless wide-area networks greatly inhibits (to the point of infeasibility) supporting such applications over wireless networks. This paper presents the Client/Intercept computational model that makes it possible to run such distributed applications efficiently in wide area wireless networks. Furthermore, it presents WebExpress, a client/intercept based system for optimizing Web browsing, that reduces data volume and latency of wireless communications by intercepting the HTTP data stream and performing various optimizations including: file caching, forms differencing, protocol reduction, and the elimination of redundant HTTP header transmission. This paper describes these optimizations and presents some experimental results.

This document1 contains definitions of a wide range of concepts specific to and widely used within temporal databases. In addition to providing definitions, the document also includes explanations of concepts as well as discussions of the adopted names. The consensus effort that lead to this glossary was initiated in Early 1992. Earlier versions appeared in SIGMOD Record in September 1992 and March 1994. The present glossary subsumes all the previous documents. The glossary meets the need for creating a higher degree of consensus on the definition and naming of temporal database concepts. Two sets of criteria are included. First, all included concepts were required to satisfy four relevance criteria, and, second, the naming of the concepts was resolved using a set of evaluation criteria. The concepts are grouped into three categories: concepts of general database interest, of temporal database interest, and of specialized interest. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

Ship design is often multidisciplinary involving several design elements with various types of objectives and constraints (O/C) some easily described as mathematical formulas, others better modeled as descriptive assertions. This paper describes a method based on fuzzy functions and an integrated performance index to model O/C using descriptive assertions to be used with mathematical formulas in optimization. Another issue addressed in this paper concerns the coordination of design elements when sequentially coupled, that is, when one leads the other and the performance of the follower depends greatly on the design of the leader. Based on neuro-fuzzy techniques, the method described here coordinates and optimizes sequentially coupled elements. The two methods are applied to machinery arrangement (MA) and pipe routing (PR). Preliminary models for optimization of MA and PR are described considering convenience, producibility: engine room size, interference and location as factors in the O/C set. Some test results from MA/PR applications are presented and discussed. The methods are generic and can be extended to other elements in ship design. They are mutually independent and may be used separately Two advantages of their use are an improvement in overall performance and a reduction in the need for redesign of elements.

Simulation of traffic-induced air pollution for mesoscale applications

Recent investigations have shown that vehicular traffic is the main source for emissions leading to summer smog. A study of the impact of traffic emission on urban air quality requires a complex air-pollution simulation system. This paper presents results of the development and application of an air-pollution simulation system at GMD FIRST which aims at supporting users in government administration and industry with forecasting and operative decision-making as well as short- to long-term regional planning. The components of the simulation system are parallelly implemented simulation models for meteorology, transport and air chemistry, data bases for model input and simulation results, as well as a graphic user interface for spatial data visualization. In order to study the influence of traffic emissions, a traffic-flow and a traffic-emission model have been added to the simulation system. Results presented are from two recent applications in the regions of Berlin/Brandenburg and Munich (Germany). Further applications are in preparation.
