Attack of shoot-sucking pests on gerunggang (Cratoxylum arborescens (Vahl.) Blume) in peatland rehabilitation

Gerunggang (Cratoxylum arborescens (Vahl.) Blume) is one of the native peat forest species in Indonesia. This species is widely used in the rehabilitation of degraded peatlands. Information about the cultivation and growth of gerunggang on peat rehabilitated land is still limited. Even information about pest disturbances of gerunggang has never been reported before on research sites. This study aims to measure the intensity of gerunggang pest attacks on peatland rehabilitation plantations. Observations were taken on one-year-old gerunggang species planted on peat rehabilitation land in Kubu Raya Regency, West Kalimantan province, Indonesia. The results showed that shoot-sucking pests Mictis longicornis (Hemiptera, Coreidae) had attacked all gerunggang plants or the pest attack incidence reached 100%. Symptoms of pest attacks are indicated by rotting of the shoot stalk, which in turn causes shoot death. Pests M. longicornis attack by sucking the liquid on the stems of Gerunggang shoots, causing the shoots to rot and die. The attack intensity reached 50.56% or was classified as a heavy pest attack. Although the pest attack does not result in the death of the gerunggang plant, its abundance can interfere with plant growth. Therefore, pest attacks need to be controlled to avoid further losses, such as a reduction in gerunggang’s potential as a native species for peatland rehabilitation and other benefits.

Fuel cell is one of alternative method to replace fossil fuel energy. The important component of fuel cell is a membrane that used for separating cathode and anode also as a proton conductor. The purpose of this research is to produce polymer electrolyte membrane from poly (eugenol sulfonate) (PES) as polymer matrix, characterize the resulting membrane analysis using ionic properties analysis by calculating ionic conductivity using impedance spectroscopy, ion exchange capacity (IEC), solvent absorption analysis by calculating water uptake and methanol permeability, and studying mechanism Proton transport that occurs on the membrane. This research was initiated by making polymer of PES, and then fabrication and characterization of electrolytic polymer membrane. The formed membrane has an optimal proton conductivity of 0.00095 ***-1 with PES composition of 22% (wt).

Which knowledge counts? Contested meanings of water quality, responsibility and involvement in river restoration discourse in Indonesia

Since 2001, the Indonesian government has formulated and implemented several restoration programs to improve the Citarum’s water quality. However, these programs were often contested, particularly concerning the meanings of ‘water quality’ and how those informed approaches to responsibility and involvement. This paper problematises river restoration in view of these controversies towards improving people’s lives and their environment. Our investigation found (1) a selective use of scientific knowledge of water quality and related responsibilities; (2) a tension between broader inclusion and military involvement in river restoration; and (3) a diverse host of informal restoration practices that largely remain unnoticed in view of the government programs. The findings indicate that river governance can benefit from recognising and tuning into below-the-radar restoration practices to tackle river pollution.

Evaluation of chili accessions for resistance against Thrips sp. (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)

Thrips sp. (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is one of chili pests that can cause significant crop losses by 23% and be even more harmful due to its ability to transmit virus. The use of resistant variety is one sensible strategy to control this pest attack. Thirty chili accessions were evaluated for resistance by counting of the number of pest, recording leaf damage and observing accessions morphological characters. The evaluation was conducted in the research Field Station of Indonesian Vegetable research Institute, Lembang, West java from March to July 2020. Ten of the 30 accessions had low leaf damage and were considered to be used as female parents in breeding program of resistant chili against Thrips sp.

Total phenolic content and antioxidant activity in eight cowpea ( Vigna unguiculata) genotypes

Cowpea is considered as one of the underutilized legumes which is rich in secondary metabolites. These metabolites can be detected during the plant growth and the contents increase especially after the plants are stressed both abiotic and biotic. This study aimed to determine total phenolic and flavonoid contents as well as antioxidant activity in seeds of eight cowpea genotypes. Two extraction solvents (70% acetone and 70% acidified acetone) were used to extract the secondary metabolites in those cowpea genotypes. Total flavonoid contents of those genotypes extracted in 70% acetone and 70% acidified acetone were in the range from 7.28 to 10.90 mg CE/g and 7.84 to 11.58 mg CE/g, whereas total phenolic contents were from 15.20 to 19.99 mg GAE/g and 15.03 to 21.15 mg GAE/g. Inhibition percentages of antioxidant activity were in the range from 46.90 % to 59.46 % and 50.71 % to 63.81 % for 70% acetone and 70% acidified acetone, respectively. Both solvents were effective to extract those secondary metabolites. Flavonoid and phenolic contents of MLGU 0239 were the highest among other genotypes, which were 11.58 mg CE/g and 21.15 GAE/g and antioxidant activity was 63.81 % inhibition after being extracted with 70% acidified acetone. This study observed the variation of the secondary metabolites among eight cowpea genotypes with different seed coat colours.

Tidal and lowland swamps have the potential to be used as agricultural land. However, to manage their sustainably, it needs technological improvements to increase productivity such as the diversity of indigenous microbes. This research was conducted to explore the information on culturable bacterial diversity and their potency in the tidal swamp soils of South Kalimantan and lowland swamp soils of South Sumatra. Our current research was conducted in laboratory at the Indonesian Center for Agricultural Biotechnology and Genetic Resources research and development. Two samples were isolated from tidal swamp soils at Jerapat Baru Village, Tamban, Barito Kuala District, South Kalimantan province and lowland swamp soils at Tapus Village, Pampangan, Ogan Komering Ilir District, South Sumatra province. Serial dilution and molecular identification were used to assess the diversity of bacterial species. Production of IAA, siderophores, and ACC deaminase were evaluated. A total of 11 species comprising Lysinibacillus xylanilyticus 26.1, Bacillus cereus 26.2, B. cereus 26.3, B. subtilis 27.1, B. siamensis 27.2, Brevibacillus halotolerans 27.3, Peanibacillus alvei 27.4, Lysinibacillus xylanilyticus 27.5, B. nitratireducens 27.6, B. cereus 27.7, and B. cereus 27.8 was chacterized from two samples collected from these areas. The most abundant group was Firmicutes. The dominant species in both tidal and lowland swamp soils were B. cereus and L. xylanilyticus, while common species was B. cereus. Potential analysis showed that all bacterial isolates were able to produce IAA, siderophores, and ACC deaminase. The bacterial diversity was higher in South Sumatra than that of South Kalimantan. The differences were observed in percentage occurrence of bacterial species between two type of swamp lands. The reason may be that the soil pH condition, quality of litters, different micro-environments and other characteristics in those areas. Soil pH in South Sumatera is higher than South Kaliman

Effect of Inorganic Fertilizer on Morphological and Physiological Responses In 'Siam' (Tangerine) and 'Keprok' (Mandarin) Seedlings Under Nursery House

The growth of citrus seedlings has not only been influenced by fertilizer management but also species and cultivar as well. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the growth performance of Siam and Keprok seedling to inorganic fertilizer treatment under nursery house. research was conducted in Nursery House, ICISFRI, Batu, east java, Indonesia from February to November 2020. Factorial Randomized Block Design was used in this research consisted of two factors, I: Doses (0 %; 50 %: 2.5 g NPK + 2.5 g ZA/plant), and II: Cultivars (Tangerine/Siam cv. Banjar, Madu, and Pontianak; Mandarin/Keprok cv. Gayo, Kacang, and Madura) with three replications. An orthogonal contrast analysis was also used to identify the response of Tangerine and Mandarin group. Among 16 variables, only plant height, leaf thickness, and shoot dry weight were significantly influenced by the interaction between doses and cultivars with value of p<0.01; R2= 98.08 %; p<0.05; R2= 85.77 %; and p<0.01; R2= 99.14 %, respectively. Eight of 16 morphological and physiological traits (50 %) applied with either 0 % or 50 % gave similar responses between Mandarin and Tangerine group. Application of 50 % and 0 % produced 68.80 % and 81.30 % of similarities between Tangerine cv. Pontianak and Banjar, respectively. Meanwhile, similarities of Tangerine (Pontianak and Banjar) versus Tangerine cv. Madu that was applied with 0 % and 50 % of fertilizer application were 68.75 and 93.75 %, respectively.

The development potential of multipurpose trees in northern Bandung special area as alternative for sustainable land use in upstream area

Northern Bandung is Strategic Area of West java which has important function and role in environmental sustainability of Bandung Basin. Currently, land utilization in that area is uncontrolled. It threatens the sustainability function of conservation area, since its function as watersheds, then cause various natural disasters such as erosion, landslides, and floods in the downstream areas. This study aimed to determine the potential of Northern Bandung as a Multipurpose Trees Special (MPTS) area and as an alternative to sustainable land use in upstream area. The research was done by field survey and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The results showed that Northern Bandung is grouped into four cultivation areas, namely: (1) Dryland Cultivation Areas (DCA), (2) Annual Plant Cultivation Areas (APCA), (3) Plantation Cultivation Areas (PCA) and (4) Conservation Area (CA). The MPTS area can be developed in DCA, APCA and PCA with area of approximately 11,924 ha. The development of MPTS Agricultural Area must consider the area characteristics by selecting environmentally friendly and sustainable cultivation technology. Alternative cultivation technologies which could be developed such as: 1) Mix Cropping pattern Technology Coffee Plants with Annual Plant, and 2) Mix Cropping pattern Technology Coffee Plants, Annual Plants and Seasonal Plants.

ConTraEmSis: The Congested Traffic and Emission Index Impact Analysis Amid the Large-Scale Social Restrictions (LSSR) of COVID-19 in Several Cities of West java, Indonesia

In some metropolitan cities of West java province, the urban movability affects to the congested traffic. This study analyzes the congested traffic during the large-scale social re-strictions (LSSR) of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) around some metropolitan cities of West java province in May-June 2020. The national government of the Republic of Indonesia declared a national's LSSR just for some the essential and critical activities are being acquiesced still enforce. Our proposed method, namely, ConTraEmSis is contributed to analyze the congested traffic two months from May-June 2020. We exploit the geomatic of the congested traffic in the COVID-19 information & coordination center West java province (PIKOBAR) dataset for Bogor, Depok, and Bekasi (Bodebek areas), Bandung areas, and whole West java province areas. We exploit the road transport and traffic management center (RTTM) and area traffic control system (ATCS) and index their data for the Bodebek and Bandung areas. The ConTraEmSis demonstrates that the congested traffic the LSSR of COVID-19 reduces around 18%-49% every month. Instead, the java government always launch the many good governance policies to support the LSSR of the COVID-19 system. proposed model shows that after the LSSR in 2019 and 2020, is reduced between 3.27% and 5.27%. On the week-day afternoon, we scale down between 4.52% and 4.74%. On the weekend morning, we cut down between 1.3% to 1.5% before and after LSSR of 2019 and 2020, respectively. The congested traffic trends get 24% and 41% in the weekdays and weekends, respectively, since the LSSRs. Onto the weekend afternoon, we perform 13.4% and 14.8% for reducing the CO2 emission index during the LSSR's 2020. We achieve the important congestion get an emission index lower than 0.3.

Agronomic characteristics and potential of local variety of citronella oil in Cianjur Regency, West java

West java is one of the largest citronella oil producers in Indonesia. Currently, several communities in West java are still developing citronella grass with local varieties that have been passed down from generation to generation and have not been identified. This study aims to identify the potential of citronella grass in the Cikadu region as a local superior variety. The research was conducted in Cikadu District, Cianjur Regency, West java province in May-June 2021. The research methods involved survey techniques as well as laboratory tests. The survey was conducted to identify the morphology of citronella, the characteristics of habitat and its use by the local community, while laboratory tests were conducted to determine the yield and quality of citronella oil. The results showed five accessions of citronella have morphology differences in leaf width and leaf blade stiffness, especially in young leaves whose shoots grew from the middle of the clump weevil. The four accessions include Puncak Sirna (PS) 01, PS02, PS03 and PS04. Citronella grass habitat soil conditions are classified as infertile. This is indicated by several parameters of the soil, including soil pH levels classified as acidic to slightly acidic, C-organic content is classified as very low to very high, cation exchange capacity (CEC) levels are classified as very low to very high and Base Saturation (KB) is classified as very low to high. The analysis of citronella oil content shows that the quality of citronella was 39.05% – 49.01% with the highest citronella content in PS02 accession (49.01%). Meanwhile, the distillation results show a general yield value of 0.83% - 2.08% with the highest yield is obtained by PS04 accession (2.08%). Citronella oil refining is quite economical and is capable of empowering communities living around forest in research location.
