Towards a Net Zero Cement: Strategic Policies and Systems Thinking for a Low-Carbon Future

Purpose of Review: The cement industry, responsible for 7–8% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, faces growing pressure to mitigate its environmental impact while maintaining its critical role in global infrastructure and economic development. This report explores comprehensive strategies to decarbonize the sector, emphasizing the integration of innovative technologies, sustainable practices, and robust policy frameworks. Recent Findings: Key technological solutions include carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS);electrification of heat;adoption of alternative fuels;and the utilization of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) such as calcined clays and alternative materials. Additionally, emerging advancements like 3D printing, CO₂ mineralization, and biobased materials promise to revolutionize construction methods while reducing emissions. Policy interventions such as carbon pricing, cap-and-trade systems, research grants, tax incentives, and regulatory standards play a pivotal role in enabling this transition. Demand-side measures, including sustainable construction practices, recycling, and green procurement policies, further drive industry-wide adoption of low-carbon solutions. Summary: Through a systems-thinking approach, this paper advocates for reducing material intensity across all stages of production and design, leveraging circular economy principles, and fostering resilient, low-carbon construction. Highlighting global initiatives, the study offers actionable insights for achieving net-zero targets in the cement industry by aligning stakeholders across the value chain to drive climate action while promoting equity, environmental justice, and economic sustainability. © The Author(s) 2025.

Microseisms at the Gakkel Ridge,Arctic Ocean:Results from the JASMInE ocean bottom seismic experiment

To characterize mid-ocean microseisms in the Arctic Ocean and explore potential seismic ambient noise imprint of Arctic warming,this study analyzes seismic records from nine ocean bottom seismometers(OBSs)deployed along the eastern Gakkel Ridge during the Joint Arctic Scientific Middle-ocean ridge Insight Expedition(JASMIn E)in August *** the period band of single frequency microseisms(10–20 s),typically produced by ocean waves directly impacting coastlines,no prominent spectral peaks are *** the double frequency microseism(DFM)period band(2–10 s),spectral powers are far less energetic than those in the open oceans by approximately 20–40 dB,especially for OBSs deployed off the Gakkel Ridge *** dramatically weak DFMs can be attributed to the presence of the perennial sea-ice cover,which hinders atmosphere-ocean interactions and thus obstructs the generation of *** on polarization analyses of Rayleigh waves and correlations of DFM power and ocean wave height,the weak DFMs recorded on the seafloor likely originate from the northern Barents Sea and adjacent *** an Arctic warming hotspot,the northern Barents Sea is experiencing reduced sea-ice import from the interior Arctic which enhances atmosphere-ocean *** this region,wind-driven waves with highly variable directions as documented by oceanographic data and the presence of the perennial sea-ice cover may promote the formation of wave trains propagating in nearly opposite directions,which nonlinear interactions excite *** DFMs continuously lose power due to seismic attenuation during propagation,becoming so weak that the OBSs deployed off the ridge axis detect no noticeable spectral peaks in the DFM period *** OBSs along the ridge axis,by contrast,reveal more energetic power in the shortperiod DFM band of 2–5 s,which can be attributed to local DFM amplification caused by the thick unconsolidated sediment layer.

A multidisciplinary approach to authentic learning experiences for nature-based solutions design: broadening the monkey cheeks

Students in a Landscape Architecture studio at Thammasat University and an Environmental Engineering class at Asian Institute of technology joined to develop and assess Nature-based Solution designs for a pond/wetland system in peri-urban Bangkok. The Landscape Architecture class first developed their design visions and subsequently their designs were introduced to the Engineering students through on-line presentations and collaborative on-site investigations. The Engineering students used combinations of water quality sampling, static calculations, and application of a conceptual, dynamic urban hydrology model to assess design performance. The Engineering students effectively incorporated some aspects of the architectural designs into their assessments, particularly those related to constructed wetlands for water quality improvement. Application of the dynamic model for water quantity assessments and provision of project cost estimates proved more challenging. Course evaluations indicated that students in both classes gained a better appreciation of the multidisciplinary process necessary for successful water resource planning, but also would prefer even greater interaction between the disciplines. Planned pedagogical improvements, including introduction of Steinitz’ Framework for Theory, are discussed. ©, Engineers Australia.

This study uses Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) and Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) precipitation data to identify extreme precipitation intensity and frequency changes in Indonesia. Extreme precipitation calculations were performed using the Gumbel distribution and return period fitted to annual maxima data. Extreme precipitation and frequency of extreme events were compared between the historical period and the near-future period (2026–2055) and the far-future period (2070–2099) to identify changes. The results showed that there were changes in extreme precipitation in Indonesia both in intensity and frequency of occurrence. Extreme precipitation with a 5-year return period in Indonesia generally has a change value in the range of − 5 to + 25% with most areas likely to increase. The increased value reaches + 20% in the near-future period and + 40% in the far-future period. For the frequency of extreme precipitation above the 5-year return period in Indonesia, the change value is generally in the range of − 40 to + 120% with most areas likely to increase. The increased value reaches + 160% in the near-future period and + 200% in the far-future period. In the higher emission scenario (SSP5-8.5), the areas with higher values of increase will expand both in the change in intensity and frequency of occurrence. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

The problem of flooding in Central Vietnam in general and the lower Ba River in particular is one of the natural disasters that frequently threatens people's lives and socioeconomic development in the ***,climate change is becoming ever more prominent and hotter,making extreme natural disasters more unusual and *** this research,MIKE-FLOOD—a model that connects a 1-dimensional(1-D)MIKE 11 Hydrodynamics(HD)model with a 2-dimensional(2-D)MIKE 21 HD model—was used to set *** model was calculated for three floods:(1)flood in October 1993,(2)flood in November 2003,and(3)flood in November 2007;these are floods with high frequency and relatively large *** results show that the 1993 flood rose and receded *** flood peak inundated an area of 22,600 ha,accounting for 52%of the natural *** flooded areas deeper than 1,2,3,4,and 5m were 16500,11,000,7000,4200,and 2200 ha,*** the center of Tuy Hoa city,the flooded area at the time of maximum water level was almost 100%.

The peri-urban area possesses mixed characteristics of rural and urban areas,i.e.,agricultural,and built-up *** review explains various themes and concepts of peri-urban areas and the importance of peri-urban agriculture(PUA)as an ecosystem service(ES)for their surrounding *** methodological approach is a systematic literature search and explanatory review of books and journal *** focus of the discussion is as follows:(1)quantification of review results,(2)urbanization pressures,peri-urban,and governance,(3)two different concepts about the peri-urban area,(4)protection of PUA and their resilience,and(5)role of PUA in providing ESs to other *** review shows that PUA is more crucial in urban areas than in rural areas in terms of food supply,ecology and biodiversity preservation,disaster mitigation,and *** of the primary causes of PUA loss is massive urban expansion,which entails the conversion of agricultural land in peri-urban areas into built-up ***,we suggest that every country should develop a peri-urban management *** argue that sociocultural biases in PUA have resulted in many institutional constraints on peri-urban management being incorporated within existing political and regulatory frameworks,including planning practices and longstanding laws and regulations.

Avobenzone (AVO) is a sunscreen with high global production and is constantly released into the environment. Incorporating sewage biosolids for fertilization purposes, the leaching from cultivated soils, and the use of wastewater for irrigation explain its presence in the soil. There is a lack of information about the impact of this sunscreen on plants. In the present study, the ecotoxicity of AVO was tested at concentrations 1, 10, 100, and 1,000 ng/L. All concentrations caused a reduction in root growth of Allium cepa, Cucumis sativus, and Lycopersicum esculentum seeds, as well as a mitodepressive effect, changes in the mitotic spindle and a reduction in root growth of A. cepa bulbs. The cell cycle was disturbed because AVO disarmed the enzymatic defense system of root meristems, leading to an accumulation of hydroxyl radicals and superoxides, besides lipid peroxidation in cells. Therefore, AVO shows a high potential to cause damage to plants and can negatively affect agricultural production and the growth of non-cultivated plants. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Peri-urban areas are playing an increasingly crucial role in the agricultural development and intensification in ***-urban agriculture is highly vulnerable to change compared with urban and rural agriculture,due to its location in transitional *** of peri-urban agricultural intensity can help guide regional *** this study,we assessed the sustainability of peri-urban areas based on agricultural intensity in Karawang Regency,*** developed a village-based index to assess the region’s agricultural intensity by rescaling the village agriculture index(VAI)and combining the local sustainability index(LSI)with factor *** the unit of analysis is the village,we modified the LSI to the village sustainability index(VSI).In addition,we also developed a logical matrix analysis to determine the level of agricultural sustainability(LoAS)of each *** combined results of the three indices(VAI,VSI,and LoAS)generated information about agricultural *** results indicated that peri-urban villages with high agricultural intensity tended to exhibit low levels of social welfare,economic development,and disaster ***,high agricultural intensity did not necessarily ensure the prosperity of the ***,there was the economic disparity among the villages in the study *** diversity of agricultural intensity seems to be more critical than promoting agricultural intensity ***,this study highlights the distinctive characteristics and dynamic of peri-urban *** approaches,variables,and information regarding the combination of agricultural intensity and sustainability need to be developed as valuable tools for regional planning.

Hindcast of oil spill pollution in the East China Sea in January 2018

In this study, an integrated model is developed for studying the Sanchi oil spill event, which occurred in the East China Sea in January 2018. The results of the Advanced Research Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF-ARW) as well as the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) are used for meteorological forecasting and the hydrodynamic simulations, respectively. These data are adopted as inputs for the OpenOil, a sub-module of OpenDrift, for the oil spill model. Some reference experiments are examined for short-term hindcast. The satellite image is used to validate the numerical result. The oil slicks of the satellite image and the numerical result are of similar shapes. Quantitatively, the simulated oil slick and that from the satellite image are located closely and have similar dimensions of 56 km by 34 km and 54 km by 29 km, respectively. It is found that the accurate results can be obtained by the proposed integrated model with the high-frequency (hourly) and high-spatial-resolution data as inputs, and the wind drift factor has to be added. The long-term 1-month simulation showed that most of the oil particles would move to the northeast of the sinking location and be trapped by the Kuroshio current. © IMechE 2023.

Plasticrusts manifest as a coating on intertidal rocks due to environmental exposure. They refer to crushed plastic debris that blankets rocks found along intertidal shorelines. This study significantly contributes to a better understanding of the occurrence of these novel plastic formations, shedding light on their potential pathways of formation during the Anthropocene era. The research provides comprehensive insights into the composition, origins, challenges, and effective management strategies for removing coastal plastic litter. The findings of this investigation offer valuable evidence regarding the formation and impact of these recently discovered plastic items in coastal regions, prompting discussions about their formation processes and their effects on the marine ecosystem. Recognizing that these newly emerged plastic litter pose a considerable threat to the marine environment is crucial. With their emergence, we face an environmental challenge, especially concerning the health of coastal ecosystems. Plasticrusts, when degraded, can release microplastics (MPs) and nanoparticles (NPs) into the surrounding environment. These micro- and nano-sized plastic particles pose significant ecological risks as they persist in ecosystems, potentially harming wildlife and entering the food chain, causing widespread environmental contamination. Significantly, it outlines strategies to minimize the impact of this emerging plastic debris and its source. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
