The availability of feed plants is one of the most important components in improving the breeding ability of sambar deer in captivity. Planting program and productivity assessment of feed plants are necessary to ensure the availability of feed plants for deer, including deer management demonstration plot at Aek Nauli KHDTK. This study was aimed to observe the productivity and nutritional contents of sambar deer feed plants in Aek Nauli KHDTK. This study was performed at the deer feed plant plot. Sampling activities were conducted in the 1x1 m2 plot (for grass) and 2 x 2 m2 (for non-grass such as shrubs and herbs). The results showed that the productivity of 6 feed plants is about 51,56 kg day-1 (fresh weight) or 19,52 kg day-1 (dry weight);indicating that these plants meet the needs of 5 deer which are requiring 38.82 kg feed day-1. The average productivity of feed plants in the dominant dry days was about 33,342.75 kg ha-1 year-1 (fresh weight) or 14,977.17 kg ha-1 year-1 (dry weight). The productivity of feed plants in the dominant rainy days was about 60,687.33 kg ha-1 year-1 (fresh weight) or 20,287.92 kg ha-1 year-1 (dry weight). Nutritional contents of feed plants are water content (56.3-66.0%), protein (0.037-0.156%), ash content (5.891-7.199%), fat content (1.751-10.089%), and carbohydrate (21.597-33.932%). Required feed management strategies are regular weeding, block division, rotational harvesting system, fertilizing, watering (during the dry season), and providing additional feeds and supplements such as Pennisetum purpureum, Calliandra callothyrsus, Artocarpus heterophyllus, and Manihot utilissima. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Sedimentary rocks are of great importance for the oil and gas industry. Spectral matching using known references made on hyperspectral images is one of the most rapid and cost effective alternatives for the detailed analysis in these areas, since they can adequately catch the specific absorption features of the multiple minerals available. In many initiatives, scientists run the methods with standard spectral references, usually from spectral libraries or samples from other places. However, for the success of their application, they must be used along with spectral references that accurately describe the actual constituents of the surface. In this paper we scrutinize three different ways for mineralogical mapping performed by spectral matching techniques. The results showed that using reference spectra from samples collected directly on the surveyed environment can considerably improve the results, reaching high scores, pointing out that many places share common substances, but each specific material has particular differences that cannot be generalized.

This mini-review examines functional connectivity in resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) among opioid users. The goal is to summarize existing research data and clarify the implications of altered brain connectivity in this population. The first part of the review addresses the critical question of how opioid addiction influences the functional connectivity of key brain networks, such as the default mode network (DMN), salience network (SN), and executive control network (ECN). It examines the neurological basis of opioid addiction, the principles of rs-fMRI, different methodologies employed in this type of research, and inconsistencies and methodological challenges that complicate the interpretation of findings. The second part of the article presents findings derived from our ongoing research in the field. We tested 42 participants of whom 23 healthy controls and 19 patients with opioid use disorder. Each participant underwent an MRI scanning procedure comprised of structural, resting-state and task sequences. The neuroimaging data was processed using the CONN Toolbox running on MATLAB. Our preliminary rs-fMRI findings reveal significant disruptions in functional connectivity in individuals with opioid addiction within DMN and SN networks involved in cognitive functions such as decision-making and impulse control. The review concludes by emphasizing the importance of standardizing research practices, conducting longitudinal randomized studies, and developing a more holistic approach to understanding the effects of heroin addiction. These efforts would contribute to the development of personalized and effective intervention strategies.

Multi-granularity Argument Mining in Legal Texts

In this paper, we explore legal argument mining using multiple levels of granularity. Argument mining has usually been conceptualized as a sentence classification problem. In this work, we conceptualize argument mining as a token-level (i.e., word-level) classification problem. We use a Longformer model to classify the tokens. Results show that token-level text classification identifies certain legal argument elements more accurately than sentence-level text classification. Token-level classification also provides greater flexibility to analyze legal texts and to gain more insight into what the model focuses on when processing a large amount of input data. © 2022, CC BY-NC-SA.

Formosanin C suppresses cancer cell proliferation and migration by impeding autophagy machinery

Formosanin C (FC) is a natural compound extracted from Paris formosana Hayata with anticancer activity. FC induces both autophagy and apoptosis in human lung cancer cells. FC-induced depolarization of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) may trigger mitophagy. In this study, we clarified the effect of FC on autophagy, mitophagy, and the role of autophagy in FC-related cell death and motility. We found FC caused the continuous increase of LC3 II (representing autophagosomes) from 24 to 72 h without degradation after treatment of lung and colon cancer cells, indicating that FC blocks autophagic progression. In addition, we confirmed that FC also induces early stage autophagic activity. Altogether, FC is not only an inducer but also a blocker of autophagy progression. Moreover, FC increased MMP accompanied by overexpression of COX IV (mitochondria marker) and phosphorylated Parkin (p-Parkin, mitophagy marker) in lung cancer cells, but no colocalization of LC3 with COX IV or p-Parkin was detected under confocal microscopy. Moreover, FC could not block CCCP (mitophagy inducer)-induced mitophagy. These results imply that FC disrupts mitochondria dynamics in the treated cells, and the underlying mechanism deserves further exploration. Functional analysis reveals that FC suppresses cell proliferation and motility through apoptosis and EMT-related pathway, respectively. In conclusion, FC acts as an inducer as well as a blocker of autophagy that results in cancer cell apoptosis and decreased motility. Our findings shed the light on the development of combined therapy with FC and clinical anticancer drugs for cancer treatment. © 2023 The Authors. Role of Autoconversion Parameterization in Coupled Climate Model for Simulating Monsoon Subseasonal Oscillations

The Indian summer monsoon (ISM) and associated monsoon intraseasonal oscillations (MISOs) influence the billions of people living in the Indian subcontinent. This study explores the role of autoconversion parameterization in microphysical schemes for the simulation of MISO with the coupled climate model, e.g., the Climate Forecast System version 2 (CFSv2), by conducting sensitivity experiments in two resolutions (~100 km and ~38 km). Results reveal that the modified autoconversion parameterization better simulates the active-break spells of the ISM rainfall. The main improvements include the contrasting features of rainfall over land and ocean and the MISO index, representing MISO periodicity. The improvements are qualitatively and quantitatively more significant in the higher-resolution simulations, particularly regarding rainfall spatial patterns over the Indian subcontinent during active spells. The MISO monitoring index in the revised CFSv2 also shows improvement compared to the control run. This study concludes that proper autoconversion parameterization in the coupled climate model can lead to enhanced representation of active/break spells and sub-seasonal variability of ISM. © 2024, CC BY.

Boreal ecosystems store large quantities of carbon but are increasingly vulnerable to carbon loss due to disturbance and climate warming. The boreal region in Alaska and Canada, largely underlain by discontinuous permafrost, presents a challenging landscape for itemizing carbon sources and sinks in soil and vegetation. The roles of fire, forest succession, and the presence/absence of permafrost on carbon cycle, vegetation, and hydrologic processes have been the focus of multidisciplinary research in boreal ecosystems for the past 20 years. However, projections of a warming future climate, an increase in fire severity and extent, and the potential degradation of permafrost could lead to major landscape and carbon cycle changes over the next 20 to 50 years. To assist land managers in interior Alaska in adapting and managing for potential changes in the carbon cycle, this paper was developed incorporating an overview of the climate, ecosystem processes, vegetation, and soil regimes. The objective is to provide a synthesis of the most current carbon storage estimates and measurements to guide policy and land management decisions on how to best manage carbon sources and sinks. We provide recommendations to address the challenges facing land managers in efforts to manage carbon cycle processes. The results of this study can be used for carbon cycle management in other locations within the boreal biome which encompasses a broad distribution from 45 deg to 83 deg north.

Hibernating bat species across North America face a dangerous introduced environmental pathogen, Pseudogymnoascus destructans, which causes white-nose syndrome (WNS). WNS is an imminent extinction threat to susceptible bat species found on Department of Defense installations and neighboring lands. Our goal was to predict the impacts of WNS and fill the critical ecological, physiological, behavioral, and environmental knowledge gaps for western species before WNS arrived. To achieve this goal our objectives were to: (1) collect robust morphometric, bioenergetic, and hibernacula environmental data on up to five western NorthAmerican bat species representing different hibernating behaviors and geographic settings at three to five sites each year; (2) examine the transferability of a mechanistic WNS bioenergetics survivorship model (based on host, pathogen, and environmental characteristics) developed for bat species affected by WNS in the East to a set of five representative bat species found in the West; (3) develop approaches that integrate the mechanistic WNS survivorship model with species distribution models to evaluate the presence of WNS with plausible scenarios of non-stationary conditions (e.g. climate change) and to explore the sensitivity of the integrated model to different parameters and data availability; and (4) disseminate knowledge and findings through scientific meetings and peer-reviewed literature..

Leptospirosis, the disease caused by pathogenic bacteria of the genus Leptospira, is a major health burden for humans and animals worldwide and a recognized risk for military personnel. Leptospira has circulated for decades in California sea lions (CSL: Zalophus californianus), and an outbreak of a near-identical strain was recently discovered in endangered island foxes (Urocyon littoralis) on Santa Rosa Island (SRI), California. This raised concerns about risks to island fox subspecies on three nearby Department of Defense islands. This project studied the ecology of Leptospira in these two species of concern, and built models to analyze how non-stationary conditions affect disease incidence and impacts. Our objectives were: (1) to identify the source of the current Leptospira outbreak on SRI, (2) to understand the drivers of Leptospira dynamics in CSL and build a model to make short- and long-term predictions, and (3) to study the ecology of Leptospira in island foxes and build a model to project its future impacts on SRI and assess management strategies under changing conditions.
