The Hazard Detection System (HDS) is a component of the ALHAT (Autonomous Landing and Hazard Avoidance Technology) sensor suite, which together provide a lander Guidance, Navigation and control (GN&C) system with the relevant measurements necessary to enable safe precision landing under any lighting conditions. The HDS consists of a stand-alone compute element (CE), an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), and a gimbaled ash LIDAR sensor that are used, in real-time, to generate a Digital Elevation Map (DEM) of the landing terrain, detect candidate safe landing sites for the vehicle through Hazard Detection (HD), and generate hazard-relative navigation (HRN) measurements used for safe precision landing. Following an extensive ground and helicopter test campaign, ALHAT was integrated onto the Morpheus rocket-powered terrestrial test vehicle in March 2014. Morpheus and ALHAT then performed five successful free flights at the simulated lunar hazard field constructed at the Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF) at Kennedy Space Center, for the first time testing the full system on a lunar-like approach geometry in a relevant dynamic environment. During these flights, the HDS successfully generated DEMs, correctly identified safe landing sites and provided HRN measurements to the vehicle, marking the first autonomous landing of a NASA rocket-powered vehicle in hazardous terrain. Measuring linear and angular displacement with high accuracy requires expensive equipment and may interfere with the measurements due to sensors weight and size. In this paper, we propose a low cost vision based approach for measuring linear & angular displacement that can make the earthquake research more *** keep detecting process as fast as possible and meet real-time demands, a typical marker with a peculiar color inside chooses and all instructions performed by Intel CVLib filters. So according to the tests, if the minimum requirement are met, the proposed method can detect marker up to 25 frames per second. Finally, a prototype software implemented to analysis functionality and accuracy of proposed algorithm. The results shown that this vision-based method can achieve accuracy of 0.1mm, with an off-the-shelf three pixel per millimeter, and it can be perfectly used instead of traditional instruments such as LVDT.

The infinite dimensionality, varying, uncertainties or even unknown boundary conditions render the derivation and - in particular - the identification of accurate dynamics models for elastic link robots tedious and error prone. This contribution circumvents these challenges by the prior application of a model-free inner loop oscillation damping controller before modelling the robot's dynamics. Then, the damped dynamics of a multi elastic link robot arm under gravity can be modelled with high accuracy. An analytical and a data-driven model for the damped dynamics are proposed and quantitatively compared. Both models can explain motor currents as well as link strain measurements in real-time. The paper includes an experimental model validation with different payloads in the entire workspace of the robot.

The goal of the work presented here is to influence the overall behaviour of specific animal societies by integrating computational mechatronic devices (robots) into those societies. To do so, these devices should be accepted by the animals aspart of the society and/or as part of the collectively formed environment. For that, we have developed two sets of robotic hardware for integrating into societies of two different animals: zebra fish and young honeybees. We also developed mechanisms to provide feedback from the behaviours of societies for the controllers of the robotic system. Two different computational methods are then used as the controllers of the robots in simulation and successfully adapted by evolutionary algorithms to influence the simulated animals for desired behaviours. Together, these advances in mechatronic hardware, feedback mechanisms, and controller methodology are laying essential foundations to facilitate experiments on modulating self-organised behaviour in mixed animal -- robot societies.
