We report on the terahertz emission improvement in GaAs-based photoconductive antennas (PCA) with gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs) on the PCA gap, patterned using anodic aluminum oxide template. Two PCA devices were fabricated with Au NPs having average diameters of 200 nm and 20 nm. The THz peak-to-peak intensity increased ~2-fold for the 200-nm PCA, and increased ~1.5-fold in peak-to-peak intensity for the 20-nm PCA. Finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations revealed that surface plasmon resonance enhancement effects were more pronounced for the 200-nm diameter Au NP PCA. The results demonstrate a cost-effective method of utilizing nanostructures to improve PCA performance. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A mathematical model of a sustainable H2 generation reactor that utilizes aluminum and seawater is introduced. Conservation of species and the kinetics of the H2 production reaction from aluminum and seawater allowed for obtaining the process transient response in a batch reactor. Continuous steady state production was assessed by adding a balance of energy, allowing for reactants inlet mass flow rates, and calculating the outlet H2 mass flow (generation) rate. The theoretical H2 production curve data showed good quantitative and qualitative agreement with experimental data. The validated mathematical model was then used to optimize the continuous reactor. The maximum was sharp, since an 85% variation between the maximum and the smallest H2 generation rate value as a function of the inlet NaOH solution volumetric flow rate tested range was verified. Such fundamental result stresses the importance of operating the system at the optimal condition, no matter how complex the actual reactor design may be. Since aluminum is inexpensive, abundant, and fully recyclable, in situ sustainable H2 production could allow for fuel cell stacks to become all electric ships (AES) power sources. © 2023 IEEE.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) constitutes a significant burden on global healthcare systems, especially affecting younger populations, where it is a leading cause of disability and mortality. Current treatments for TBI mainly focus on preventing further brain damage and controlling symptoms. However, despite these approaches, several clinical needs remain unmet. Revelations from single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) performed to determine cell-type heterogeneity and gene expression changes in brain tissue indicated that brain trauma increases the expression of lysine-specific demethylase 1 (LSD1) and secretase 2 (BACE2). To capitalize on this finding, a medicinal chemistry campaign was conducted to pragmatically insert tranylcypromine, an LSD1 inhibitor, into a carefully designed BACE2 inhibitory template (BACE2-IN-1). Additionally, tranylcypromine was structurally modified to enhance the effects of LSD1 inhibition in TBI. As a result, a tractable neuroprotective agent, BACE2-IN-1/tranylcypromine-based compound 4, was identified, showing potential to maintain Neuro-2a cell survival by alleviating mitochondrial damage after oxidative stress. Compound 4 also restored TBI-mediated inhibition of the cholesterol biosynthetic pathway (mevalonate pathway) and damage of redox metabolism, increasing neuroprotective effects. Furthermore, behavioral assays, including nest-building and cognitive performance tests, demonstrated significant improvement in mice post-TBI following treatment with compound 4. Taken together, the outcomes of this study validate the favorable effects of inhibiting LSD1 and beta-secretase in mitigating mitochondrial stress and promoting neurometabolic recovery in TBI. These findings pave the way for the development of rationally designed inhibitors as promising neuroprotective agents, potentially addressing unmet clinical needs in TBI treatment. © 2025 The Authors

COVID-19 lockdowns and associated shocks: Lessons from farming households’ resilience to food and nutrition insecurity in Cameroon

The COVID-19 pandemic posed multifaceted threats to global economies. The lockdowns were exogenous threats to economic activities. This study uses the case of farming households in Cameroon to explore the association between households’ resilience and food and nutrition insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Focus group discussions (FDGs) were conducted to identify the different COVID-19-related shocks and the response strategies implemented by farming households. Information from the FGDs was then exploited to design survey questionnaires. A multistage random sampling procedure identified 249 farming households for an in-depth study. Through econometric modelling techniques, we reveal that COVID-19 shocks adversely affected farming households’ food and nutrition security and reduced households’ resilience capacity. However, existing adaptive capacity and access to basic services significantly contributed to farming households’ resilience. Female-headed and semi-urban farming households were more resilient than male-headed and rural households to COVID-19 shocks. We recommend that policies and interventions that target the enhancement of farming households’ adaptive capacity and improving their access to basic services would be essential for preparedness, response, and swift recovery from unanticipated systemic shocks such as COVID-19. © 2023 The Author(s)

We aimed to investigate the association between air pollution and advanced fibrosis among patients with metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections. A total of 1376 participants who were seropositive for HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) or antibodies to HCV (anti-HCV) or had abnormal liver function in a community screening program from 2019 to 2021 were enrolled for the assessment of liver fibrosis using transient elastography. Daily estimates of air pollutants (particulate matter ≤2.5 μm in diameter [PM_2.5], nitrogen dioxide [NO₂], ozone [O₃] and benzene) were aggregated into mean estimates for the previous year based on the date of enrolment. Of the 1376 participants, 767 (52.8%) and 187 (13.6) had MAFLD and advanced fibrosis, respectively. A logistic regression analysis revealed that the factors associated with advanced liver fibrosis were HCV viremia (odds ratio [OR], 3.13;95% confidence interval [CI], 2.05–4.77;p < 0.001), smoking (OR, 1.79;95% CI, 1.16–2.74;p = 0.01), age (OR, 1.04;95% CI, 1.02–1.05;p < 0.001) and PM_2.5 (OR, 1.10;95% CI, 1.05–1.16;p < 0.001). Linear regression analysis revealed that LSM was independently correlated with PM_2.5 (β: 0.134;95% CI: 0.025, 0.243;p = 0.02). There was a dose-dependent relationship between different fibrotic stages and the PM_2.5 level (the PM_2.5 level in patients with fibrotic stages 0, 1–2 and 3–4: 27.9, 28.4, and 29.3 μg/m³, respectively;trend p < 0.001). Exposure to PM_2.5, as well as HBV and HCV infections, is associated with advanced liver fibrosis in patients with MAFLD. There was a dose-dependent correlation between PM_2.5 levels and the severity of hepatic fibrosis. © 2023 The Authors. Improvement in spatial resolution of remote sensing images will always be a hot-topic since the sharpening of image objects is mandatory for many appications. Even thought image instruments have received great improvements in the recent years, super-resolution techniques are welcome to increase even more the level of quality of the data for further interpretations. In this paper we present a multi-frame super-resolution approach that uses a set of UAV images acquired at the same spot, but with slight different perspectives caused by random fluctuations. The small off-sets between consecutive pixels of the low spatial resolution images are considered at subpixel level to feed an arithmetic system of equations able to produce high resolution pixels, which are the unknowns of the system. The results are soundness and could show visual enhancement. However, further developments is need to in deep undertanding and possible advancement of the designed approach.

Microplastics(MPs)are found worldwide in high abundance,posing a potential threat to *** the ubiquity of MPs in the environment,very little is known about the regional distribution of MPs and underlying factors affecting this distribution in the field,which likely include human activity,but also features of the environment ***,out of a total of 1157 datapoints investigated in 53 Chinese studies,9.68%datapoints were removed as outliers in the heterogeneity *** review revealed that the abundance of MPs was highly *** addition,microplastic(MP)distribution maps based on China demonstrated that the highest abundance of MPs tended to occur near large rivers and central land affected by the intersection of two *** model-fitting and previous studies showed that MP abundance in China was correlated with longitude,agricultural mulching film usage per capita,temperature,and ***,due to the heterogeneity of MPs and the low matching degree between the current environmental data and the sampling points,this pattern was not as evident as reported in any single *** affecting the distribution of MPs can not be captured by linear relationships alone,and systematic selection of suitable environmental factors and further model optimization are needed to explore the cause of MP pollution in ***,this review revealed an uneven distribution of MPs and serves as a reference for model prediction to assess and control plastic pollution in natural soil environments.

The distribution and transmission grids are observing an increased penetration of power electronics in loads and generations. For example, there is increasing interest in integrating in extreme fast charging (XFC) systems for fast charging of electrical vehicles. As these systems are integrated, developing high-fidelity electromagnetic transient model of XFC systems in distribution grids and evaluating their interactions with the power grid would be of significant interest. This model will be utilized for design of XFC systems, to identify upgrades in distribution and/or transmission grids, for planning purposes by transmission planners or operators or owners, among others. It can also be utilized in operations for improved reliable performance of the grid and/or XFC station. The challenge with simulating these models is the high computational complexity introduced by the large number of states present in the system and the time-step needed to simulate the system. In this paper, advanced simulations algorithms are applied to reduce the computational complexity of simulating large-scale XFC systems. The algorithms include numerical stiffness-based segregation, time constant-based segregation, clustering and aggregation on differential algebraic equations (DAEs), and multi-order integration approaches. While the first three algorithms split the matrix that needs to be inverted from a large matrix to much smaller matrices, the final algorithm reduces the computational burden of applying higher-order integration approaches in the complete system. The comparison made in the previous sentence is with respect to use of homogeneous integration approaches used in conventional electromagnetic transient simulators like power systems computer aided design (PSCAD). The approaches mentioned here have resulted in speed-up of 36x in the simulation of a single distribution system with 15 XFCs.

The elastic thermoelectric generator (ETEG) was fabricated by using 27 couples of nBi2Te3 and p-Sb2Te3 bulk thermoelectric materials in size of 3 × 3 × 5 mm3 on silicone substrate and using copper plate for electrodes. It was found that the open circuit voltage shows maximum value of 46.74 mV at temperature difference 13.85 K. External load resistances were apply in the measurement and varies for obtaining the maximum output power. The matched load resistance is 0.22 Ω obtaining maximum power about 3.46 mW at temperature difference difference of 13.85 K. The output power, voltage and current were increased with temperature difference increasing and show maximum values about 35.19 mW, 27.82 mV and 126.36 mA at temperature difference 12.75 K. © 2021 Institute of Physics Publishing. Characterization of genes related to sweetpotato viral disease resistance is critical for understanding plant-pathogen interactions, especially with feathery mottle virus infection. For example, genes encoding eukaryotic translation initiation factor (eIF)4E, its isoforms, eIF(iso)4E, and the cap-binding protein (CBP) in plants, have been implicated in viral infections aside from their importance in protein synthesis. Full-length cDNA encoding these putative eIF targets from susceptible/resistant and unknown hexaploid sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas L. Lam) were amplified based on primers designed from the diploid wild-type relative Ipomoea trifida consensus sequences, and designated IbeIF4E, IbeIF(iso)4E and IbCBP. Comparative analyses following direct-sequencing of PCR-amplified cDNAs versus the cloned cDNA sequences identified multiple homeoalleles: one to four IbeIF4E, two to three IbeIF(iso)4E, and two IbCBP within all cultivars tested. Open reading frames were in the length of 696 bp IbeIF4E, 606 bp IbeIF(iso)4E, and 675 bp IbCBP. The encoded single polypeptide lengths were 232, 202, and 225 amino acids for IbeIF4E, IbeIF(iso)4E, and IbCBP, with a calculated protein molecular mass of 26 kDa, 22.8 kDa, and 25.8 kDa, while their theoretical isoelectric points were 5.1, 5.57, and 6.6, respectively. Although the homeoalleles had similar sequence lengths, single nucleotide polymorphisms and multi-allelic variations were detected within the coding sequences. The multi-sequence alignment performed revealed a 66.9% - 96.7% sequence similarity between the predicted amino acid sequences obtained from the homeoalleles and closely related species. Furthermore, phylogenetic analysis revealed ancestral relationships between the eIF4E homeoalleles and other species. The outcome herein on the eIF4E superfamily and its correlation in sequence variations suggest opportunities to decipher the role of eIF4E in hexaploid sweetpotato feathery mottle virus infection.
