Cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF mMIMO) systems serve the user equipments (UEs) by geographically distributed access points (APs) by means of joint transmission and reception. To limit the power consumption due to fronthaul signaling and processing, each UE should only be served by a subset of the APs, but it is hard to identify that subset. Previous works have tackled this combinatorial problem heuristically. In this paper, we propose a sparse distributed processing design for CF mMIMO, where the AP-UE association and long-term signal processing coefficients are jointly optimized. We formulate two sparsity-inducing mean-squared error (MSE) minimization problems and solve them by using efficient proximal approaches with block-coordinate descent. For the downlink, more specifically, we develop a virtually optimized large-scale fading precoding (V-LSFP) scheme using uplink-downlink duality. The numerical results show that the proposed sparse processing schemes work well in both uplink and downlink. In particular, they achieve almost the same spectral efficiency as if all APs would serve all UEs, while the energy efficiency is 2-4 times higher thanks to the reduced processing and signaling. The advent of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies and the reduction of sequencing costs, characterized the last decades by a massive production of experimental data. These data cover a wide range of biological experiments derived from several sequencing strategies, producing a big amount of heterogeneous data. They are often linked to a set of related metadata that are essential to describe experiments and the analyzed samples, with also information about patients from which samples have been collected. Nowadays, browsing all these data and retrieving significant insights from them is a big challenge that has been already faced with different techniques in order to facilitate their accessibility and interoperability. In this work, we focus on genomic data of cancer and related metadata exploiting domain-specific ontologies in order to allow executing taxonomy-based relaxed queries. In particular, we apply the upward and downward query extension methods to obtain a finer or coarser granularity of the requested information. We define diverse use cases with which a user can perform a query specifying particular attributes related to metadata or genomic data, even if they are not available in the considered repository. Thus, we are able to extract the requested data through the use of domain-specific ontologies of The Open Biological and Biomedical Ontology (OBO) Foundry. Finally, we propose a new ontological software layer, which allows users to interact with experimental data and metadata without knowledge about their representation schema. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

In FEM-based EEG and MEG source analysis, the subtraction approach has been proposed to simulate sensor measurements generated by neural activity. While this approach possesses a rigorous foundation and produces accurate results, its major downside is that it is computationally prohibitively expensive in practical applications. To overcome this, we developed a new approach, called the localized subtraction approach. This approach is designed to preserve the mathematical foundation of the subtraction approach, while also leading to sparse right-hand sides in the FEM formulation, making it efficiently computable. We achieve this by introducing a cut-off into the subtraction, restricting its influence to the immediate neighborhood of the source. In this work, this approach will be presented, analyzed, and compared to other state-of-the-art FEM right-hand side approaches. Furthermore, we discuss how to arrive at an efficient and stable implementation. We perform validation in multi-layer sphere models where analytical solutions exist. There, we demonstrate that the localized subtraction approach is vastly more efficient than the subtraction approach. Moreover, we find that for the EEG forward problem, the localized subtraction approach is less dependent on the global structure of the FEM mesh, while the subtraction approach is sensitive to the mesh structure even at a distance to the source. Additionally, we show the localized subtraction approach to rival, and in many cases even surpass, the other investigated approaches in terms of accuracy. Especially for the MEG forward problem, where Biot-Savart’s law is employed, we show the localized subtraction approach and the subtraction approach to produce highly accurate approximations of the volume currents close to the source. The localized subtraction approach thus reduces the computational cost of the subtraction approach to an extent that makes it usable in practical applications without sacrificing the rigorousness and

Spreading dynamics and complex contagion processes on networks are important mechanisms underlying the emergence of critical transitions, tipping points and other nonlinear phenomena in complex human and natural systems. Increasing amounts of temporal network data are now becoming available to study such spreading processes of behaviours, opinions, ideas, diseases and innovations to test hypotheses regarding their specific properties. To this end, we here present a methodology based on dose-response functions and hypothesis testing using surrogate data models that randomise most aspects of the empirical data while conserving certain structures relevant to contagion, group or homophily dynamics. We demonstrate this methodology for synthetic temporal network data of spreading processes generated by the adaptive voter model. Furthermore, we apply it to empirical temporal network data from the Copenhagen Networks Study. This data set provides a physically-close-contact network between several hundreds of university students participating in the study over the course of three months. We study the potential spreading dynamics of the health-related behaviour "regularly going to the fitness studio" on this network. Based on a hierarchy of surrogate data models, we find that our method neither provides significant evidence for an influence of a dose-response-type network spreading process in this data set, nor significant evidence for homophily. The empirical dynamics in exercise behaviour are likely better described by individual features such as the disposition towards the behaviour, and the persistence to maintain it, as well as external influences affecting the whole group, and the non-trivial network structure. Energy system models underpin decisions by energy system planners and operators. Energy system modelling faces a transformation: accounting for changing meteorological conditions imposed by climate change. To enable that transformation, a community of practice in energy-climate modelling has started to form that aims to better integrate energy system models with weather and climate models. Here, we evaluate the disconnects between the energy system and climate modelling communities, then lay out a research agenda to bridge those disconnects. In the near-term, we propose interdisciplinary activities for expediting uptake of future climate data in energy system modelling. In the long-term, we propose a transdisciplinary approach to enable development of (1) energy-system-tailored climate datasets for historical and future meteorological conditions and (2) energy system models that can effectively leverage those datasets. This agenda increases the odds of meeting ambitious climate mitigation goals by systematically capturing and mitigating climate risk in energy sector decision making. © 2022, CC BY-NC-ND.

Spectral measurements provide valuable information on the electronic states and crystal structures of materials. In particular, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) can facilitate analysis of the chemical bond state of material surfaces. In the analysis of XPS spectra, the spectrum to be measured is typically compared to a reference spectrum measured on a known single-phase sample. Therefore, establishing a reference spectral database is imperative. In this study, round-robin tests of XPS spectra are performed with the aim of obtaining recommended XPS reference spectra and experimental procedures, including preprocessing. Determining the variations in peak structures between instrument- and sample-derived spectral shapes, and quantitatively discussing them in round-robin tests of XPS spectra are challenging. Therefore, an analysis method that automatically determines the above mentioned variations and extracts the samplederived common spectral structures is developed. Recently, biometric technology has been extensively embedded in mobile devices to enhance security of mobile devices. With rise of financial technology (FinTech) that employs mobile applications as well as devices as promotional platforms, biometrics has a significant role in strengthening the detection of this privacy application. This manuscript offers the design of salp swarm optimization with auto-encoder based biometric authentication (SSOAE-BMA) model for the recognition of abnormal activities in the Fintech banking applications based on wireless communication. The major aim of the SSOAE-BMA model lies in the proper authentication of persons via biometric matching process. Initially, the presented SSOAE-BMA model makes use of stacked ResNet-50 model for deriving feature vectors. Next, the SSOAE-BMA model utilizes AE for biometric verification and the performance of the AE model is adjusted using the Social Spider Optimization (SSO) Algorithm which in turn enhances the recognition outcomes. To demonstrate the improved performance of SSOAE-BMA model, a series of simulations were carried out. The experimental outcomes signified the enhancements of the SSOAE-BMA model over existing models.
