Resting tremor (RT) is one of the most frequent signs of the Parkinson's disease (PD), occurring with various severities in about 75% of the patients. Current diagnosis is based on subjective clinical assessment, which is not always easy to capture subtle, mild and intermittent tremors. The aim of the present study is to assess the suitability and clinical value of a computer based real-time system as an aid to diagnosis of PD, in particular the presence of RT. Five healthy subjects were asked to simulate several severities of RT in hands and feet in three static activities. The behaviour of the subjects is measured using tri-axial accelerometers, which are placed at four different positions on the body. Frequency-domain features, strongly correlated with the RT activity, are extracted from the accelerometer data. The classification of RT severity based on those features, provided accuracy 76%. The real-time system designed for efficient extraction of those features and the provision of a continuous RT severity measure is described.

In this paper, we present a VSS-based tracking control for a fixed point regulation of 2-DOF underactuated manipilators The design approach is systematic and relies on the selection of appropriate choice of two sliding surface. The controller is designed for the both sliding surfaces are attractive. Lyapunov theory is used to study and demonstrate the stability of the system. Convergence of state space is proved and robustness issues to bounded disturbances are also investigated. Simulation results on 2-DOF whirling pendulum are presented to chow the effectiveness of this approach.

Trauma is the main leading cause of death in children; we need a tool to prevent and predict the outcome in these patients. Data mining is the science of extracting the useful information from a large amount of data sets or databases that leads to statistical and logical analysis and looking for patterns that could help the decision makers. In This paper we offer an approach for using data mining in classifying mortality rate related to accidents in children under 15. These data were gathered from the patient files which were recorded in the medical record section of the Alzahra Hospital in Isfahan. The data mining methods in use are decision tree and Bayes' theorem. Applying DM techniques to the data brings about very interesting and valuable results. It is concluded that in this case, comparing the result of evaluating the models on test set, decision tree works better than Bayes' theorem. In this paper, we have used Clementine12.0 for creating the models.

We consider power systems for which the amount of power produced by their individual power plants is small with respect to the total generation of the system, and analyze how the transient instability mechanisms of these systems change qualitatively when their size or the dispersion of their generators increases. Simulation results show that loss of synchronism will propagate more slowly and even stop propagating. Given the evolution of power systems towards more dispersed generation and geographically larger interconnections, we conclude that research in transient stability should focus more on the propagation of the loss of synchronism over longer time periods, so as to assess what happens to the overall system subsequently to the loss of synchronism of the first generators. We also argue that such studies might be very useful in order to provide guidelines for setting up power system control schemes to contain the propagation of instabilities, and we discuss some ideas for designing islanding based emergency control schemes for this.

Controlling an underactuated manipulator with less actuators than degree of freedom is a challenging problem, specifically when it is to force the underactuated manipulator to track a given trajectory or to be configurated at a specific position in the work space. This paper presents a cascade sliding mode tracking controller for set-point regulation of 2-DOF underactuated manipulators. This work builds on an observation that an underactuated manipulator can be treated as two subsystems. Consequently, a cascade sliding mode tracking controller can be designed as follows. First, a sliding mode surface is designed for both subsystems, this two sliding surfaces represent a first layer in the design architecture. A second layer sliding mode surface is then constructed based on the first layer sliding surface. The cascaded sliding mode controller is therefor deduced in terms of Lyapunov stability theorem. Robustness issues to bounded disturbances are then investigated. Simulation results on 2-DOF whiling pendulum are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.

We have performed numerical study on random Boolean networks with power-law rank outdegree distributions to find local structural cause for emergence of high or low degree of coherence in binary state variables of the entire networks. The degree of randomness and coherence of the binary sequence, are measured by entropy and mutual information, depend on local structure that consists of a node with highly connected, called hub, and its upstream nodes, and types of Boolean functions for the nodes. With the larger number of output connections from a hub, the effects of Boolean function on the hub are more prominent. The local structures that give larger entropy tends to give rise to larger mutual information. On the basis of both numerical results and structural condition we derived time-independnt transmission characteristic function of state variables for local structures. We show good relations between the numerical and the analytical results, reveals that dynamical properties from the whole networks can be inferred from the differences in the local structures. ©ISAROB 2007.

This paper discusses the application of the idea of federated filtering to the estimation of intrinsically nonlinear distributed systems by examining its impacts on filtering performance by using the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) as state estimator. Specifically, the performance of the traditional centralized solution is compared with the filtering structure obtained using the federating idea, and their conceptions, and their ability to balance between fault tolerance and estimation accuracy is examined. Our research demonstrates how successfully the EKF for solving nonlinear estimation problems in federated structures can be used, noting that the idea of federation have only been demonstrated for linear problems previously. In addressing the demands of both fault tolerance and estimation accuracy, it is shown that increased filtering accuracy is relied on the proper choice of sharing of the error covariance information between local filters, while sensor fault tolerance is provided by the utilization of an appropriate resetting policy of the filter.

This paper presents a modified topology of the neutral-point-clamped converter. The main change consists on adding a fourth leg, which is based on the flying-capacitor converter structure. The aim of this additional leg is to provide fault tolerance to the converter. Furthermore, during normal operation mode, this leg is able to provide a stiff neutral voltage. Consequently, the low-frequency voltage oscillations that appear in the neutral point of the standard three-level topology for some operation conditions no longer exist As a result, the modulation strategy of the three main legs of the converter does not have to take care of voltage balance, and it can be design to achieve optimal output voltage waveforms, as well as to improve efficiency of the converter. Some simulation results are presented to show viability of this approach under both, normal operation mode and fault event. Experimental results are expected to include in the final paper.
