Quantification and comparison of prediction uncertainty associated with different practices of crop modeling

Crop models are widely used as decision support tools in agriculture and natural resource management. However, the current practices in crop modeling and evaluation vary significantly, making it challenging to compare uncertainties across different models and studies. This study aims to quantify and compare the uncertainties associated with four different crop modeling practices using a standardized evaluation framework. The four modeling practices are: 1) using a single model, considering only model bias for uncertainty; 2) using a single model, accounting for both model bias and parameter uncertainty; 3) employing a multi-model ensemble to account for model bias, parameter uncertainty, and structural uncertainties; and 4) using a multi-model ensemble to consider uncertainties induced by model bias, parameters, structures, and inputs. We developed a framework that integrates Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) and Bayesian Model Averaging (BMA) to consistently quantify prediction uncertainty across these practices. The framework was applied to an Asian rice dataset. The results revealed that common model evaluation approach (Practice 1) tends to underestimate the uncertainty of model predictions. Relying on a single process-based model presents a substantial risk in critical decision-making situations. In contrast, the BMA ensemble predictor ( e-BMA ) demonstrated higher reliability, making it a preferable choice for future decision support. Our Bayesian framework provides a more robust and adaptable approach for project-specific decision-making, with promising applications in digital agriculture.

The increasing complexity of medical device (MD) management software requires the adoption of new methodological approaches that pay particular attention to safety issues. The risk analysis is one of the key activities to be carried out by the manufacturer before the development of the software application as it determines the type of documentation to be provided as well as the activities to be performed to place the MD on the market. After the definition of software requirements and their iterative transformation into architectural items and/or units, the manufacturer defines the safety class of each item. The adoption of an axiomatic design approach facilitates this process. This combination of techniques helps to focus the design of medical device software on non-conformities with a clear link to clinical risk. This objective can be achieved by assessing the complexity of the system to be designed, both in terms of its functional size, and as a level of overall clinical risk. In this multi-dimensional perspective, the software effort expressed in function points provides an estimate of the development cost. While the clinical risk analysis allows to quickly identify critical areas, to intervene with the same promptness and to draft a management plan according to the regulations of the various control authorities. © 2019 The Authors, published by EDP sciences.

Cancer home care is a sector of particular relevance for the Italian health service. The budget ceilings imposed by public finance pose the need to reduce hospitalisation costs, moving patients from treatment to home care as much as possible. This is especially true in the field of pediatric oncology, where a protected family environment offers a variety of benefits to young patients and their families. However, in order to guarantee adequate assistance services, an integrated information system for management must be devised as the center of gravity of a coordinated network of, even heterogeneous, actors. This paper focuses on the identification and evolving development of web services for regulation and control of home administration of drug infusion in pediatric oncology. The Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) remains the software architecture of reference, where as the methodological approach is open to a reconsideration of the continuous improvement of the whole process in light of the ceaseless progress of medical science and information technology. In this paper, his goal is achieved by using a methodological design approach that combines the UML modeling based on Case Stories and the process optimization of Axiomatic Design. Case Stories allow the formalization of end users' requirements in UML language, easily interpreted by software developers. On the other hand, Axiomatic Design allows optimizing the design process by identifying the most robust solutions in terms of greater logical coherence and lesser systemic complexity. We analyze a case study focused on the design of web services supporting the home administration of drug infusion, for young cancer patients in home care. Then, we show how the UML-modeling methodology can be used to design new services on the basis of specific Use Cases. Finally, through theAxiomatic design approach we verify the proposed solutions, by identifying the robust set of web services to be implemented. © 2019 The Authors,

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted gaps in health surveillance systems, disease prevention, and treatment globally. Among the many factors that might have led to these gaps is the issue of the financing of national health systems, especially in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), as well as a robust global system for pandemic preparedness. We aimed to provide a comparative assessment of global health spending at the onset of the pandemic;characterise the amount of development assistance for pandemic preparedness and response disbursed in the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic;and examine expectations for future health spending and put into context the expected need for investment in pandemic preparedness. Methods: In this analysis of global health spending between 1990 and 2021, and prediction from 2021 to 2026, we estimated four sources of health spending: development assistance for health (DAH), government spending, out-of-pocket spending, and prepaid private spending across 204 countries and territories. We used the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)'s Creditor Reporting system (CRS) and the WHO Global Health Expenditure Database (GHED) to estimate spending. We estimated development assistance for general health, COVID-19 response, and pandemic preparedness and response using a keyword search. Health spending estimates were combined with estimates of resources needed for pandemic prevention and preparedness to analyse future health spending patterns, relative to need. Findings: In 2019, at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, US$9·2 trillion (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 9·1–9·3) was spent on health worldwide. We found great disparities in the amount of resources devoted to health, with high-income countries spending $7·3 trillion (95% UI 7·2–7·4) in 2019;293·7 times the $24·8 billion (95% UI 24·3–25·3) spent by low-income countries in 2019. Background: In an era of shifting global agendas and expanded emphasis on non-communicable diseases and injuries along with communicable diseases, sound evidence on trends by cause at the national level is essential. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) provides a systematic scientific assessment of published, publicly available, and contributed data on incidence, prevalence, and mortality for a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive list of diseases and injuries. Methods: GBD estimates incidence, prevalence, mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to 369 diseases and injuries, for two sexes, and for 204 countries and territories. Input data were extracted from censuses, household surveys, civil registration and vital statistics, disease registries, health service use, air pollution monitors, satellite imaging, disease notifications, and other sources. Cause-specific death rates and cause fractions were calculated using the Cause of Death Ensemble model and spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression. Cause-specific deaths were adjusted to match the total all-cause deaths calculated as part of the GBD population, fertility, and mortality estimates. Deaths were multiplied by standard life expectancy at each age to calculate YLLs. A Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2.1, was used to ensure consistency between incidence, prevalence, remission, excess mortality, and cause-specific mortality for most causes. Prevalence estimates were multiplied by disability weights for mutually exclusive sequelae of diseases and injuries to calculate YLDs. We considered results in the context of the Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a composite indicator of income per capita, years of schooling, and fertility rate in females younger than 25 years. matrices, which allows us to perform a linearization process on V (δ ) (Theorem II: Linearization Theorem). It is found that locally for each site j, the internal factor Wj in the transfer matrices can be treated as a boundary factor, which can be dealt with by a procedure similar to the Onsager-Kaufman approach for the boundary factor U in the 2D Ising model. This linearization process splits each sub-transfer matrix into 2n sub-spaces (and the whole system into 2nl sub-spaces). Furthermore, a local transformation is employed on each of the sub-transfer matrices (Theorem III: Local Transformation Theorem). The local transformation trivializes the non-trivial topological structure, while it generalizes the topological phases on the eigenvectors. This is induced by a gauge transformation in the Ising gauge lattice that is dual to the original 3D Ising model. The non-commutation of operators during the processes of linearization and local transformation can be dealt with to be commutative in the framework of the Jordan-von Neumann-Wigner procedure, in which the multiplication Aº B = 12 (AB + BA) in Jordan algebras is applied instead of the usual matrix multiplication AB (Theorem IV: Commutation Theorem).. This can be realized by time-averaging t systems of the 3D Ising models with time evaluation. In order to determine the rotation angle for the local transformation, the star-triangle relationship of the 3D Ising model is employed for Curie temperature, which is the solution of generalized Yang-Baxter equations in the continuous limit. Although machine learning (ML) has shown promise in numerous domains, there are concerns about generalizability to out-of-sample data. This is currently addressed by centrally sharing ample, and importantly diverse, data from multiple sites. However, such centralization is challenging to scale (or even not feasible) due to various limitations. Federated ML (FL) provides an alternative to train accurate and generalizable ML models, by only sharing numerical model updates. Here we present findings from the largest FL study to-date, involving data from 71 healthcare institutions across 6 continents, to generate an automatic tumor boundary detector for the rare disease of glioblastoma, utilizing the largest dataset of such patients ever used in the literature (25,256 MRI scans from 6,314 patients). We demonstrate a 33% improvement over a publicly trained model to delineate the surgically targetable tumor, and 23% improvement over the tumor's entire extent. We anticipate our study to: 1) enable more studies in healthcare informed by large and diverse data, ensuring meaningful results for rare diseases and underrepresented populations, 2) facilitate further quantitative analyses for glioblastoma via performance optimization of our consensus model for eventual public release, and 3) demonstrate the effectiveness of FL at such scale and task complexity as a paradigm shift for multi-site collaborations, alleviating the need for data sharing. © 2022, CC BY.
