Climate change is already leaving a broad footprint of impacts on biodiversity, from an individual caterpillar emerging earlier in spring to dominant plant communities migrating poleward. Despite the various modes of how species are on the move, we primarily document shifting species along only one gradient (e.g., latitude or phenology) and along one dimension (space or time). In this opinion article we present a unifying framework for integrating the study of species on the move over space and time and from micro to macro scales. Future conservation planning and natural resource management will depend on our ability to use this framework to improve understanding, attribution, and prediction of species on the move. © 2025 The Authors

Water scarcity has largely driven the adaptations of organisms to survive dryland conditions. As a result, there are many animal and plant species and habitats found only in drylands: some semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas are among the most biodiverse regions in the world. Despite the value of such biomes, protected areas in drylands are not representative of all the dryland subtypes. For example, deserts are disproportionately represented whilst temperate grasslands have amongst the lowest level of protection of all biomes at approximately 3.4%. Nevertheless, local communities inhabiting drylands have informally conserved large areas as a by-product of sustainable management practices or cultural beliefs. The drylands offer significant opportunities for achieving both conservation and development objectives simultaneously and in many cases have been shown to do so. The Aichi targets (targets established by Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity at the tenth Conference of Parties in 2010) on protected areas could be more easily achieved, or even surpassed, in drylands by legitimising and supporting Indigenous and Community Conserved Areas (ICCAs), and traditional natural resource management strategies. A more nuanced vision of sustainably managed drylands is therefore needed: one that reflects social and ecological realities and provides a framework against which policies and investments can be assessed. Such a vision should be based on the intersection between sustainable land management and biodiversity conservation, which encompasses the following four components: adapting green economic growth to the drylands;conservation and sustainable management of dryland biodiversity;and health as the basis for secure food and water provision;and resilience and risk management in uncertain environments. The difficulty with multidisciplinary research is finding common ground for scientists, whose approach to a particular scientific problem can differ radically. For example, there is agreement between the geophysical community and the food science and technology community that food security is an important issue. However, the climate change community sees possible solutions coming from more detailed studies on the links between climate change and agriculture, whereas the food science community sees possible solutions emerging from studies of food logistics and supply chains.

Temporal Succession of Phytoplankton Assemblages in a Tidal Creek System of the Sundarbans Mangroves: An Integrated Approach

Sundarbans, the world′s largest mangrove ecosystem, is unique and biologically diverse. A study was undertaken to track temporal succession of phytoplankton assemblages at the generic level (≥10 µ m) encompassing 31 weeks of sampling (June 2010–May 2011) in Sundarbans based on microscopy and hydrological measurements. As part of this study, amplification and sequencing of type ID rbc L subunit of RuBisCO enzyme were also applied to infer chromophytic algal groups (≤10 µ m size) from one of the study points. We report the presence of 43 genera of Bacillariophyta, in addition to other phytoplankton groups, based on microscopy. Phytoplankton cell abundance, which was highest in winter and spring, ranged between 300 and 27,500 cells/L during this study. Cell biovolume varied between winter of 2010 (90–35281.04 µ m 3 ) and spring-summer of 2011 (52–33962.24 µ m 3 ). Winter supported large chain forming diatoms, while spring supported small sized diatoms, followed by other algal groups in summer. The clone library approach showed dominance of Bacillariophyta-like sequences, in addition to Cryptophyta-, Haptophyta-, Pelagophyta-, and Eustigmatophyta-like sequences which were detected for the first time highlighting their importance in mangrove ecosystem. This study clearly shows that a combination of microscopy and molecular tools can improve understanding of phytoplankton assemblages in mangrove environments.

The International Polar Year 2007–2008 (IPY), which was launched on 1 March 2007 with an observing and fieldwork period between then and 1 March 2009, is now more than halfway through its official period. In this brief report we review the progress and achievements of IPY to date, and we provide a view to the eventual outcome of the program. In doing this, we assess IPY progress against criteria similar to those that were used to endorse IPY projects [Rapley et al., 2004]. We particularly try to establish the extent to which IPY has catalyzed a level of research and advance that would not have otherwise occurred.
