The First International Conference on Genetic Resources and Agricultural Biotechnology (The 1st ICGRB) was held in IPB International Convention Center on 20-21 August 2018, Bogor, Indonesia. The theme of the conference was "Information system and exchanges of genetic resources for effective crop improvement". This conference facilitated the share and exchange of ideas, information and achievements on the management and utilization of plant genetic resources supported by biotechnology among researchers and academicians. This 1st ICGRB was also expected to result in bright ideas that will trigger international collaboration to resolve global agricultural challenges, in particular Indonesian challenge toward a sustainable bio-industry agriculture. Twelve invited speakers (Indonesia, Italy, Switzerland, Japan, Iran, USA, UK, South Korea and Singapore) shared their knowledge and experience with interactive discussion. In addition to Indonesian scientists, this event was successfully attracted approximately 150 participants coming from around seven countries joined in the plenary and parallel sessions as well as two consecutive international workshops. A total of 80 oral presentations on many crops with varied research areas were delivered in the conference by participating scientists. This conference was very useful in promoting and enhancing the applied technologies and related regulations on genetic resources exchange for crop improvement. © 2020 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The role of neuroprotection in the zebrafish (Danio rerio) animal model

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) can be used as an alternative animal model in neuroscience research. Zebrafish are vertebrate animals that have 90% more genetic similarities and various pathways with humans. The development of embryos to adults is experienced outside the body, making it easier to observe when giving treatment during research. Observations of anatomy, molecular, genetic, behavioral and cognitive levels can be assessed and observed during the study. Making stroke models, Alzeimer’s and Parkinson’s can be used to get new drugs, new drug toxicity, pathogenesis of a disease and drug mechanisms against a disease. Therapy using neurotrophic factors such as brain derived neurotrophic factor/BDNF has been reported as anti-inflammatory and prevents neuronal cell death or neuroprotection. Therapeutic effects can be done by analyzing transcriptomically and observing changes in behavior. Disturbances in the fish’s body can be seen in their behavior and cognitive spatial. To determine the conditions can be done by using a camera with automatic software that records of all fish activities. The use of zebrafish as a model animal can reduce the 3Rs principle (reduction) in the use of larger animal models. In addition, the translational research gap from in vitro drug discover trials to clinical trials can be narrowed. Preclinical trials in vivo on the right animal models can provide better and more accurate information.

Dynamic of soil phosphorus fractions and its correlation with maize yield on organic acids application with phosphate rock in upland acid soil

This research was conducted to determine the effect of organic acids (OAs) application and phosphate rock on soil P fractionation and its correlation with maize yields. This greenhouse study was carried out using a complete factorial randomized complete design with three replications. The first factor was the types of OA, consisting of citric, humic, succinic, and oxalic acids. Meanwhile, the second factor was the concentration levels of OA at 0, 25, 50, 100, and 200 ppm. The hybrid maize (Zea mays L) variety of Pioneer was used as an indicator crop, and the parameters observed were soil pH, soil P fractions (as available P, Al-P, Fe-P, reducible P (R-P), Occluded P (O-P0), Ca-P, and maize yield. Soil samples were taken seven days after planting (DAP), 14 DAP, 28 DAP, and 105 DAP. The soil P fractions were fractionated using Chang and Jackson method. The results show that, in general, OA types treatments had not significantly affected all soil P fractions, which was in contrast to OA concentration levels treatments which significantly affected soil pH and all soil P fractions, except for R-P and O-P. Increasing soil pH would increase all soil P fractions except R-P and O-P. There was a significant correlation between pH and soil P fraction with maize yield, except for R-P and O-P, with a moderate relationship. The correlation between the P fraction shows a significant to a strong relationship, except for R-P and O-P fractions were very weak.

Technology of rubberized asphalt is significantly increased for the last five years among three highest natural rubber producing countries. Fresh natural rubber which is used as asphalt cement additive, consists of pre-vulcanized natural rubber latex (NRL), solid rubber compound, and master-batch. Selection of fresh natural rubber types are strongly influenced by process-ability, while dosage of fresh natural rubber determine rubberized asphalt properties. Mixing of pre-vulcanized NRL with hot melted asphalt is run at stirred mixer, while addition of solid rubber compound and master-batch into asphalt is conducted by using high shear mixer at 150 °C. Observation during rubberized asphalt production shows that mixing of solid rubber based asphalt additive was longer (12 h) than pre-vulcanized NRL (4 h). Longer mixing time due to solid rubber tend to swell in the hot melted asphalt since there is polarity difference between rubber particles and asphalt. Analysis of rubberized asphalt physical property shows that pre-vulcanized NRL produces highest elastic recovery value (40–70%) compared to rubberized asphalt based on solid rubber (25.8%). High elastic recovery indicates better resistance of rubberized asphalt against high traffic load and harsh environment. It can be concluded that during field trial test, usage of pre-vulcanized NRL is more beneficial. © 2020 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

Indonesia is a country with a rich array of traditional meals renowned for their health benefits and potential to serve as functional foods, including dadih. Several studies have shown that dadih is a traditional fermented product from Indonesia, with various culinary applications. In addition, it is typically produced from fermented buffalo milk, which forms an unchanged or broken lump when fermented at room temperature. This product is also widely consumed by the Minangkabau ethnic group in Central Sumatra (nowadays known as the provinces of west Sumatra, Riau, Kepulauan Riau, and Jambi), holding a significant position in their culinary practices. Dadih is often traditionally processed through spontaneous fermentation in bamboo containers without the need for additional inoculation with buffalo milk. The indigenous dadih lactic acid bacteria has been evaluated to have several advantages, including immunomodulatory, antioxidant, antimutagenic, hypocholesterolemic, and antimicrobial properties, by various mechanisms. In addition, this product offers significant nutritional content, promoting digestive health and enhancing the body’s resilience. © The Author(s) 2024.

Correlation between independent learning through E-learning and capacity of extension workers

The research objectives are: (1) to describe the level of independent learning of extension workers through e-learning and the capacity of extension workers in carrying out their functions and (2) to analyze the relationship between the capacity and the independent learning of extension workers through e-learning. The study was conducted in Cianjur and Bogor Districts, Indonesia, and in the learning area of the Open University of Indonesia in 2019. Respondents were 96 extension workers who were studying at the Open University of Indonesia in 2019 through census techniques, and 160 extension workers in Bogor and Cianjur Districts who were selected using cluster random sampling. Data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially using the Pearson rank correlation test. The results show that in general, extension workers have good level of independent learning related to their learning process using the internet. The best independent learning is the level of information sharing activity, while the lowest independent learning is the level of learning creativity and self-confidence. Its also showed that in general, the extension workers had a good level of capacity. The best capacity is the ability to facilitate learning and strive for environmental preservation, while the medium category is the ability to seek leadership, managerial, entrepreneurial and organizational development. The results of the correlation test showed that there is a positive and significant correlation between the extension workers independence learning and their capacity.

Raru is a local name referring to those of wild tropical trees belonging to the member of Dipterocarpaceae family which are targeted by illegal logger for its wood and bark. Raru wood is widely used for buildings and furniture, while its bark is used for medicinal purposes. Raru tree has disjunctive distribution in Sumatera and Kalimantan with different species variations. The high demand on raru wood has led to population decrease in their natural distribution, meaning that conservation is needed for this species. Species identification is the initial step to determine diversity and relatedness among raru species. The objective of this study was to identify the morphological character of local raru trees in Sibuluan Nauli and to determine their phylogenetic relatedness. Morphological identification was conducted by observing and measuring the stem, leaf, canopy, and resin characters. The results of morphological analysis showed that there were variations in morphological characters of local raru tree species. The phylogenetic identification of songal raru, dahanon raru, pulut raru, and jonggi raru showed that songal raru and pulut raru were not closely related, with genetic distance of 0.8473 while the n dahanon raru and jonggi were closely related, with genetic distance of 0.3878. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Gerunggang (Cratoxylum arborescens (Vahl.) Blume) is one of the native peat forest species in Indonesia. This species is widely used in the rehabilitation of degraded peatlands. Information about the cultivation and growth of gerunggang on peat rehabilitated land is still limited. Even information about pest disturbances of gerunggang has never been reported before on research sites. This study aims to measure the intensity of gerunggang pest attacks on peatland rehabilitation plantations. Observations were taken on one-year-old gerunggang species planted on peat rehabilitation land in Kubu Raya Regency, west Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. The results showed that shoot-sucking pests Mictis longicornis (Hemiptera, Coreidae) had attacked all gerunggang plants or the pest attack incidence reached 100%. Symptoms of pest attacks are indicated by rotting of the shoot stalk, which in turn causes shoot death. Pests M. longicornis attack by sucking the liquid on the stems of Gerunggang shoots, causing the shoots to rot and die. The attack intensity reached 50.56% or was classified as a heavy pest attack. Although the pest attack does not result in the death of the gerunggang plant, its abundance can interfere with plant growth. Therefore, pest attacks need to be controlled to avoid further losses, such as a reduction in gerunggang’s potential as a native species for peatland rehabilitation and other benefits.

Trapped volatile organic compounds produced by bacterial antagonists affect the growth of Sclerotium rolfsii

Sclerotium rolfsii is a broadly-host pathogen that causes disease in various plants, including Aloe vera (L.) Burm.f., and is commonly controlled with fungicides. Other alternative control methods using bacteria antagonists are worth studying. The study aimed to evaluate the effect of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) trapped on solid agar on the growth of S. rolfsii. The bacterial isolates, i.e., Serratia sp. S108 and Brucella sp. BE60 were streaked on nutrient agar, covered and sealed with trapping agar media and then incubated for 3 days at 28 °C. The trapping media used were water agar (WA) 1.75%, and WA enriched with active carbon (WAC), i.e., 0.25%, 0.375%, and 0.5%. Clove oil (1 ml) was used as a standard VOCs control. The treated trapped agar media were then inoculated with S. rolfsii and incubated for three days at 28 °C. The growth diameter of fungus on the trapped agar was compared with non-treated WA. The experiment was designed completely random, with three replications. Also, the trapped VOCs agar media were seeded with surface sterilized seeds of Brassica juncea L. to know its effect on seed growth. The study showed that the trapped VOCs agar media of WA and WAC inhibited the radial growth of S. sclerotium and B. juncea. The study implies that the trapped VOCs of bacterial isolates could be further investigated as an alternative method to control fungus; however, it should be borne in mind that the VOCs also repressed seed growth.

Scaphium macropodum or malvanut or locally known as Kembang semangkok was member of Sterculiacease those well adapted under closed canopy stratum. The species was targeted for illegal logger due to its valuable seed that has many benefits for medicinal purposes and the wood for building and construction. This extraction causing Kembang semangkok classified at least concern according to IUCN redlist. Lack information on the existence and morphology on Kembang semangkok in North Sumatra, causing confusing identification in the field. Therefore, our research was conducted to identify leaf morphology and assumed ontogeny of Kembang semangkok originated from Gunung Leuser National Park. The research was conducted through survey method on 9 (nine) plot of Kembang semangkok. Observation and measurement for morphology were carry out on leaf organ those were leaf shape, leaf arrangement, leaf composition, leaf margin, leaf base, leaf blade and leaf apex. Our research showed that ontogenic change was found in Kembang semangkok due to their respond to survival and plant growth. The changes can be identified by leaf shape from entire (under 50 cm height) into palmed-parted leaf (taller than 50 cm) and returned onto entire after 12 m height. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
