Enhancing Taiwanese Hokkien Dual Translation by Exploring and Standardizing of Four Writing Systems

Machine translation focuses mainly on high-resource languages (HRLs), while low-resource languages (LRLs) like Taiwanese Hokkien are relatively under-explored. The study aims to address this gap by developing a dual translation model between Taiwanese Hokkien and both Traditional Mandarin Chinese and English. We employ a pre-trained LLaMA 2-7B model specialized in Traditional Mandarin Chinese to leverage the orthographic similarities between Taiwanese Hokkien Han and Traditional Mandarin Chinese. Our comprehensive experiments involve translation tasks across various writing systems of Taiwanese Hokkien as well as between Taiwanese Hokkien and other HRLs. We find that the use of a limited monolingual corpus still further improves the model’s Taiwanese Hokkien capabilities. We then utilize our translation model to standardize all Taiwanese Hokkien writing systems into Hokkien Han, resulting in further performance improvements. Additionally, we introduce an evaluation method incorporating back-translation and GPT-4 to ensure reliable translation quality assessment even for LRLs. The study contributes to narrowing the resource gap for Taiwanese Hokkien and empirically investigates the advantages and limitations of pre-training and fine-tuning based on LLaMA 2. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

The cyber-physical production system (CPPS) was developed for the interconnection between operational technology (OT) and information and communication technology (ICT) among the machines and decentralized production control. However, OT and ICT are now getting more complex in the modern industry. To enhance industrial management and production process, the CPPS based on the 5G architecture under production environments can provide a more comprehensive solution in the context of Industry 4.0. For this purpose, a 5G CPPS model to improve the interoperability of CPPS in ICT and OT is proposed to build a virtualized Industry 4.0 asset management shell system. First, real-time task artifacts and 5G communication modules are bound in a certain form of virtualization. Second, task artifacts are released to the production line in a real-time scheduling. Third, an order is placed on a production line and split into multiple tasks for production process. Single-machine single-workpiece and multi-machine and multi-workpiece processing cases are used for testing in the production line. Experimental results show that the proposed 5G CPPS can efficiently achieve multi-machine work piece processing. © 2022, The Author(s).

We have previously reported spontanous formation of InGaN/GaN superlattice structure on nominal InGaN films grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE). In this work, we report on the impact of In flux on the formation and periodicity of self-assembled InxGa1-xN/InyGa1-yN superlattice structure (SASL). We show that the thickness and In composition in the InGaN layer varies by changing the In flux. These films were stucturally characterized by X-ray diffraction and simulated by globalfit software to get the thickness and In composition. The superlattice structures were confimred by scanning transmission electron microscopy and the thickness of InGaN layer and In composition were determined by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. This work can provide a method for using the SASL with better control for their optoelectronics application. © 2022 IEEE.

Vector maps are essential in autonomous driving for tasks like localization and planning, yet their creation and maintenance are notably costly. While recent advances in online vector map generation for autonomous vehicles are promising, current models lack adaptability to different sensor configurations. They tend to overfit to specific sensor poses, leading to decreased performance and higher retraining costs. This limitation hampers their practical use in real-world applications. In response to this challenge, we propose a modular pipeline for vector map generation with improved generalization to sensor configurations. The pipeline leverages probabilistic semantic mapping to generate a bird’s-eye-view (BEV) semantic map as an intermediate representation. This intermediate representation is then converted to a vector map using the MapTRv2 decoder. By adopting a BEV semantic map robust to different sensor configurations, our proposed approach significantly improves the generalization performance. We evaluate the model on datasets with sensor configurations not used during training. Our evaluation sets includes larger public datasets, and smaller scale private data collected on our platform. Our model generalizes significantly better than the state-of-the-art methods. The code will be available at https://***/AutonomousVehicleLaboratory/SemVecNet.

As robotic systems such as autonomous cars and delivery drones assume greater roles and responsibilities within society, the likelihood and impact of catastrophic software failure within those systems is increased. To aid researchers in the development of new methods to measure and assure the safety and quality of robotics software, we systematically curated a dataset of 221 bugs across 7 popular and diverse software systems implemented via the Robot Operating System (ROS). We produce historically accurate recreations of each of the 221 defective software versions in the form of Docker images, and use a grounded theory approach to examine and categorize their corresponding faults, failures, and fixes. Finally, we reflect on the implications of our findings and outline future research directions for the community. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

Robust depth perception in visually-degraded environments is crucial for autonomous aerial systems. Thermal imaging cameras, which capture infrared radiation, are robust to visual degradation. However, due to lack of a large-scale dataset, the use of thermal cameras for unmanned aerial system (UAS) depth perception has remained largely unexplored. This paper presents a stereo thermal depth perception dataset for autonomous aerial perception applications. The dataset consists of stereo thermal images, LiDAR, IMU and ground truth depth maps captured in urban and forest settings under diverse conditions like day, night, rain, and smoke. We benchmark representative stereo depth estimation algorithms, offering insights into their performance in degraded conditions. Models trained on our dataset generalize well to unseen smoky conditions, highlighting the robustness of stereo thermal imaging for depth perception. We aim for this work to enhance robotic perception in disaster scenarios, allowing for exploration and operations in previously unreachable areas. As cloud computing usage grows, cloud data centers play an increasingly important role. To maximize resource utilization, ensure service quality, and enhance system performance, it is crucial to allocate tasks and manage performance effectively. The purpose of this study is to provide an extensive analysis of task allocation and performance management techniques employed in cloud data centers. The aim is to systematically categorize and organize previous research by identifying the cloud computing methodologies, categories, and gaps. A literature review was conducted, which included the analysis of 463 task allocations and 480 performance management papers. The review revealed three task allocation research topics and seven performance management methods. Task allocation research areas are resource allocation, load-Balancing, and scheduling. Performance management includes monitoring and control, power and energy management, resource utilization optimization, quality of service management, fault management, virtual machine management, and network management. The study proposes new techniques to enhance cloud computing work allocation and performance management. Short-comings in each approach can guide future research. The research's findings on cloud data center task allocation and performance management can assist academics, practitioners, and cloud service providers in optimizing their systems for dependability, cost-effectiveness, and scalability. Patent intellectual property in social informatics with entrepreneurship support creates greater opportunities to improve human life. It has the potential to open enormous innovation opportunities in various fields, such as technology, health, services, and society. This research was conducted to review the patent landscape and the main trends of patents on social informatics in all countries. Researchers applied a patent landscape analysis using data on 487 patent documents over 16 years from the *** database. The study results show yearly patented development patterns related to social informatics. There is a royalty-free opportunity by using 15 patent discontinued. Patent related to social informatics was dominated by company ownership and inventors from the United States. The patent physics (G) section overwhelmed patents related to social informatics. There were 334 simple family patents on social informatics in nine jurisdictions;the United States was the highest. © 2023 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Three-dimensional (3D) profile by Digital Holographic Microscopy (DHM) always contains noise. This is an issue in the phase information extraction method of DHM system. However, in the conventional phase information extraction from the frequency domain, it may not extract only phase information. To solve this problem, we propose that the extracting phase information from the frequency domain of recorded hologram using DHM system is specified multiple times and Kalman filtering is performed on the multiple 3D profiles. The purpose of this method is to eliminate randomly generated noise and generate highly accurate 3D profiles. The generated 3D profile is subjectively and quantitatively evaluated with conventional methods. As a result, 3D profile of the proposed method shows the higher accuracy than the conventional method.
