Separation of microalgae from bacterial contaminants using spiral microchannel in the presence of a chemoattractant

Cell separation using microfluidics has become an effective method to isolate biological contaminants from bodily fluids and cell cultures,such as isolating bacteria contaminants from microalgae cultures and isolating bacteria contaminants from white blood *** this study,bacterial cells were used as a model contaminant in microalgae culture in a passive microfluidics device,which relies on hydrodynamic forces to demonstrate the separation of microalgae from bacteria contaminants in U and W-shaped cross-section spiral microchannel fabricated by defocusing CO_(2) laser *** a flow rate of 0.7 ml/min in the presence of glycine as bacteria chemoattractant,the spiral microfluidics devices with U and W-shaped cross-sections were able to isolate microalgae(Desmodesmus sp.)from bacteria(***)with a high separation efficiency of 92%and 96%*** the same flow rate,in the absence of glycine,the separation efficiency of microalgae for U-and W-shaped cross-sections was 91%and 96%,*** was found that the spiral microchannel device with a W-shaped cross-section with a barrier in the center of the channel showed significantly higher separation *** microchannel chips with U-or W-shaped cross-sections were easy to fabricate and exhibited high *** these advantages,these devices could be widely applicable to other cell separation applications,such as separating circulating tumor cells from blood.

Indonesia has entered a period of demographic bonus. Human resources must be optimized. The number of children who do not in employment, education or training (NEET) in each province needs attention. Several factors that could contribute to the decline in the NEET percentage are literacy rates and the number of adolescents with computer skills. Increasing these two factors is believed to be able to reduce the percentage of NEET in every province in Indonesia. To find out the relationship between these two factors and how much influence they have on the percentage of NEET, this research is modeled by Cauchy regression and includes spatial effects. The results of the analysis show that the best model is when the spatial effect is modeled by Fernandez Steel Skew Normal conditionally autoregressive (FSSN CAR). This result is seen from the smallest value of the Watanabe Akaike Information Criterion (WAIC) in this model, which is 190.5. The parameter estimated shows that the higher the literacy rate and the number of adolescents with computer skills, the lower the percentage of NEET in each province in Indonesia. The results of this research can be useful for the Indonesian government to increase the number of educational facilities related to these two factors. © (2024), (International Association of Engineers). This paper introduces a novel, computationally efficient, random-search based path-planning algorithm specifically designed to enhance the dexterous accessibility of autonomous lunar rovers operating on highly cluttered obstacle-dense planetary surfaces. The proposed pathplanning framework employs a Quadtree-based cell decomposition to enhance the performance of sampling-based path-planning algorithms, specifically those in the category of Rapidlyexploring Random Trees (RRT) and its optimized variant, RRT*. In the process of generating the path through an occupancy grid map, the obstacle-free cells are utilized as discrete sampling points for the RRT* algorithm. A unique non-uniform sampling approach is employed to favour larger cells with a higher degree of safety, thereby enabling seamless navigation through the obstacle-dense map. Additionally, the non-uniform sampling approach enhances the overall computational efficiency of the framework, making it suitable for fast, lightweight onboard implementation. The efficacy of the proposed planning framework is demonstrated through numerous simulation scenarios. © 2025, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. All rights reserved.

sEMG-based Sarcopenia risk classification using empirical mode decomposition and machine learning algorithms

Early detection of the risk of sarcopenia at younger ages is crucial for implementing preventive strategies, fostering healthy muscle development, and minimizing the negative impact of sarcopenia on health and aging. In this study, we propose a novel sarcopenia risk detection technique that combines surface electromyography (sEMG) signals and empirical mode decomposition (EMD) with machine learning algorithms. First, we recorded and preprocessed sEMG data from both healthy and at-risk individuals during various physical activities, including normal walking, fast walking, performing a standard squat, and performing a wide squat. Next, electromyography (EMG) features were extracted from a normalized EMG and its intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) were obtained through EMD. Subsequently, a minimum redundancy maximum relevance (mRMR) feature selection method was employed to identify the most influential subset of features. Finally, the performances of state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) classifiers were evaluated using a leave-one-subject-out cross-validation technique, and the effectiveness of the classifiers for sarcopenia risk classification was assessed through various performance metrics. The proposed method shows a high accuracy, with accuracy rates of 0.88 for normal walking, 0.89 for fast walking, 0.81 for a standard squat, and 0.80 for a wide squat, providing reliable identification of sarcopenia risk during physical activities. Beyond early sarcopenia risk detection, this sEMG-EMD-ML system offers practical values for assessing muscle function, muscle health monitoring, and managing muscle quality for an improved daily life and well-being. © 2024 American Institute of Mathematical sciences. Conventional approaches to Federated Deep Reinforcement Learning (FDRL) often mandate the participation of all the associated devices and perform indiscriminate aggregation of the models. This can, at times, culminate in a low-performance global model being pumped back to the devices causing a setback in the performances of all the local models. Aggregation should thus, be performed judiciously based on the model performance. Unlike offline Reinforcement Learning (RL) setups, when datasets and ground truths are unavailable and data needs to be gathered in real-time, defining a suitable metric for the model performance, can be challenging. In this paper, we propose a novel Immuno-inspired approach for Selective Aggregation suitable for decentralized FDRL (dFDRL) that can act as a metric for the performance of a model based on which the decision to aggregate could be made. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Fine Tuning Attribute Weighted Naïve Bayes (FTAWNB) is a reliable modified Naïve Bayes model. Even though it is able to provide high accuracy on ordinal data, this model is sensitive to outliers. To improve the performance of FTAWNB, this research modified the Partial Instances Reduction (PIR) technique to make the FTAWNB more adaptive to outliers. Nevertheless, in contrast to the original PIR technique, which substitutes missing values for data values deemed outliers, the PIR technique suggested in this study replaces data values deemed outliers using a Naïve Bayes weighting approach. The attribute values from the outlier data are replaced with the highest probability values for the attributes in the actual class. This PIR technique is referred to as modified PIR. The FTAWNB model with modified PIR has been evaluated using the Gaming Disorder dataset. Replacing the four attributes with the least amount of information resulted in accuracy gains of 99.74%, an increase of 1.53% over the FTAWNB model. The experimental result shows that adding the modified PIR technique to the FTAWNB model can handle the outlier in the data, proving it by increasing the performance in terms of accuracy, precision, and recall without pruning the dataset used. © 2025, Ital Publication. Data acquisition systems are commonplace in the current era of digitalization and Industry 4.0. These systems are typically used to obtain data from sensors, whether analog or digital, which is then stored for processing in subsequent stages. However, the implementation of hardware for creating data acquisition systems can be challenging due to constraints such as laboratory facilities, budget limitations, and other factors. Therefore, in this research, SimulIDE simulation software was employed to simulate electronic components and the Arduino Uno. To make this virtual Arduino appear as a physical one to the host computer, PyVirtualSerialPorts was used as a virtual serial port. The data acquisition system was created using Python programming with several key features: it can store data in CSV format, present data plots and graphs, and display the frequency spectrum of signals. The system achieved a sampling speed of 1000 data points per second, with input signals limited to a maximum of 10 Hz. This study also shows that signal distortion can occur due to excessively frequent data plotting and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) processing. Therefore, the use of SimulIDE simulator, virtual serial port, and Python can be utilized in the learning process of a simple data acquisition system. © 2023 IEEE.

Robust Graph Autoencoder-Based Detection of False Data Injection Attacks Against Data Poisoning in Smart Grids

Machine learning-based detection of false data injection attacks (FDIAs) in smart grids relies on labeled measurement data for training and testing. The majority of existing detectors are developed assuming that the adopted datasets for training have correct labeling information. However, such an assumption is not always valid as training data might include measurement samples that are incorrectly labeled as benign, namely, adversarial data poisoning samples, which have not been detected before. Neglecting such an aspect makes detectors susceptible to data poisoning. Our investigations revealed that detection rates (DRs) of existing detectors significantly deteriorate by up to 9-29% when subject to data poisoning in generalized and topology-specific settings. Thus, we propose a generalized graph neural network-based anomaly detector that is robust against FDIAs and data poisoning. It requires only benign datasets for training and employs an autoencoder with Chebyshev graph convolutional recurrent layers with attention mechanism to capture the spatial and temporal correlations within measurement data. The proposed convolutional recurrent graph autoencoder model is trained and tested on various topologies (from 14, 39, and 118-bus systems). Due to such factors, it yields stable generalized detection performance that is degraded by only 1.6-3.7% in DR against high levels of data poisoning and unseen FDIAs in unobserved topologies. Impact Statement-Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems are used in smart grids to detect cyberattacks. They can automatically detect malicious actions carried out bymalicious entities that falsifymeasurement data within power grids. Themajority of such systems are data-driven and rely on labeled data for model training and testing. Global trading is undergoing significant changes, necessitating modifications to the trading strategies. This study presents a newly developed cloud-based trading strategy that uses Amazon Web Services (AWS), machine learning (ML), and data science to automate trading tasks. The study begins by creating a machine learning trading strategy using a customized deep neural network (DNN). The strategy was then tested using a trading station before deployment on a cloud machine. The execution of the strategy resulted in a total profit of 42.74526 USD, with a test accuracy score of 87.45% and a training accuracy score of 89.15% over 6047 epochs. The roadmap provides a step-by-step overview of the entire process from strategy development to execution. In addition, this study offers insights into related issues and solutions that can enhance the effectiveness of trading strategies. Overall, this study contributes significantly to the field of cloud-based trading strategies and opens avenues for future research. © 2013 IEEE.
