This study examines the application of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) in precast beam-column joints to improve structural performance. The studied joints included both adequately and inadequately reinforced conditions (strong and weak joints), constructed using UHPC and deformed rebars. The strong joints allowed the rebars to reach their yield strength under the design bending moment, effectively transferring loads and maintaining structural integrity during service conditions. These well-detailed joints exhibited ductile failure behavior, which is a desired characteristic in reinforced concrete design. In contrast, the weak joints experienced premature and brittle failures, underscoring the importance of proper detailing and reinforcement length. Finally, a practical design scheme was developed to determine the appropriate rebar lengths in UHPC connections to ensure structural integrity and safety. Overall, the integration of UHPC into precast concrete joints significantly enhanced bond performance, improved load transfer mechanisms, and contributed to more resilient and reliable construction practices. © 2025 The Authors

Banana is a horticulture crop originated from Southeast Asia. Therefore, the genetic diversity of bananas is presumably high in Indonesia. Banana bunchy top disease caused by Banana bunchy top virus (BBTV) has been reported occurred in several regions in Indonesia, especially in the banana cultivation. A survey was conducted in April 2019 in West Java to make documentation on the types of bananas that grow unattended and to monitor BBTV infection. Banana cultivars with various types of genomes was found during the survey, i.e. "Mas", "Uli", and "Rejang"(type AA);"Ambon", "Muli", and "Urang"(type AAA);"Kapas"and "Raja"(type AAB). Besides, wild bananas were also found, i.e."Caukole"in Cianjur and "Tongka Langit"in Tasikmalaya with genome types AAw and T, respectively. Leaf samples from infected plants were collected and taken to the laboratory for detection of BBTV using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. Specific DNA band of BBTV around 240 bp was successfully amplified from all leaf samples using mRepF/mRepR specific primer pairs. The results of this survey indicated that BBTV has spread in the field and has the potential to be a source of disease inoculum if no immediate control efforts are made. © 2021 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Background: Specific natural hazards are associated with increased chronic disease risk. Less is known about the impact of living in regions with elevated natural hazards risk. Objective: We evaluated cross-sectional associations between predicted residential natural hazard risk and CVD-related risk factors. Methods: We used data from the Gulf Long-term Follow-up Study, a prospective cohort enrolled following the Deepwater Horizon disaster (N = 32,608). We evaluated diabetes prevalence among 29,714 participants who provided enrollment data on self-reported physician diagnosis of diabetes. In separate analyses, we evaluated obesity and hypertension using data from 10,727 home visit participants with measured height, weight, and blood pressure. We linked geocoded residential enrollment and home visit addresses to the National Risk Index (NRI, 1960–2020), a monetized risk score that quantifies overall and hazard-specific risk at the census-tract level. Modified Poisson regression estimated prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) for associations between quartiles of overall and natural hazard-specific risks and prevalence of diabetes, hypertension (systolic/diastolic blood pressure ≥ 140/90 mmHg or antihypertensive medication use), and obesity (BMI ≥ 30.0 kg/m2). Results: The highest quartile of overall NRI was associated with hypertension (Q4 vs. Q1 PR:1.16[1.09,1.24]) but not diabetes or obesity. All quartiles of hurricane risk were associated with higher diabetes prevalence (PR1.33 to 1.36). Increasing quartiles of heatwave risk were associated with increasing prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, with PRs 1.23[1.09,1.38], 1.12[1.04,1.19] and 1.09[1.03,1.16] for Q4 vs. Q1, respectively. Conclusion: Residing in areas prone to natural disasters is associated with higher prevalence of key cardiovascular disease risk factors. © 2025

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) operates numerous Arctic and Subarctic installations, including Alaska. Changes to permafrost can threaten critical built infrastructure. It is critical to accurately characterize and compare site conditions in permafrost regions to enable the efficient, cost-effective design and construction of an infrastructure well suited to the permafrost environment and that meets DoD requirements. This report describes three research efforts to establish (1) field investigation approaches for ground ice detection and delineation, (2) methods and modeling for early warning detection of thawing permafrost under infrastructure, and (3) an outline of a decision support system that determines the most applicable foundation design for warming and degrading permafrost. Outcomes of these interrelated efforts address needs to improve construction of DoD mission critical infrastructure on Arctic and Subarctic permafrost terrains. Field investigation processes used systematic methodologies including borehole data and geophysical measurements to effectively characterize subsurface permafrost information. The Permafrost Foundation Decision Support System (PFFDSS) tool implements and logically links field survey information and foundation type assessments. The current version of PFFDSS is designed to be accessible to design-engineers of a broad range of experience, that will reduce the effort and cost, and improve the effectiveness of site assessment.

Recent advances in deep sequencing technologies have revealed that,while less than 2%of the human genome is transcribed into mRNA for protein synthesis,over 80%of the genome is transcribed,leading to the production of large amounts of noncoding RNAs(ncRNAs).It has been shown that ncRNAs,especially long non-coding RNAs(lncRNAs),may play crucial regulatory roles in gene *** one of the first isolated and reported lncRNAs,H19 has gained much attention due to its essential roles in regulating many physiological and/or pathological processes including embryogenesis,development,tumorigenesis,osteogen-esis,and ***,H19 mediates diverse regulatory functions by serving as competing endogenous RNAs(CeRNAs),Igf2/H19 imprinted tandem gene,modular scaffold,cooperating with H19 antisense,and acting directly with other mRNAs or ***,we summarized the current understanding of H19 in embryogenesis and development,cancer development and progression,mesenchymal stem cell lineage-specific differentiation,and metabolic *** discussed the potential regulatory mechanisms underlying H19’s func-tions in those processes although more in-depth studies are warranted to delineate the exact molecular,cellular,epigenetic,and genomic regulatory mechanisms underlying the physiolog-ical and pathological roles of ***,these lines of investigation may lead to the development of novel therapeutics for human diseases by exploiting H19 functions.

Sulfate/nitrate and ammonium/nitrate ratios (SO42-/NO3- and NH4+/NO3-, respectively) have been applied in Mexico as indicators of effectiveness to control acid rain precursors, sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides, as well as to evaluate the contribution of reactive nitrogen either in its reduced or oxidized form. By comparing these indicators among the different sites studied in Mexico, the potential sources of atmospheric emissions can be identified, as well as strengthening the prevention, minimization and control strategies for atmospheric pollution. In Mexico City Metropolitan Area (MCMA), wet atmospheric deposition has been evaluated starting in 2003, through collaboration between the Secretary of the Environment of the Government of Mexico City (SEDEMA) and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). The SEDEMA is responsible for sampling at 16 sampling sites distributed in the MCMA, while UNAM is responsible for the laboratory analysis and interpretation of the information. Results include ratios of 1.5 and 2.5 for SO42-/NO3- and NH4+/NO3- respectively. Wet deposition data from the Gulf of Mexico coast have been studied by UNAM, for "La Mancha" (LM) sampling site, which has been operating since 2003 until now. Others sampling sites located in this region are the "El Tajín" Archaeological Zone (TAJ), "Fortaleza de San Juan de Ulúa" (FSU) and the "Universidad Veracruzana Campus Mocambo" (UVM), which were operated from 2003 to 2006. The obtained results for SO42-/NO3- and NH4+/NO3- ratios were: 4 and 1.3 for LM;3.4 and 0.71 for TAJ;1.9 and 0.58 for SJU and 3.3 and 2.3 for the UVM. From 2017 to 2020, the Port of Veracruz (PV) was operating a sampling site, registering values of 2.9 and 0.82 for SO42-/NO3- and NH4+/NO3- ratios, respectively. An oceanographic research cruise on the Gulf of Mexico was conducted by UNAM and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in 1986. A large language model-assisted education tool to provide feedback on open-ended responses

Open-ended questions are a favored tool among instructors for assessing student understanding and encouraging critical exploration of course material. Providing feedback for such responses is a time-consuming task that can lead to overwhelmed instructors and decreased feedback quality. Many instructors resort to simpler question formats, like multiple-choice questions, which provide immediate feedback but at the expense of personalized and insightful comments. Here, we present a tool that uses large language models (LLMs), guided by instructor-defined criteria, to automate responses to open-ended questions. Our tool delivers rapid personalized feedback, enabling students to quickly test their knowledge and identify areas for improvement. We provide open-source reference implementations both as a web application and as a Jupyter Notebook widget that can be used with instructional coding or math notebooks. With instructor guidance, LLMs hold promise to enhance student learning outcomes and elevate instructional methodologies. © 2023, CC BY-NC-SA.

Cough is a vital defensive reflex for expelling harmful substances from the *** sensory afferents for the cough reflex have been intensively ***,the brain mechanisms underlying the cough reflex remain poorly ***,we developed a paradigm to quantitatively measure cough-like reflexes in *** this paradigm,we found that prodynorphin-expressing(Pdyn+)neurons in the nucleus of the solitary tract(NTS)are critical for capsaicin-induced cough-like *** neurons receive cough-related neural signals from Trpv1+vagal sensory *** activation of Pdyn+NTS neurons triggered respiratory responses resembling cough-like *** the divergent projections of Pdyn+NTS neurons,a glutamatergic pathway projecting to the caudal ventral respiratory group(cVRG),the canonical cough center,was necessary and sufficient for capsaicin-induced cough-like *** results reveal that Pdyn+NTS neurons,as a key neuronal population at the entry point of the vagus nerve to the brainstem,initiate cough-like reflexes in mice.

The Covid-19 global pandemic has represented a challenge for education, which had to migrate to virtual environments. Universities adopted different teaching methods to keep contributing to the growth of the professionals in various fields. In this context, the Biomedical Engineering program of the Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru and the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia had to change or adapt the methodology of the courses included in its curriculum in order to reach the learning objectives. This paper presents a methodology for an innovative approach of simulated scenarios using digital tools for the virtual teaching of Clinical Engineering. The learning results achieved in two semesters of implementation of the methodology, during 2020 and 2021, were measured by means of a survey applied to the students at the end of the course. Obtaining achievement results above 76 % and improvement opportunities that would be useful for the next version of this course and for the replication of the methodology in other universities.

In this work we present the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI) Commission on Volcanic Hazards and Risk (CVHR) Volcanic Hazard Maps Database and the accompanying *** website. Using input from a series of IAVCEI CVHR Working Group on Hazard Mapping workshops, we developed a classification scheme and terminology framework for categorizing, discussing, naming, and searching for hazard maps. ≥ The database and website aim to serve as a resource for the volcanology community to explore how different aspects of hazard map development and design have been addressed in different countries, for different hazard processes, and for different intended purposes and audiences. Additionally, they act as a tool for presenting hazard map options to stakeholder groups and serve as a learning resource that can be incorporated into educational materials and training courses. In this work, we present the database and website, discuss the classification scheme, explore the enormous diversity of hazard maps, and suggest ways that the database and website can be used by the volcanic hazard mapping community. © 2023, This is a U.S. Government work and not under copyright protection in the US;foreign copyright protection may apply.
