Outgrowth of the development of distributed computer environment has caused local resources to be connected and shared by means of networks. A user can utilize far much efficiently way through the networks. Without effective network management, a user can not user them efficiently. It will lead to inefficient computing work. Currently, SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) and CMIP (Common Management Information Protocol) are defined as management protocols. Both of them employ Manager-Agent model. The paper suggests a reliable distributed network management platform which can manage TCP/IP network with SNMP and OSI network with CMIP in an integrated manner. Based on the new platform, it designs and implements configuration management, performance management, and fault management. The new platform aims to reduce network traffic and system workload which have been concentrically loaded on a manager in the traditional Manager-Agent model. Also, the new platform improved fault tolerance capability. The platform, using management distributor, provides network administrator with independence of low-level management protocol.

We consider an extended committee coordination problem in an autonomous decentralized social environment. The basic committee coordination problem and a distributed algorithm, as a solution to this problem in a distributed environment, are presented by K.M. Chandy and J. Misra (1988). The algorithm guarantees the synchronous and exclusion properties of the problem and is fair (i.e. starvation-free) and makes progress (i.e. deadlock-free). In an autonomous decentralized social environment, besides the above mentioned properties, some social properties, such as individual preference, privacy protection, and stable assignment, are required to be considered and guaranteed. We extend the committee coordination problem by introducing some social properties, such as individual preference and stable assignment and give a decentralized social algorithm as a solution to this extended problem. The algorithm guarantees not only the synchronous and exclusion properties but also individual preference and stable assignment properties.< >

He is currently an associate professor of Computer Science at the Institute of Graduate Studies & Research University of Alexandria. His research interests are in data communications and multimedia applications computer networks image processing and pattern recognition. Abdel-Latif A. Abdel-Bary:obtained the BEng degree in Electronics Technology from Arab Maritime Transport Academy in 1986. In 1995 he obtained the MSc degree in Information Technology from the Institute of Graduate Studies & Research Alexandria University. His current research interests include ICAL hypermedia and automatic programming.

In this article a multimedia computer-assisted learning (MCAL) system is presented. The major objective of this work was to investigate the potential of using such systems as tools for transferring instructional course information through various types of computer media as opposed to the classic CAL systems. The philosophy and techniques employed to design the system are investigated. Usage of the implemented system and its merits have been illustrated through its application to teach engineering students and technicians the theory and concepts of marine radar. System design, implementation, test, and revision phases are presented and discussed.

An implementation method is proposed for parallel production systems on multicomputers, or message-passing computers, to speed up execution time. There have been proposed parallel production systems using hash mechanism, but they cause a skewed load distribution problem. To obtain more efficient balance of load, the method addressed here and named clustered parallel production systems (CPPS) adopts two load balancing strategies: hash and demand-driven. Taking account of the cost of termination detection, the execution time of the CPPS and simple hash method are estimated, and implement on an nCube2. The estimation meets the execution results. The CPPS provides much better load balance to improve scalability.

Describes the FAST concurrent engineering (CE) implementationmethodology that has been developed by the authors at CranfieldUniversity, through research and consultancy activities. He specialized in the development of electromagnetic engineering CAD software and successfully implemented a number of electromagnetic wave simulators based on the two-dimensional and three-dimensional transmission-line matrix methods. From August 1990 to February 1991 he accompanied Professor W. J. R. Hoefer to Rome Italy and Sophia Antiopolas France. During that time he implemented a parallel version of the 3D-TLM simulator for the CM-2 Connection Machine using C-Star and X Windows Library. He is a research engineer and a Ph.D. student at the University of Victoria Victoria British Columbia Canada. He ported the 2D- and 3D-TLM simulators to DECmpp 1200 massively parallel computer using MPL C and C++. He also combined OSA90/hope a commercially available microwave CAD program with a 2D-TLM simulation module for geometry optimization using the Datapipe technique of OSA90/hope. This paper describes the implementation of transmission-line matrix (TLM) method algorithms on a massively parallel computer (DECmpp 12000), the technique of distributed computing in the UNIX environment, and the combination of TLM analysis with Prony's method as well as with autoregressive moving average (ARMA) digital signal processing for electromagnetic field modelling. By combining these advanced computation techniques, typical electromagnetic field modelling of microwave structures by TLM analysis can be accelerated by a few orders of magnitude.

ISDN LOOP EXTENSION USING A MID-SPAN AMPLIFIER

作者： ERKER, GJ DODDS, DE KRZYMIEN, WA David E. Dodds was born in Saskatoon Canada in 1945. He received the B. Eng. and MSc. degrees from the University of Saskatchewan in 1966 and 1968 respectively. He worked with Bell Northern Research (Ottawa) on PBX design in 1969 1972 and 1978. Since 1969 he has been with the University of Saskatchewan where he is currently Professor of Electrical Engineering. He teaches courses in electronics and communications and also presents short courses on the fundamentals of telephony. Current research interests are in data transmission signal processing architecture and frame synchronization for PCM and spread spectrum systems. He has been granted five patents relating to commercial products in delta-modulation telephone line interfacing and computer data transmission. In 1986 he was on sabbatical leave at BNR Inc. and worked with an ANSI committee on the standardization of FDDI-II a combined voice and data system. Mr. Dodds is a Registered Consulting Engineer in Saskatchewan. Witold A. Krzyden received his MSc. (Eng.) and Ph.D. degrees (both in Electrical Engineering) in 1970 and 1978 respectively from the Poznan Technical University in Poznan Poland. He was awarded the Minister's of Science and Technology Prize of Excellence for his Ph.D. thesis. From 1970 to 1978 he was a Research Engineer and Teaching Assistant and then from 1978 to 1980 an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Poznan Technical University. In 1980 he won a Dutch Government Research Fellowship at the Twente University of Technology in Enschede the Netherlands for the year of 1980/1981. In the following year of 1981/82 he was a Research Assistant Professor there. From 1982 to 1986 he was an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay Ontario Canada. The 5.5 km range of the basic rate ISDN loop has been extended by using a negative impedance amplifier and by using a 2 wire/4 wire (2w/4w) amplifier. The negative impedance amplifier extends the range of the loop by 1.0 km, whereas the 2w/4w amplifier extends the range by 1.5 km at the expense of increased complexity. As part of the amplifer design, a resistor/capacitor network has been developed which closely matches the characteristic impedance of telephone cable. Error rate tests have been conducted using various lengths of cable and an operating ISDN line.

This paper demonstrates the use of an integrated toolset for program understanding. By leveraging the unique capabilities of individual tools, and exploiting their power in combination, the resultant toolset is able to facilitate specific reverse engineering tasks that would otherwise be difficult or impossible. This is illustrated by applying the integrated toolset to several typical reverse engineering scenarios, including code localization, data flow analysis, pattern matching, system clustering, and visualization, using a mid-size production program as the reference system.

THE SUPRENUM SUPERcomputer - GOALS, ACHIEVEMENTS, AND LESSONS LEARNED

SUPRENUM is a highly parallel supercomputer for numerical applications. The 5-GFLOPS peak performance of the 256-node system made it the most powerful MIMD architecture of the 'first generation.' Each node is a complete, single-board vector machine with 20 Mflops peak performance (IEEE double precision). SUPRENUM is a distributed memory architecture, resulting in a highly scalable system that can be made fault-tolerant. Message passing is accelerated by dedicated communication hardware in each node. Array access is performed by an 'intelligent' DMA address generator. The SUPRENUM architecture was the first to be based on two-level interconnection structure, consisting of a number of clusters with each cluster consisting of a number of nodes. At the cluster level the nodes are interconnected by two very fast parallel buses. At the system level the clusters are interconnected by a torus structure consisting of serial ring buses. The nodes run under the proprietary, distributed PEACE operating system. Significant efforts were undertaken to make the system programmable, by providing a host of software tools, libraries, and application software packages. The paper discusses the rationale for the SUPRENUM architecture, the goals achieved, and the lessons learned.

The paper presents a taxonomy of the existing forms of parallel computer architectures, based on the characteristics of the hardware architecture and the abstract machine layered upon it. The abstract machine reflects the programming models provided. The main classes of hardware architectures are: physically shared memory systems and distributed memory systems. Distributed memory systems may be remote memory access architectures or message passing architectures. The major forms of abstract machine architecture are: message passing systems and logically shared memory architectures. Three solutions for logically shared memory architectures are known (1) distributed shared memory architectures, (2) multi-threaded architectures, and (3) virtual shared memory architectures. All three types are discussed in detail under the aspects of performance, programmability, and scalability, and their corresponding programming paradigms are characterized. The implications of the three concepts on node architecture and the requirements of latency minimization or latency hiding are discussed and illustrated by examples taken from pioneering realizations of the three kinds of architecture such as DASH, *T, and MANNA.
