As the concept of smart cities continues to gain momentum, the integration of various technologies has become essential for creating sustainable and efficient urban environments. However, with the proliferation of interconnected devices and systems, the risk of network security threats has increased significantly. This research article aims to identify and analyze the main threats to network security in smart cities. By exploring the potential vulnerabilities and challenges posed by the interconnected infrastructure, this study provides insights into the key areas that require attention to ensure the resilience and protection of smart cities. The findings of this research emphasize the need for robust security measures and proactive strategies to mitigate the identified threats. © 2023 IEEE.

There has been active research focusing on lightweight approaches for on-device CNN training. Convolutional neural network (CNN) training requires a substantial amount of computation and memory footprint, particularly when compared with inference. However, in the case of on-device training, the available resources are limited, making it particularly challenging to train CNNs on-device. This study proposes a lightweight algorithm for CNN training in low-resource environments using parameter freezing techniques. The proposed method reduces the training load by employing a batch size of one and mitigates the computational overhead by using normalization freezing and modified weight optimization techniques. Furthermore, we propose a simple algorithm based on weight distribution to select the layers for freezing, thereby enabling efficient training. The proposed method is applied to Tiny-YOLOv3, demonstrating 52.10% computation reduction, 55.79% memory footprint reduction, and 21.95% accuracy improvement compared to the fully trained fine-tuned model.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is increasingly recognized as a pivotal technology for the sixth-generation communication networks, offering a unique ability to customize the communication environment by programming the passive surface. To fully exploit RISs' potential in improving the coverage and spectral efficiency, we focus on the beamforming design for a distributed-RIS-assisted communication system. However, it usually has the high computational complexity and difficulty to obtain the feasible solution due to non-linear constraints of distributed RISs. To solve this highly non-convex optimization problem of multiple variables, we propose a quantum annealing based method in this paper. Specifically, we firstly transform the original sum-of-log problem into a sub-problem in the form of Ising model by using the fractional programming. Then, we present an adiabatic theorem based algorithm for finding the ground state of the Ising model, and implement it on a Dwave's quantum annealing machine. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of our proposed method, demonstrating that the deployment of quantum annealing can significantly reduce the computational complexity from ON2 to O(N), and obtain an 8% performance gain compared with the typical baselines. © 2024 IEEE.

Secure aggregation is concerned with the task of securely uploading the inputs associated with multiple users to an aggregation server without revealing the user inputs to the server besides the summation of all inputs. It finds broad applications in distributed machine learning paradigms such as federated learning (FL). Motivated by practical hierarchical FL systems which utilize the client-edge-cloud network architecture to improve delay performance, we study the hierarchical secure aggregation (HSA) problem in a 3-layer hierarchical network where a total of $UV$ users are connected to an aggregation server through $U$ relay nodes each being associated with a disjoint subset of $V$ users. Security requires that the server learn nothing beyond the desired sum of the inputs (server security), and each relay learn nothing about the user inputs (relay security) even if they collude with up to $T$ users. We characterize the optimal communication and key rate region by proposing a novel secure aggregation scheme and deriving an information-theoretic converse that matches the achievable scheme. In particular, we show that when $T\geq(U-1)V$ , the proposed HSA problem is infeasible. Otherwise when $T < (U-1)V$ , to securely compute 1 bit of the desired sum, each user needs to upload at least 1 bit to its associating relay, each relay needs to upload at least 1 bit to the server, each user needs to hold at least 1 key bit, and all users need to collectively hold at least $\max\{V+T, \min\{U+T-1,UV- 1\}\}$ (source) key bits. The characterization of the source key rate is a major contribution of this work.

Motivated by recent advances in DNA-based data storage, we study a communication system, where information is conveyed over many sequences in parallel. In this system, the receiver cannot control the access to these sequences and can only draw from these sequences, unaware which sequence has been drawn. Further, the drawn sequences are susceptible to errors. In this paper, a suitable channel model that models this input-output relationship is analyzed and its information capacity is computed for a wide range of parameters and a general class of drawing distributions. This generalizes previous results for the noiseless case and specific drawing distributions. The analysis can guide future DNA-based data storage experiments by establishing theoretical limits on achievable information rates and by proposing decoding techniques that can be useful for practical implementations of decoders. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (in short, UAVs, aka drones) for cultural and entertainment purposes, such as drone light shows, has grown exponentially. One such innovative and creative application is the visual arts using drones to explore long-exposure photography. Light painting are generally performed indoors and outdoors in a dedicated space with a human using a moving light source to create spectacular images and save the movement perception in a picture. In this work, we propose a robotic perception system designed to choreograph UAV movements based on time-parametric curves or image edges, serving as reference motions. Our framework begins by processing a digital image, extracting its contours through boundary tracing, and subsequently generating a safe, navigable, and precise path for UAV motion planning. This process involves optimizing waypoints within the UAV workspace to determine a feasible trajectory that encompasses all designated points or computes safe trajectories utilizing established mathematical equations. The validation of the motion planning is performed through light painting, where the UAV can either fly through the motion reference to mimic the original image. The generated trajectories on light painting mode by physical robots are compared against the ground-truth demonstrating the accuracy of the applied control scheme.

Principles, Applications, and Challenges of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Enabled Backscatter Communication: A Comprehensive Survey and Outlook

Backscatter communication (BackCom) networks are expected to provide ultra-low-power transmission and massive connectivity in future wireless communication systems. Nevertheless, the double-fading effect significantly reduces signal intensity and is a primary problem of modern BackCom systems. Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) can artificially modify the wireless environment through numerous controllable reflecting elements. With the help of RIS, the desired signals in the BackCom procedure can be captured and reflected in the specified direction, which is able to alleviate the double-fading problem. Specifically, RIS can be a backscatter device to send information instead of a collaborator to enhance transmission, yielding the RIS-BackCom mechanism. However, a comprehensive review of this technique still needs to be made available, dramatically limiting its development. This paper presents the fundamental principles and functions of legacy BackCom systems, the RIS technique, and RIS-BackCom networks. Then, we discuss the system-level performance with different modulation and channel estimation approaches. Further, we introduce symbiotic radio (SR) networks developed from the RIS-BackCom technique. After that, we provide a survey on diverse optimization issues existing in the applications of RIS-BackCom networks. Finally, we envision emerging use scenarios, potential challenges, and possible solutions in future wireless communication networks. © 1998-2012 IEEE.

Elastography is an imaging technique with the ability to determine low quantities of some of the mechanical properties of *** aim of our research is to design a new 3D algorithm using the Shifted Fourier Transform(SFT)to perform a quasi-static *** innovative idea is implementation of a 3D convolution instead of using three 2D *** first,we collected the raw data from Abaqus engineering software in the form of breast tissue with a coefficient of elasticity of healthy tissue and tumor tissue with a coefficient of elasticity of tumor *** primary raw data consists of a number of points with x,y and z specified for tumor and healthy breast *** this step,we simulated the displacements in directions of x,y and z at each point of the prescribed tissues for 15 mm displacement of probe in–Y direction then we collected 1831 points for tumor and 4186 points for breast before and after *** applying a novel reconstruction algorithm,we convolved all images with the 3D Gabor filters to obtain phases,represented displacements of the breast and tumor images for before and after *** reach this goal,we designed a Gabor filter bank based on the dimensions of the input images in different scales,directions,and *** the 3D SFT,we calculated the displacements of the breast and tumor tissues followed by 3D elastogram representation of the ***,we implemented a 2D analysis of SFT in order to investigate validation of the 3D *** 2D algorithm,we used three two-dimensional convulsions in XY,YZ and XZ *** results obtained from the small displacements marked by circles,confirmed the accuracy of the 3D SFT *** areas of interest are the tumor areas in the 2D analysis.

Data poisoning attacks against recommender systems (RecSys) often assume a single seller as the adversary. However, in reality, there are usually multiple sellers attempting to promote their items through RecSys manipulation. To obtain the best data poisoning plan, it is important for an attacker to anticipate and withstand the actions of his opponents. This work studies the problem of Multiplayer Comprehensive Attack (MCA) from the perspective of the attacker, considering the subsequent attacks by his opponents. In MCA, we target the Heterogeneous RecSys, where user-item interaction records, user social network, and item correlation graph are used for recommendations. To tackle MCA, we present the Multilevel Stackelberg Optimization over Progressive Differentiable Surrogate (MSOPDS). The Multilevel Stackelberg Optimization (MSO) method is used to form the optimum strategies by solving the Stackelberg game equilibrium between the attacker and his opponents, while the Progressive Differentiable Surrogate (PDS) addresses technical challenges in deriving gradients for candidate poisoning actions. Experiments on Heterogeneous RecSys trained with public datasets show that MSOPDS outperforms all examined prior works by up to 10.6% in average predicted ratings and up to 11.4% in HitRate@3 for an item targeted by an attacker facing one opponent.
