Parallel image compression on a workstation-cluster is discussed. We introduce a parallel meta-algorithm for image compression which is well suited for every block based image compression scheme. This algorithm is explained in more detail in the case of fractal image compression. We present experimental results of a host/node implementation on a FDDI interconnected workstationcluster using PVM. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.

Two systematic search methods are employed to find multipliers for linear congruential pseudo-random number generation which are optimal with respect to the discrepancy of pairs of successive pseudo-random numbers. These two methods are compared in terms of their suitability for parallel computation. Experimental results of a MIMD workstationcluster-implementation and an evaluation of the calculated parameters using the spectral-test are included. © 9 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.

New methods for compact image coding based on generalized wavelet decompositions have been introduced recently. Unlike in the classical wavelet decomposition scheme it is possible to use different scaling and wavelet functions at every scale by using non-stationary multiresolution analyses. In this work we introduce parallel algorithms (suitable for MIMD architectures) that excel the execution speed for this type of lossy compression algorithms by far. © 1996, Springer Verlag. In this paper parallel algorithms for fractal image compression on MIMD architectures are introduced, classified, and discussed. The crucial point for the choice of a suitable parallelization strategy is the memory capacity of a processor element of the target architecture, therefore the classification follows the memory demand of the algorithms. We present experimental results of all main-representatives of the different algorithm classes. The results show a decreasing speedup for increasing memory demand for most of the proposed algorithms.

The paper deals with the scheduling problem relevant in many fields, such as project management, lesson scheduling or production scheduling. We propose to implement a hierarchical problem structure that puts the travelling salesman problem at the top and replaces the nested resource-constrained project scheduling problem with a simulation model. The paper considers using adaptive parameters control method for Ant Colony Optimization. The performance comparison with such algorithms as Lin-Kernighan heuristic, Genetic Algorithm and Intelligent Water Drops Algorithm is made and competitive results are demonstrated. © 2019 IEEE.

This paper addresses a real-world Integrated Operating Room Planning and Scheduling (IORPS) problem encountered by a local hospital in Naples, characterized by stringent emergency management constraints, requiring treatment initiation within a 20-minute time-window. We tackle this problem by an original Integer Linear Programming formulation, capable of dealing with different operating room management strategies (open, block and block-modified). Our work differs from conventional cost-focused models by adopting a patient-oriented objective function, aligning with public hospitals obligations. The proposed method has been validated using real-world data provided by the hospital. The performed experimentation demonstrates the efficiency of the approach, capable of determining the optimal solution within an acceptable computation time that aligns with hospital requirements. Moreover, it also highlights the relevance of using our optimization approach to reduce delays in emergency responsiveness. This confirms its practical usage as a substitute for the current manual procedure. © The Author(s) 2024.

In recent years, it has become a focus to make use of the address recognition technology to improve the performance of mail sorting machines. The research in the postal address recognition, which extends the context relation from words to sentences with the use of the address information in post-processing, can effectively improve the recognition performance. In this paper, we propose a divide-and-rule method. The address is divided into high level address and low level address. For high level address, the similarity method with HLA database is presented. For low level address, the Syllable-based language model which applies to Pinyin is discussed. Then a new similarity method in multi-mode is introduced. After post-processing, for high level address, the hit rate rises from 87.63% to 95.12% while the accuracy rate declines by 2.67%, and for low level address, the hit rate increases from 58.16% to 91.81% while the accuracy rate decreases by 9.40%. © 2011 IEEE.

Takeo Yaku et al proposed octal degree heterogeneous grid graphs, called octgrids[4, 6], that represent heterogeneous rectangular dissections such as spreadsheet. Meanwhile, because octgrid is very complex, it would be difficult to create octgrid application systems if you manipulate the octgrid directly. Therefore, we represent octgrid by an XML notation, and represent the octgrid on an SQL database system by storing each node of octgrid in SQL table. It will be easier to manipulate the octgrid because you can manipulate it by SQL commands. In this paper, we deal with editing for spreadsheet based on octgrids and SQL database system. The secondary system is very important for the reliable power supply and safe production of the power system. It includes secondary equipment and secondary circuits. The connection status of the secondary circuits will directly affect the correct operation of protection and automation devices. To solve these devices misoperation and refuse to operate problems caused by the multipoint grounding of PT and CT secondary circuits in substations, this paper proposes an online monitoring system for the insulation status of secondary circuits based on distributed zero sequence current sampling method. This system could greatly reduce the workload of maintenance on the secondary circuits, improves operation efficiency, and ensures the reliable operation of the secondary circuit in substations. © 2024 IEEE.
