Sensing technologies and machine learning methods for emotion recognition in autism: Systematic review

Background: Human Emotion Recognition (HER) has been a popular field of study in the past years. Despite the great progresses made so far, relatively little attention has been paid to the use of HER in autism. People with autism are known to face problems with daily social communication and the prototypical interpretation of emotional responses, which are most frequently exerted via facial expressions. This poses significant practical challenges to the application of regular HER systems, which are normally developed for and by neurotypical people. Objective: This study reviews the literature on the use of HER systems in autism, particularly with respect to sensing technologies and machine learning methods, as to identify existing barriers and possible future directions. Methods: We conducted a systematic review of articles published between January 2011 and June 2023 according to the 2020 PRISMA guidelines. Manuscripts were identified through searching Web of science and Scopus databases. Manuscripts were included when related to emotion recognition, used sensors and machine learning techniques, and involved children with autism, young, or adults. Results: The search yielded 346 articles. A total of 65 publications met the eligibility criteria and were included in the review. Conclusions: Studies predominantly used facial expression techniques as the emotion recognition method. Consequently, video cameras were the most widely used devices across studies, although a growing trend in the use of physiological sensors was observed lately. Happiness, sadness, anger, fear, disgust, and surprise were most frequently addressed. Classical supervised machine learning techniques were primarily used at the expense of unsupervised approaches or more recent deep learning models. Studies focused on autism in a broad sense but limited efforts have been directed towards more specific disorders of the spectrum. In post-disaster search and rescue (SAR) missions, it is crucial for robots to distinguish between actual victims and dummy objects, despite their similar characteristics. Edge video analytics have demonstrated exceptional performance in such missions, however, the trade-off between high-performing deep learning models and computational complexity often results in inadequate computational efficiency for SAR robotics. This study tackles this challenge by deploying a deep learning (DL) algorithm, i.e., MobileNet Single Shot Detector (SSD), specifically tailored for embedded systems, to perform object detection and classification tasks on lab-scale SAR robots. The proposed algorithm is developed in Python and implemented on a low-powered edge computing device. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in object localization is highlighted by its mAP score of 0.6247 and an average IoU of 0.9036. Experimental tests using a confusion matrix showed that the model accurately predicted 42 dummy objects and 43 victim dolls. The model achieved an overall accuracy of 89.47%, with a precision of 1.0, a recall of 0.8947, and an F1 Score of 0.9444. Real-time testing confirmed the model's robust performance, maintaining high accuracy and a stable frame rate of 47 FPS. These findings corroborate the efficacy of the MobileNet SSD algorithm in reliably detecting and differentiating objects within embedded SAR robotic operations.

In the modern digital environment, securing data privacy has become increasingly critical as organizations confront rising threats from cyber-attacks and data breaches. To safeguard sensitive information, businesses must invest in robust data protection measures, yet balancing these investments with their potential benefits remains challenging. This research addresses this issue by proposing a novel framework that integrates Return on Investment (RoI) and Value of Information (VoI) within a Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) to assess data privacy risks effectively. RoI measures the financial return relative to the cost of data protection investments, indicating the economic value derived from such measures. VoI, on the other hand, evaluates the worth of the information protected by these investments, reflecting its impact on decision-making and operational efficiency. By employing a FIS, which accommodates uncertainties and imprecise data, this framework provides a nuanced approach to risk assessment, enabling organizations to optimize their data privacy strategies. The integration of RoI and VoI within the FIS allows for a comprehensive evaluation of risk levels, facilitating more informed decision-making and improved risk management. This research aims to enhance data privacy practices by offering a methodical and adaptable tool for evaluating and balancing investments in data protection.

Pneumatic soft robots are typically fabricated by molding, a manual fabrication process that requires skilled labor. Additive manufacturing has the potential to break this limitation and speed up the fabrication process but struggles with consistently producing high-quality prints. We propose a low-cost approach to improve the print quality of desktop fused deposition modeling by adding a webcam to the printer to monitor the printing process and detect and correct defects such as holes or gaps. We demonstrate that our approach improves the air-tightness of printed pneumatic actuators while reducing the need for fine-tuning printing parameters. Our approach presents a new option for robustly fabricating airtight, soft robotic actuators.

Species interaction networks are a powerful tool for describing ecological communities;they typically contain nodes representing species, and edges representing interactions between those species. For the purposes of drawing abstract inferences about groups of similar networks, ecologists often use graph topology metrics to summarize structural features. However, gathering the data that underlies these networks is challenging, which can lead to some interactions being missed. Thus, it is important to understand how much different structural metrics are affected by missing data. To address this question, we analyzed a database of 148 real-world bipartite networks representing four different types of species interactions (pollination, host-parasite, plant-ant, and seed-dispersal). For each network, we measured six different topological properties: number of connected components, variance in node betweenness, variance in node PageRank, largest Eigenvalue, the number of non-zero Eigenvalues, and community detection as determined by four different algorithms. We then tested how these properties change as additional edges – representing data that may have been missed – are added to the networks. We found substantial variation in how robust different properties were to the missing data. For example, the Clauset-Newman-Moore and Louvain community detection algorithms showed much more gradual change as edges were added than the label propagation and Girvan-Newman algorithms did, suggesting that the former are more robust. Robustness also varied for some metrics based on interaction type. The unconditioned reflex (e.g., protective reflex), which is the innate reaction of the organism and usually performed through the spinal cord rather than the brain, can enable organisms to escape harms from environments. Accordingly, it is essential to endow robots the highly-dynamic unconditioned reflexes to humans and/or environments, such that it can work collaboratively with humans or serve people in daily life. Although various sampling-based and optimization-based motion planning methods have been developed for robots, their limited computational speed is not suitable for rapid motion planning in highly-dynamic environments. In this paper, we propose an online, highly-dynamic motion planning algorithm to enable highly-dynamic unconditioned reflexes for manipulators. Our method is based on a chained version of Signed Distance Functions (SDFs), which can be pre-computed and stored. Our proposed algorithm is divided into two stages. In the offline stage, we create 3 groups of local SDFs to store the geometric information of the manipulator and its working environment. The SDFs in the first group are to describe the geometric information of the static environment. The SDFs in the second group are to describe the geometric information of each link. While the SDFs in the last group are to describe the reachability of each link’s end of the manipulator. In the online stage, the precomputed local SDFs are chained together according the configuration of the manipulator, to provide global geometric information about the environment. While the point clouds of the dynamic objects serve as query points to look up these local SDFs for quickly generating escape velocity. Then we propose a modified geometric Jacobian matrix and use the Jacobian-pseudo-inverse method to generate real-time reflex behaviors to avoid the static and dynamic obstacles in the environment. In this work, we develop an open-source surgical simulation environment that includes a realistic model obtained by MRI-scanning a physical phantom, for the purpose of training and evaluating a Learning from Demonstration (LfD) algorithm for autonomous suturing. The LfD algorithm utilizes Dynamic Movement Primitives (DMP) and Locally Weighted Regression (LWR), but focuses on the needle trajectory, rather than the instruments, to obtain better generality with respect to needle grasps. We conduct a user study to collect multiple suturing demonstrations and perform a comprehensive analysis of the ability of the LfD algorithm to generalize from a demonstration at one location in one phantom to different locations in the same phantom and to a different phantom. Our results indicate good generalization, on the order of 91.5%, when learning from more experienced subjects, indicating the need to integrate skill assessment in the future. © 2024, CC BY.

A 5G ultra dense network architecture makes use of a high density of micro cell base stations to provide increased coverage, capacity, and performance for 5G communication systems. This is accomplished by the utilization of a very densely packed network. A 5G ultradense network is another name for this particular category of network. Ultradense networks are built to overcome the limitations of ordinary cellular networks. This is accomplished by increasing the number of base stations that are located inside a given area. This is performed by reducing the coverage area provided by each base station, which ultimately leads to an increase in the capacity of the entire network. The maximum data rate or capacity that may be obtained through a certain wireless channel is referred to as the 'channel capacity' in a 5G ultradense network, when the phrase 'channel capacity' is used. One possibility is that this represents the maximum quantity of data that can be transmitted across the channel. These criteria, which represent the capabilities of the channel, can be used to evaluate the performance of channels and equipment on 5G networks. This article presents for further research a model for improving the channel capacity of the 5G ultradense network. The model can be found at the end of the article. This change will result in an increase in both the usefulness of the channel and the amount of bandwidth that it consumes;both of these aspects will improve. The fact that it uses a very small quantity of energy and power in compared to other methods is the major trait that sets it apart from other methods. This technology is superior to others in terms of both the amount of data it can communicate and the amount of electricity it consumes in the process. © 2023 IEEE.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a type of diabetes mellitus that attacks the retina of the eye. DR will cause patients to experience blindness slowly. Generally, DR can be detected by using a special instrument called an ophthalmoscope to view the inside of the eyeball. However, in conditions where there is a very small difference between the normal image and the DR image, computer-based assistance is needed for maximizing image reading value. In this research, a method of image quality improvement will be carried out which will then be integrated with a classification algorithm based on deep learning. The results of image improvement using Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) shows that the average accuracy of the method on several models is very competitive, 91% for the VGG16 model, 95% for InceptionV3, and 97% for EfficientNet compared to the results original image which only has an accuracy of 87% for VGG16 model, 90% for InceptionV3 model, and 95% for EfficientNet. However, in ResNet34 better accuracy is obtained in the original image with an accuracy of 95% while in the CLAHE image the accuracy value is only 84%. The results of this comprehensive evaluation and recommendation of famous backbone networks can be useful in the computer-Aided diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy. © 2022 Elsevier B.V..
