The Calcasieu Ship Channel (CSC) is a deep-draft federal channel located in southwest Louisiana. It is the channelized lowermost segment of the Calcasieu River, connecting Lake Charles to the Gulf of Mexico. With support from the Regional Sediment Management program, the US Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, requested that the US Army Engineer research and development Center, Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory, perform an investigation of the potential sources of sediment associated with dredging in the CSC. A previous study had quantified sediment from known sources, indicating that the known sediment sources contribute approximately only 21% of the volume that is regularly dredged from the channel. This technical report details the results of the current study, which employed multiple methods, including numerical analysis, to identify potential additional sources of sediment by first examining the available literature and the modeled energetics and flow pathways, and then estimating the quantities of sediment associated with these identified sources that may be contributing to the shoaling of the CSC. The results of these efforts were used to update the original sediment budget with estimates of the contributions from two additional sources: the erosion of interior wetlands and coastally derived sediments.

The primary objective of this project was to understand and characterize wildland fire spread at small scales (roughly 1m1mm) using high fidelity directand large eddy simulations (DNS and LES, respectively) with reduced chemical kinetic mechanisms calibrated using data from frequency comb laserdiagnostics (FCLD). Specific objectives of this project were to (i) Understand and characterize wildland fire spread at scales from roughly 1m tobelow 1mm using DNS and LES to directly resolve relevant fluid and chemical processes. (ii) Develop and calibrate reduced chemical kineticsmechanisms for the pyrolysis, ignition, and combustion of wildland fuels. (iii) Use frequency comb laser diagnostics to study wildland fire spread at smallscales by providing data for the calibration of reduced chemical mechanisms and for simulation validation. (iv) Use insights from the computations andexperiments to perform improved simulations of wildland fire spread at landscape scales.

Contact Angle for Theoretical Parameterization of Immersion Nucleation Inferred from Deterministic Nucleation Temperature

This study derived contact angles for fifteen types of pollens, nine types of fungi, ten types of bacteria, one type of diatom, and twelve types of mineral dust for use in the parameterization of immersion freezing based on the classical nucleation theory (CNT). Our approach is to link deterministic nucleation with stochastic nucleation concepts, so the measured nucleation temperature represents the onset of nucleation with rates reaching a scale observable in the laboratory. In this way, the abundant nucleation temperature data for a variety of ice nuclei available in the literature are converted to contact angles needed in the CNT parameterization. The derived contact angles compared well with values independently obtained in earlier studies based on pure-CNT approach using laboratory nucleation rate data. The uncertainties in contact angle calculation associated with the definition of onset nucleation rate, the activation energy, and the ice-nuclei size are estimated to be about ±1~2°, ±1~5°, and ±1~2°, respectively, among different ice nuclei species. © 2023, The Authors. In this issue, readers can review a multisite, double-blind, randomized, controlled trial (DBRCT) of vortioxetine for adolescent major depression (AMD) by Findling et al. The investigators deserve credit for this industry-sponsored study's several innovations: initial treatment following current guidelines, efforts to reduce placebo response rates (PRRs), and creation of both placebo- and active-control arms. The Journal deserves our respect for its commitment to highlighting these innovations, despite the trial's negative result. It is essential to perform treatment studies in adolescents, and this study underscores the fallacy of presuming that drugs showing efficacy in adults will be as effective in our patients.

Alternative fuel recovery from used engine lubricant(UEL)and empty fruit bunch(EFB)was achieved through microwave ***-pyrolysis was chosen for its potential to improve the quality of pyrolytic oil by generating synergistic effects between two distinct feedstocks,reducing activation energy,and enhancing pyrolytic oil *** central composite design(CCD)of response surface methodology(RSM)was used to optimise the temperature and EFB *** absorption spectrometry(AAS)was employed to characterise the heavy metal concentration in the pyrolytic *** optimised pyrolytic oil(UE450)produced the highest oil yield(25.17 wt%)with the lowest metal concentration at 450℃with a 50%EFB *** fuel’s characteristics were similar to those of conventional diesel,with a higher value of HHV(45.17 MJ/kg).However,the oil was slightly acidic,with a pH of ***-MS analysis of UE450 revealed the presence of alkanes and monoaromatic-rich ***,the UE450 biochar was characterised using FTIR,FESEM,and *** analysis showed that the carbonyl group(C=O)peaks at 1730 and 1440 cm^(-1)disappeared,indicating that heavy metals were bound to the biochar ***,XRF analysis of UE450 biochar revealed that zinc(Zn)exhibited a high metal adsorption capacity,following the sequence Zn>Fe>Pb(1.96,1.06,and 0.81 mmol/g).The XRF results also indicated a significant removal of SO_(3)at approximately 10.37 mmol/g.

Complaint resolution that arise due to internal and external factors in a company can be monitored through the Service Recovery Index (SRI), and SRI is developed through a number of factors that influence it. Meanwhile, the SRI model needs to be developed to see the business sustainability through implementation knowledge management system in the organization. The data collection method was carried out, starting with building a research instrument based on knowledge management theory and continued with observation and distributing questionnaires to respondents who were involved in the business process of managing SRI. The data analysis method was used to process the data from the questionnaire, factor analysis method was used and the method to build the model used was the regression analysis method. The results obtained from this study are the discovery of 4 (four) factors with a number of indicators that are grouped on each formed factor, which can then be made and built a readiness model that reflects current conditions, so that it can be used to build predictions in the future related to readiness. implementation of knowledge management system development in order to support increased understanding of the service recovery index in the organization. © 2021 ACM.

Exercise health belief related to "Fit-Fun" exergame play interest, anxiety, practicing attitude, and exergaming performance

Exergaming enables players to engage in real-life games and sports by allowing them to move from one place to another. To investigate the effects of students' performance of sit-up exercises during an exergame, this study utilized the Fit-Fun exergame. In this game, the agent (a rabbit) is triggered to jump every time it receives a signal from the sensory detector embedded in the exercise belt. The game also enables players to compete against each other by performing sit-up exercises. This study focused on the relationship between emotions and performance in the exergame. It examined the connections between beliefs about exercise health, gameplay interest, competition anxiety, practicing attitude, and exergaming performance. Elementary school students aged 11–12 years old participated in this single-group quasi-experimental study. A total of 228 valid questionnaires were collected over a period of 6 weeks during a series of 6 practice sessions. The research hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling. The results revealed that exercise health belief was positively correlated with gameplay interest, but negatively correlated with competition anxiety. Additionally, practicing attitude was found to have a positive association with exergaming performance. Based on these findings, it is suggested that teachers can incorporate this exergame into synchronized competitions to motivate students to maintain their exercise routine by competing with their friends. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

Introduction: Herbal products have been widely used for the treatment of diseases throughout the ages. In this research, we investigated antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-adipogenic, and anti-inflammatory activities of methanolic extracts of five ethnomedicinally important plants;namely, Alnus nepalensis, Dryopteris sparsa, Artocarpus lacucha, Litsea monopetala, and Lyonia ovalifolia. Methods: We investigated the DPPH free radical scavenging potential, sensitivity of selected bacterial strains towards the extracts using a disc diffusion assay, anti-inflammatory activity in RAW-264.7 cells, and anti-adipogenic activity by the ORO assay in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. Results and discussion: The extract of A. nepalensis showed significant antioxidant activity (IC₅₀=4.838 µg/mL), followed by A. lacucha, L. monopetala, and L. ovalifolia, exhibiting comparable IC₅₀ values to that of ascorbic acid (IC₅₀=5.063 µg/mL). Alnus nepalensis also showed good antibacterial activity in disc diffusion methods, with remarkable zones of inhibition in A. baumannii (14.66 mm) and P. mirabilis (15.50 mm) bacterial species. In addition, A. nepalensis was found to increase adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 cells, evidenced by increased lipid deposition in differentiated 3T3-L1 cells. A similar pattern of increased adipogenesis was observed on treatment with L. ovalifolia extracts. On the other hand, A. lacucha effectively reduced lipid deposition in 3T3-L1 cells at 100 µg/ mL (75.18±6.42%) by inhibiting adipogenesis, showing its potential use in the management of obesity. Furthermore, A. lacucha 100 µg/mL (15.91±0.277 µM) and L. monopetala 75 µg/mL (12.52±0.05 µM) and 100 µg/mL (11.77±0.33 µM) significantly inhibited LPS-induced nitric oxide production in RAW 264.7 cells. Also, A. nepalensis and L. ovalifolia inhibited NO production significantly, endorsing their anti-inflammatory potential. This paper presents a methodology for the indirect calibration of hyperspectral images using radiometric measurements from field samples. While hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is essential in remote sensing, its accuracy depends on precise calibration, which is often challenging in the field. Most approaches rely on a single standard panel used as absolute reference and the empirical line method. This often leads to mistakes and uncertainties in the analysis. In this paper we propose an alternative that utilizes radiometric data from rock samples with known spectral properties to indirectly calibrate hyperspectral images. The results show specific improvements in accuracy, particularly in the shape of the curves, compared to standard calibration method. The calibrated images offer better material differentiation and more reliable spectral signatures, which are crucial for geological mapping and mineral exploration. This approach can enhance the reliability of hyperspectral data analysis in geological and environmental studies, especially in situations where time and logistics are challenging.
