Effects of an automated programming assessment system on the learning performances of experienced and novice learners

programming ability is the core ability of this era and can be obtained and improved through practice. In this paper, an Automated programming Assessment system based on Mastery learning and Peer competition (APAMP) was proposed and developed. APAMP allows students to practice repeatedly by providing immediate feedback after their programs are submitted. It also presents an analytical dashboard as a competition mechanism for students to visualize their learning performance and compare their performance with peers. By incorporating APAMP into programming courses, students can master programming skills through repeated practice, and their enthusiasm for learning programming can also be encouraged by peer competition. To evaluate the effects of APAMP on the learning performance of students with programming language learning and novice students, a quasi-experiment was conducted in a high school. The experimental results showed that the learning achievement of the two groups of students improved significantly. Moreover, the learning attitude of students in the experienced group improved significantly, with the experienced students benefiting more from the system than the novice students. In fact, the novice students showed a significant decline in learning attitude and learning motivation, which was contrary to our intuition. © 2021 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Autonomous robotic re-alignment for face-to-face underwater human-robot interaction

The use of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to accomplish traditionally challenging and dangerous tasks has proliferated thanks to advances in sensing, navigation, manipulation, and on-board computing technologies. Utilizing AUVs in underwater human-robot interaction (UHRI) has witnessed comparatively smaller levels of growth due to limitations in bi-directional communication and significant technical hurdles to bridge the gap between analogies with terrestrial interaction strategies and those that are possible in the underwater domain. A necessary component to support UHRI is establishing a system for safe robotic-diver approach to establish face-to-face communication that considers nonstandard human body pose. In this work, we introduce a stereo vision system for enhancing UHRI that utilizes three-dimensional reconstruction from stereo image pairs and machine learning for localizing human joint estimates. We then establish a convention for a coordinate system that encodes the direction the human is facing with respect to the camera coordinate frame. This allows automatic setpoint computation that preserves human body scale and can be used as input to an image-based visual servo control scheme. We show that our setpoint computations tend to agree both quantitatively and qualitatively with experimental setpoint baselines. IT/OT convergence in the form of a Cyber-Physical System (CPS) presents an opportunity to apply recent Information Technology (IT) advancements to Operational Technology (OT). The IT/OT convergence introduces cyber security threats for OT. The OT communication protocols, for example, have limited or no security capabilities for securing data exchange beyond basic authentication. The RNG (Random Number Generator) function is crucial in PLC for producing the encryption keys or the initial seed for security algorithms. The software-based PRNG (Pseudo RNG) is the most common approach for RNG in OT, instead of hardware-based RNG. This study provides a systematic literature review of the most recent evidence in digital transformation to secure data exchange in smart factories, within OT, or across OT and IT settings. It does this by looking at the PRNG on PLC and identifying the most recent trends and best practices. The findings include up-to-date data on author countries' distribution, published journals, research trends, industries, and industry types. The findings also address whether data flow is encrypted or shared in plaintext to ensure secure data transfer between IT and legacy OT environments. This paper concludes that while there is known RNG implementation in the actual embedded system in ICS, there is no evidence in the literature for using RNG in ICS networks for PLC implementation to secure data transfer with encryption.

Sampling-Based Model Predictive Control for Dexterous Manipulation on a Biomimetic Tendon-Driven Hand

Biomimetic and compliant robotic hands offer the potential for human-like dexterity, but controlling them is challenging due to high dimensionality, complex contact interactions, and uncertainties in state estimation. Sampling-based model predictive control (MPC), using a physics simulator as the dynamics model, is a promising approach for generating contact-rich behavior. However, sampling-based MPC has yet to be evaluated on physical (non-simulated) robotic hands, particularly on compliant hands with state uncertainties. We present the first successful demonstration of in-hand manipulation on a physical biomimetic tendon-driven robot hand using sampling-based MPC. While sampling-based MPC does not require lengthy training cycles like reinforcement learning approaches, it still necessitates adapting the task-specific objective function to ensure robust behavior execution on physical hardware. To adapt the objective function, we integrate a visual language model (VLM) with a real-time optimizer (MuJoCo MPC). We provide the VLM with a high-level human language description of the task, and a video of the hand’s current behavior. The VLM gradually adapts the objective function, allowing for efficient behavior generation, with each iteration taking less than two minutes. In our experiments, the hand achieves an average ball rolling speed of 0.35 rad/s, successful ball flips, and catching with a 67% success rate. Our results demonstrate that sampling-based MPC is a promising approach for generating dexterous manipulation skills on biomimetic hands without extensive training cycles. © 2024, CC BY.

A substantial number of people are presently making use of decentralised cryptocurrencies that are built on blockchain technology. These crypto currencies have garnered a lot of interest over the course of the last few years and are currently being used by their users. Being the first use of blockchain technology, Bitcoin has been a resounding success, which drives further research and improvement in the sector concerned with blockchain technology. Bitcoin was the first usage of blockchain technology. Bitcoin, on the other hand, is susceptible to significant performance issues due to the fact that it has a high transaction latency and a limited throughput. The operations of the cryptocurrency are considerably impacted as a result of these concerns. As a result of the fact that other cryptocurrencies that rely on proof-of-work also carry over its deficiencies, there has been an increase in the number of concerns about the scalability of blockchain technology. The fact that this is the case makes scaling blockchain technology more challenging. All during the course of this investigation, an effort is made to analyse and classify the various scaling mechanisms that are now being used for blockchains. In addition to this, we are going to look at a variety of various approaches and present a list of possible solutions to the issue of scalability that the blockchain technology is now dealing. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper investigates the classification of low probability of intercept (LPI) radar signals by exploiting the intrinsic advantages of the Vision Transformer (ViT). Due to the characteristics of LPI radar signals, such as intrapulse modulation, wide frequency bands, and low transmission power, these signals are challenging to be detected and classified using traditional analytic methods. This has led to the adoption of various deep learning techniques to overcome these limitations. On the one hand, the ViT, originally developed for natural language processing, has demonstrated outstanding performance in computer vision by replacing the structure of the convolutional neural network (CNN) with the transformer, specifically leveraging self-attention. Therefore, this paper explores a method based on the ViT technique for classifying LPI signal images. The simulation results show that the proposed ViT method outperforms the traditional CNN method by 12.8% at -10dB SNR. © 2023 IEEE.

Acute intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) entity accounts for 10 to 15% of all strokes and is associated with a higher mortality rate ischemic stroke or subarachnoid hemorrhage. Causes of ICH are divided into primary, and secondary, including vascular malformation and tumorous. Primary ICH accounts for approximately 80% of all ICH cases. Vascular anomalies rank as the second most common cause of spontaneous ICH overall. Furthermore, hemorrhage resulting from brain tumors can occur in up to 10% of all primary or metastatic tumors. Early recognizing of these three causes of bleeding is critical for clinicians in precise diagnosis, effective treatment management, and helps avoid delayed diagnosis. We proposed a radiomics approach for classifying multiple causes of acute ICH as vascular malformation, tumorous, and primary-related hematoma. Non-contrast brain computed tomography with clinical features was used as input. The regions of both hematoma and perihematomal edema were delineated by using manual segmentation approach. Four feature selection methods were adopted. Also, three classification models were investigated in this study. The results showed that using the features selected by F-value applied with SVM classifier outperformed the other models, achieving weighted average accuracy (± SD) of 0.84 (± 0.07). Additionally, the model demonstrated average sensitivity and positive predictive value of 0.84 (± 0.06) and 0.86 (± 0.05), respectively. We also evaluate the overall performance of discriminating each class from the rest using AUC. The result suggested that our proposed model achieved the weighted average AUC of 0.90. Our proposed method highlights the potential in identifying multiple causes of acute and nontraumatic ICH, which has not been previously explored. © 2023 IEEE.

Automation in surgical robotics has the potential to improve patient safety and surgical efficiency, but it is difficult to achieve due to the need for robust perception algorithms. In particular, 6D pose estimation of surgical instruments is critical to enable the automatic execution of surgical maneuvers based on visual feedback. In recent years, supervised deep learning algorithms have shown increasingly better performance at 6D pose estimation tasks; yet, their success depends on the availability of large amounts of annotated data. In household and industrial settings, synthetic data, generated with 3D computer graphics software, has been shown as an alternative to minimize annotation costs of 6D pose datasets. However, this strategy does not translate well to surgical domains as commercial graphics software have limited tools to generate images depicting realistic instrument-tissue interactions. To address these limitations, we propose an improved simulation environment for surgical robotics that enables the automatic generation of large and diverse datasets for 6D pose estimation of surgical instruments. Among the improvements, we developed an automated data generation pipeline and an improved surgical scene. To show the applicability of our system, we generated a dataset of 7.5k images with pose annotations of a surgical needle that was used to evaluate a state-of-the-art pose estimation network. The trained model obtained a mean translational error of 2.59mm on a challenging dataset that presented varying levels of occlusion. These results highlight our pipeline’s success in training and evaluating novel vision algorithms for surgical robotics applications.

Robotic additive manufacturing has the potential to replace traditional production techniques with more flexible, capable and efficient methods. However, this potential has not yet been realized due to the intrinsic physical limitations of extruders. Thus improved speed and efficiency lies in coordinated fabrication by multiple extruders. In this paper, we propose a framework for utilizing multiple extruders to collaboratively fabricate objects in a shared workspace. In contrast to related work, we make use of a Reeb decomposition method of the input model, which dramatically reduces the search space over feasible toolpaths but still results in highly effective allocation of model components to each extruder. We demonstrate superior performance of our approach in simulation as well as in hardware with a two-robot arm extruder system. When compared to a single extruder approach over a benchmark of 14 models, our method achieves a mean improvement of 72% in extruder utilization. When compared to two additional toolpath planning methods for multiple extruders, only our method is able to successfully complete a valid toolpath on all models. Prior methods fail on more than half of our benchmark due to reaching deadlocked states during toolpath planning. On the models for which all methods succeed, our approach achieves mean utilization improvements of 132% over zone-blocking and 12% over contour greedy. We demonstrate that our approach is also suitable for models with non-planar slicings, which yield further improvements in extruder utilization.
