Framework for Implementing Quantum Neural Networks in Wireless Communications

While quantum computing is already being employed in different domains to solve large scale and highly complex optimization problems, the wireless communications community has only recently begun exploring the potential of Quantum Machine Learning (QML). This paper provides a reference design approach that allows the wireless community to effectively leverage QML in optimizing their own wireless communications networks. Such an approach will become increasingly valuable as quantum computing matures and conventional computing methods reach their practical limits due to the high dimensionality of optimization problems. We present a detailed methodology enabling wireless communications practitioners to construct their own Quantum Neural Networks (QNN) implementations and benchmark their performance against conventional techniques. Optimization strategies for wireless communication channels using QNNs are explored. The resulting framework provides a generalizable, easy-to-adopt methodology for integrating QML into wireless networks, requiring minimal prior knowledge of quantum computing. © 2013 IEEE.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of chemicals used for their impressive stability, a property which has also led them to be found polluting virtually every sector of the environment-including our own bodies. Presently, our ability to destroy PFAS is limited largely to incineration, whose products and side effects are poorly understood. Research on PFAS incineration is constrained by high experimental costs and difficulty in accurately measuring reaction products. This presents an opportunity for computer simulation and machine learning to provide valuable assistance. In this study, three kinds of thermal PFAS decomposition are simulated. Further, to broaden physical understanding of PFAS incineration products, a recent in-house machine learning model for predicting the octanol-water partition coefficient (LogP) of chemicals is improved and applied to simulation results. A decrease in LogP is observed in all treatments, with the most dramatic effect (-2 average LogP) observed in oxidative pyrolysis. © 2023 IEEE.

Control theory is an important cornerstone of the robotics field and is considered a fundamental subject in an undergraduate and postgraduate robotics curriculum. Furthermore, project-based learning has shown significant benefits in engineering domains, specifically in interdisciplinary fields such as robotics which require hands-on experience to master the discipline adequately. However, designing a project-based learning experience to teach control theory in a hands-on setting can be challenging, due to the rigor of mathematical concepts involved in the subject. Moreover, access to reliable hardware required for a robotics control lab, including the robots, sensors, interfaces, and measurement instruments, may not be feasible in developing countries and even many academic institutions in the US. The current paper presents a set of six project-based assignments for an advanced postgraduate Robot Control course. The sequence of assignments naturally builds on each other, and by the end of the course, students will be able to develop an advanced control framework in a real-world robotic simulation setting. The assignments leverage the Robot Operating System (ROS), an open-source set of tools, libraries, and software, which is a de facto standard for the development of robotics applications. The use of ROS, along with its physics engine simulation framework, Gazebo, provides a hands-on robotics experience equivalent to working with real hardware. The topics incorporated in the assignments include a set of linear and nonlinear control concepts, including dynamics modeling and analysis of multibody robotic systems, Jacobian linearization and characterization of equilibria in nonlinear state-space models, stabilization via state-feedback control, state estimation and control via observer design, linear quadratic regulator (LQR) control, trajectory tracking using inverse dynamics and feedback linearization, Lyapunov-based robust control design, and the formulation of adap

The industrial operation of oxy-fuel metal cutting via gas torches involves tasks such as ignition, preheating, and combustion along the target surface. Automated oxy-fuel cutting systems are exposed to risks and anomalies that can lead to incorrect actions and safety hazards. In this paper, we develop a classifier for online task state estimation to assess the cutting robot's actions, detect anomalies, and reduce the risk of hazards. Using representative footage from our robotic cutting experiments, we curate an image dataset labeled with four types of cutting task states. Using deep learning methods, we design and train a convolutional neural network model for classifying the cutting task state from input images. The classifier architecture is optimized for rapid inferences during online estimation. After evaluation, our classifier achieves an overall accuracy of 93.8 % with high inference speeds on two types of representative hardware. Ultrasound (US) image-guided access is widely used in surgical operations such as percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and lumbar puncture (LP). One major challenge conventional US image-guided access faces is sustaining proper alignment between the needle path and the US image plane to maximize needle visibility, since the needle and the US transducer are controlled by each individual hand. Reflector-integrated ultrasound (ref-US) image-guided access was originally proposed to provide by-default alignment of the needle path and the image plane, however issues like bulky size, unconventional handling style and encapsulation of acoustic medium pose difficulties to clinical application of ref-US image-guided access. In this work we focused on improving clinical applicability of ref-US image-guided needle access mechanism. First, the size of the ref-US image guided access mechanism is minimized, and handling style of the mechanism is modified to follow the handling style of a normal ultrasound transducer by using double acoustic reflectors. Second, we use gel-like medium to encapsulate ref-US image-guided access mechanism to reduce imaging artifacts and to prevent medium leakage, while both are common issues in encapsulation using liquid medium. We conducted imaging validation using gelatin phantom with embedded point targets to show the mechanism's sensitivity to the needle tip and small targets. We also conducted insertion validation where needle is inserted into the kidney inside a pig cadaver using proposed ref-US image-guided access mechanism. Validation results indicate that the gap between the concept of ref-US image-guided access towards clinical applications has been bridged. © 2025 SPIE

Capillary rise within Dutch Twill Weave (DTW) woven wire screens is investigated due to importance in phase separation applications under variable gravity environments. Simulations of pure surface tension driven flow within a finite area of DTW screen to investigate the effects of varying surface energy and gravitational strength on the capillary performance of water wicking. Simulations are performed using realistic DTW screen domains and the volume of fluid (VOF) method. Results of benchmark cases for a capillary tube with diameter sized to warp wire spacing, show that there is an appreciable difference in wicking rate with high wettability and Lunar gravity compared to a neutrally wetting contact angle and Earth gravity. The use of a single Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) for the real-time evaluation of the local spatial and temporal gradient of the concentration in an underwater plume is presented. The gradient evaluation method is based on a Taylor expansion of five concentration measurements taken by the AUV along an optimized trajectory in 3D. The numerical implementation depends on the conditioning of the resulting matrix equation. A 6 DOF dynamical model for an AUV is used along with the advection-diffusion equation for a plume in 3D to generate synthetic data. Verification of the gradient evaluation method is obtained in 2D by comparisons of the spatial gradient obtained from the presented methods with analytical and high-fidelity numerical solutions. © 2025, American institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. This paper addresses the problem of sensor placement to assist a mobile vehicle that navigates in an unknown environment. We refer this spatially and temporally varying environment as a threat field. The vehicle is required to navigate with a minimum exposure to this field. We consider a sensor network separate from the mobile vehicle that provides a point wise noisy measurements of the threat field. We propose an iterative method, referred as coupled sensor configuration and path-planning (CSCP) to solve this problem. At each iteration, the optimal sensor configuration is determined by maximizing a metric that includes uncertainty reduction in a path cost and minimization of sensor movement. A context-relevant mutual information (CRMI) metric enables sensor placement in locations that reduce uncertainty in the path cost, rather than in the environment state. Sensor reconfiguration cost is computed based on the distance traveled by the sensors from a current set of locations to new locations. To address the problem of combinatorial growth in the feasible sensor configurations with increasing number of sensors, we execute greedy optimization of placing one sensor at a time. Once the new sensor locations are identified, the algorithm updates the threat estimate with new measurements, and recalculates the path with minimum expected exposure to the threat. We perform numerical simulations to show the effectiveness of the proposed method, and conduct comparative study between the CSCP method with and without incorporating the sensor reconfiguration cost. © 2025, American institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA.
