A combination of cloud-based deep learning (DL) algorithms with portable/wearable (P/W) devices has been developed as a smart heath care system to support automatic cardiac arrhythmias (CAs) classification using electrocardiography (ECG). However, long-term and continuous ECG monitoring is challenging because of limitations of batteries and transmission bandwidth of P/W devices while incorporated with consumer electronics (CE). A feasible approach to address this challenge is to decrease sampling rates. However, low sampling rates lead to low-resolution signals that hinder the CAs classification performance. In this study, we propose a DL-based ECG signal super-resolution framework (called SRECG) to enhance low-resolution ECG signals by jointly considering the accuracies when applied to the DL-based high-resolution multiclass classifier (HMC) of CAs. In our experiments, we downsampled the ECG signals from the CPSC2018 dataset and evaluated their HMC accuracies with and without the SRECG. Experimental results show that SRECG can well improve the HMC accuracies as compared to traditional interpolation methods. Moreover, approximately half of the CAs classification accuracies of HMC were maintained within the enhanced ECG signals by SRECG. The promising results confirm that SRECG can be suitably used to enhance low-resolution ECG signals from P/W devices with CE to improve their cloud-based HMC performances. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

As bullying rapidly spreads in schools, many parents are becoming increasingly concerned about their children being subjected to bullying by peers, which could negatively impact their physical and mental health. This paper proposes an abusive language detection system that combines Mel-frequency Cepstrum Coefficients (MFCC) speech features with a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Audio files which contain daily abusive phrases in the Minnan dialect are initially preprocesses to eliminate non-speech interference. Subsequently, the MFCC algorithm is applied to extract speech features that closely capture auditory characteristics. The CNN classification model is trained to learn the MFCC features and classify the phrases into their respective categories. Experimental results indicate that the CNN model achieves an average recognition accuracy of 91.9%. Finally, the CNN model was deployed on an embedded platform, where it achieves an average recognition time of 0.54 seconds per phrase and an average recognition accuracy of 86.25%.

As the global population ages, the number of elderly people needing hearing aids is increasing. This paper proposed an architecture designed to enhance speech based on noise conditions. After noise types are identified by a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) noise classification model, these noise conditions are combined with the noisy speech and input into a conditional Generative Adversarial Network (cGAN) for speech enhancement. The CNN noise classification model achieves an average recognition accuracy of nearly 92%, with a Kappa value as high as 0.88. The cGAN speech enhancement achieves lower error values in the Mel-Cepstral Distortion (MCD) measure. Although some parts of the human voice may be filtered out, the results demonstrate the potential development of the proposed algorithm. © 2024 IEEE.

The U.S. Army's Future Vertical Lift (FVL) program is developing a new fleet of aircraft that is set to replace the UH-60 Black Hawk and the AH-64 Apache. These new aircraft will include autonomous systems and have increased capabilities of speed, maneuverability, and operational range. With this increase in capability, there will be an increased overload in Aviators' cognitive state leading to mishaps and accident fatalities. Operator state monitoring through psychophysiological indices and biomarkers are used to identify cognitive states. Subject matter experts completed two rounds of a Delphi-style survey to determine the reliability of selected sensors and biomarkers when incorporated in aviator operational environments.

Bamboo is a promising natural fiber source for developing sustainable and green textile materials. Different fiber treatment techniques have been explored to produce natural bamboo textile fibers (BTF) with enhanced physical and chemical characteristics suitable for yarn processing and fabric weaving. This study presents a facile, low-cost, and environmentally friendly technique of transforming natural bamboo raw fiber into a yarn-spinnable BTF that can be developed into an all-natural fiber-based blended yarn. The combined alkali and multi-enzyme treatment of natural BTF resulted in a notable enhancement in the linear density, tenacity, and elongation by 106%, 30%, and 13%, respectively. The improvement in the physical properties of the fibers is highly correlated to the reduction in the non-cellulosic components such as lignin, residual gum, fats, and waxes by 29%, 56%, and 72%, respectively, which also led to an increase in surface roughness and crystallinity of the fibers. The alkali-enzymatic treated bamboo textile fiber underwent a further mechanically intensive process to attain nearly similar dimensions with cotton fibers that serve as its carrier fiber to produce natural fiber-blended yarns containing both the excellent properties of cotton and bamboo. Thin and thick cotton-bamboo blended yarns ranging from 60 tex to 120 tex were prepared and shown to have comparable characteristics such as tenacity and elongation, which are applicable in the weaving of medium-weight and heavyweight fabrics. The alkali-enzymatic fiber treatment of BTF strongly shows its viable potential in manufacturing green and environmental-friendly natural bamboo textile materials. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

This study investigates plasma-activated water (PAW) production enhancement using a Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) reactor integrated with graphene aerogel inserts. It explores the potential for thermoelectric energy recovery. The research focuses on optimizing PAW generation by leveraging graphene aerogel’s high surface area and porosity to improve plasma-water interaction and increase the dissolution of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS). Additionally, the study examines the integration of thermoelectric materials within the reactor system to recover and utilize the thermal energy generated during plasma activation. A rotating DBD reactor design facilitates dynamic mixing and enhances contact between plasma and water. Key parameters are systematically evaluated, including rotation speed, aerogel characteristics, discharge conditions, and thermoelectric material performance. Results indicate that graphene aerogel significantly boosts PAW production efficiency while including thermoelectric materials, contributing to energy recovery and making the process more sustainable. This dual advancement in PAW technology offers potential applications in biomedical treatments, environmental remediation, and energy-efficient industrial processes. © 2024 Institute of Physics Publishing. An Insight into the antioxidant activity of the facial cream, solid soap and liquid soap made using the carotenoid extract of palmyrah (Borassus flabellifer) fruit pulp

Palmyrah fruit pulp which is seasonal, exhibits cleansing and skin moisturizing effects. It also contains carotenoids, which are antioxidants that can nourish and protect the skin from damages caused by free radicals induced by factors such as exposure to UV light. Carotenoids from the Palmyra fruit pulp were extracted in the virgin coconut oil and were used to formulate facial cream, soap, and liquid soap. The aim of this study was to determine the antioxidant activity of these three cosmetic products made using the pigment oil extract by the DPPH radical scavenging activity assay. Similar cosmetic products were made using coconut oil (no pigment) as the control samples and a popular commercial cream and soap were used for comparison. The UV-Vis characterization of the pigment oil extract confirmed the presence of β-carotenoids and it has shown green fluorescence under UV light (365 nm). The cosmetic products made using the Palmyra fruit pulp extract showed significantly greater antioxidant activity compared to that of the control and the commercial products. One (1) ml of 1 mg/ml of pigment cream, pigment soap and pigment liquid soap showed 41.58% ( ± 2.40), 66.37% ( ± 2.70) and 60.52% ( ± 0.09) inhibition respectively. The findings of this study suggest that these natural products containing the Palmyra fruit pulp extract have greater antioxidant activity and clinical trials should be done to explore their effects on the human skin. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

Objective: to evaluate the effects of the red and near-infrared wavelength lasers in isolated and simultaneous way on the modulation of inflammatory cytokines produced by human keratinocytes (HaCaT) challenged by cytokines of human monocytes stimulated by lipopolysaccharide from Escherichia coli. Design: HaCaT cells was previously exposed to the laser with wavelengths red (660 nm), near-infrared (808 nm). Then, HaCat cells were stimulated with the supernatant of lipopolysaccharide-challenged peripheral blood cells. The cytokines expressed by HaCat cells were measured using multiplex CBA assay. Results: HaCaT cells increased the production of inflammatory cytokines when stimulated with infrared laser compared to the control group (IFN-α2, IFN-γ, TNF-α, MCP-1, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL -12p70, IL -17A, IL-23, IL-33), the red laser group (IFN-γ and IL-23) and the group of two lasers used simultaneously (IFN-α2, IFN-γ, IL-6 and IL-8, IL-17A, IL-18 and IL-23) (p < 0.05). The red laser also stimulated an increase in the expression of IFN-α2 by HaCaT cells in relation to the control group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Infrared laser, with an energy density of 5 J/cm², appear to be able to modulate inflammatory cytokines produced by HaCaT cells challenged by human monocyte cytokines. © 2023

Purpose: Precision medicine according to molecularly defined subgroups offers great potential to improve outcomes for patients with metastatic lung adenocarcinoma. This study describes clinical outcomes and the impact of co-occurring genetic alterations on outcomes following stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) among patients with Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog (KRAS)-mutant lung adenocarcinoma. Methods and Materials: A total of 195 patients with KRAS-mutant lung adenocarcinoma were treated with SRS for brain metastases (BMs) between 2014 and 2018 with follow-up until 2022 or death. Coprimary outcomes were median overall survival (OS) and intracranial progression-free survival (iPFS);univariable and multivariable Cox regression models and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis were used. Results: Median follow-up from the date of BM diagnosis was 11 months. Median OS and iPFS for the cohort were 27.7 months (95% CI, 19.7-36.8) and 22.1 months (95% CI, 16.8-48.9), respectively. Lesion-level local control at 12 and 24 months was 89.9% and 87.5%, respectively. In a multivariable Cox regression model, inferior OS was associated with coalterations in KEAP1 and STK11 (hazard ratio [HR], 1.94;95% CI, 1.04-3.62;q = 0.087), progressive (HR, 3.41;95% CI, 1.38-8.39;q = 0.087), and mixed response (HR, 3.52;95% CI, 1.2-10.3;q = 0.092) extracranial disease, and 6 or more BMs at time of diagnosis (HR, 2.58;95% CI, 1.22-6.63;q = 0.087). Positive programmed death ligand 1 status was associated with improved OS (HR, 0.57;95% CI, 0.37-0.87;P = .01). Inferior iPFS was associated with chemotherapy before SRS (HR, 2.69;95% CI, 1.42-5.09;q = 0.04) and age >65 years (HR, 2.21;95% CI, 1.25-3.93;q = 0.055). KRAS G12C was not associated with differences in iPFS, OS, or type of intracranial progression event following SRS.
