Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) offers valuable insights into the human brain's functional organization and is a powerful tool for investigating the relationship between brain function and cognitive processes as it allows for the functional organization of the brain to be captured without relying on a specific task or stimuli. In this study, we introduce a novel attention mechanism for graphs with subnetworks, named Self Clustering Graph Transformer (SCGT), designed to handle the issue of uniform node updates in graph transformers. By using static functional connectivity (FC) correlation features as input to the transformer model, SCGT effectively captures the sub-network structure of the brain by performing cluster-specific updates to the nodes unlike uniform node updates like vanilla graph transformers, further allowing us to learn and interpret the sub clusters. We validate our approach on the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) dataset, comprising 7,957 participants, for the prediction of total cognitive score and gender classification. Our results demonstrate that SCGT outperforms the vanilla graph transformer method, and other recent models, offering a promising tool for modeling brain functional connectivity and interpreting the underlying subnetwork structures.

It has been a long-standing question whether cosmic rays promote the triggering of lightning and how cosmic-ray air showers interact with the electric field of thunderclouds. The strong electric field in the thunderclouds accelerates electrons to the relativistic regime, of which seed electrons are thought to be supplied from cosmic-ray air shower. Such relativistic electrons emit bremsstrahlung photons in gamma rays, which have been detected by on-ground measurements called gamma-ray glows. Low-altitude winter thunderstorm in Japan provides an ideal environment for observations of gamma-ray glows. We newly launched the citizen science "Thundercloud Project" to construct a multi-point radiation mapping campaign for glows from winter thunderstorms around Kanazawa, Japan. We developed a new handy radiation monitor and shipped about 60 detectors to citizen supporters. The radiation data are stored in the microSD cards in the detectors, and a part of them is remotely sent to the web server so that researchers and supporters can watch the real-time data. In addition, an automatic alert is sent to public Twitter from the server when a glow is detected. The purpose of this project is (1) to characterize the methodological condition of electron acceleration, (2) to investigate whether accelerated relativistic electrons can enhance the chance of the initiation of lightning discharges, and (3) to find a new way of the citizen science to join in the cutting edge science in the physics field. Here we report this growing citizen science project and examples of successful gamma-ray glow observations. Our first scientific result from this citizen science project was published in Tsurumi et al., GRL 2023 [1], where we reported lightning discharges started in or near the electron acceleration site of a gamma-ray glow. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

Advanced modulation and coding schemes (AMCS) are techniques used to enhance the records charge and throughput in satellite to for pc communications links with the aid of taking benefit of multiplexing, errors correction, and forward error-correction techniques. AMCS are designed to beautify records transmission from the satellite to the receiving station, as well as from the ground station to the satellite. When a signal is sent through a satellite hyperlink, a top restriction to its statistics charge is reached due to elements which include sign-to-noise ratio and the quantity of interference detected. With a proper combination of modulation and coding strategies, but, this upper restrict can be prolonged, accordingly improving throughput and reliability. AMCS use modulation techniques to encode records whilst coding techniques are used to manipulate and verify information integrity between the source and the vacation spot. Modulation strategies permit records signals to skip thru a transmission channel, together with a satellite to for pc link, through converting the traits of the signal consisting of the amplitude, frequency, or section. Coding techniques make sure that records may be reliably transmitted over the hyperlink by using adding redundant information to the authentic message. Such redundant statistics is used to detect and accurate any errors inside the facts that could occur during the transmission technique. © 2024 IEEE.

Critical nonlinear aspects of hopping transport for reconfigurable logic in disordered dopant networks

Nonlinear behavior in the hopping transport of interacting charges enables reconfigurable logic in disordered dopant network devices, where voltages applied at control electrodes tune the relation between voltages applied at input electrodes and the current measured at an output electrode. From kinetic Monte Carlo simulations we analyze the critical nonlinear aspects of variable-range hopping transport for realizing Boolean logic gates in these devices on three levels. First, we quantify the occurrence of individual gates for random choices of control voltages. We find that linearly inseparable gates such as the xor gate are less likely to occur than linearly separable gates such as the and gate, despite the fact that the number of different regions in the multidimensional control voltage space for which and or xor gates occur is comparable. Second, we use principal-component analysis to characterize the distribution of the output current vectors for the (00,10,01,11) logic input combinations in terms of eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the output covariance matrix. This allows a simple and direct comparison of the behavior of different simulated devices and a comparison to experimental devices. Third, we quantify the nonlinearity in the distribution of the output current vectors necessary for realizing Boolean functionality by introducing three nonlinearity indicators. The analysis provides a physical interpretation of the effects of changing the hopping distance and temperature and is used in a comparison with data generated by a deep neural network trained on a physical device.

This paper investigates the precise trajectory tracking of unmanned aerial vehicles(UAV) capable of vertical take-off and landing(VTOL) subjected to external disturbances. For this reason, a robust higher-order-observer-based dynamic sliding mode controller(HOB-DSMC) is developed and optimized using the fractional-order firefly algorithm(FOFA). In the proposed scheme, the sliding surface is defined as a function of output variables, and the higher-order observer is utilized to estimate the unmeasured variables,which effectively alleviate the undesirable effects of the chattering phenomenon. A neighboring point close to the sliding surface is considered, and as the tracking error approaches this point, the second control is activated to reduce the control input. The stability analysis of the closed-loop system is studied based on Lyapunov stability theorem. For a better study of the proposed scheme, various trajectory tracking tests are provided, where accurate tracking and strong robustness can be simultaneously ensured. Comparative simulation results validate the proposed control strategy′s effectiveness and its superiorities over conventional sliding mode controller(SMC) and integral SMC approaches.

The interaction between cosmic rays and thunderclouds has attracted much attention in recent years. Cosmic rays have been considered as one possible cause of the trigger of lightning flashes: e.g., a possible correlation between the number of observed lightning and cosmic ray flux (e.g.,Themis G. Chronis, journal of Climate,2009). In thunderclouds, electric fields are thought to cause relativistic acceleration of electrons as an interaction with cosmic ray air shower and emit bremsstrahlung photons, known as gamma-ray glows. One unresolved is that such electron acceleration, and thus gamma-ray glows, may be related to initiating lightning flashes. To verify this hypothesis, we conducted winter thundercloud observations using mapping radiation measurements in Japan. At 04:06–04:08 JST on December 30, 2021, five radiation detectors recorded a gamma-ray glow, terminated with the lightning flash recorded by two lightning mapping systems (FALMA and DALMA). Our multi-location observation revealed that the gamma-ray glow region had a horizontal size of about 2 km×2.5 km. The XRAIN radar observation showed that the high reflectivity area, presumably corresponding to the electron acceleration region, reaches more than 2 km above the gamma-ray detected radiation detectors. The initiation of this lightning discharge started from 1.6 km altitude from the ground around the gamma-ray glow region [1]. This result indicates that the lightning flash began in the vicinity of the electric field region and a possible connection between the cosmic ray interaction with the electric fields in thundercloud and the triggering of the lightning flash. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

In the human pose estimation task, on the one hand, 3-D pose always has difficulty in dividing different 2-D poses if the view is limited;on the other hand, it is hard to reduce the lifting ambiguity because of the lack of depth information, it is an important and challenging problem. Therefore, two-stage representation refinement based on the convex combination for 3-D human pose estimation is proposed, in which the two-stage method includes a dense-spatial-temporal convolutional network and a local-to-refine network. The former is applied to determine the features between each video frame;the latter is used to get the different scales of pose details. It aims to address the difficulty of estimating 3-D human pose from 2-D image sequences. In such a way, it can better use the relations between every frame in the sequence of the pose video to produce more accurate results. Finally, we combine the above network with a block called convex combination to help refine the 3-D pose location. We test the proposed approach on both Human3.6m and MPII datasets. The result confirms that our method can achieve better performance than improved CNN supervision, a simple yet effective baseline, and coarse-to-fine volumetric prediction. Besides, a robustness test experiment is carried out for the proposed method while the input is interrupted. The result verifies that our method shows better robustness. © 2024 IEEE.

Itinerant ferromagnetism is understood in terms of a quasiparticle picture with renormalized many-body effects. While the ferromagnetic ground state is destabilized by thermal and quantum fluctuations leading to exotic states such as unconventional superconductivity, how the quasiparticles evolve across the ferromagnetic transition is a target of intensive debate. Here, we present a type of ferromagnetic transition that is accompanied by a drastic reconstruction of quasiparticle spectrum in a layered ferromagnetic ruthenate, Sr4Ru3O10. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy uncovered that the three-dimensional coherent states below the ferromagnetic transition temperature (TC) turn into two-dimensional incoherent electronic states slightly above TC characterized by the disappearance of trilayer band splitting, ferromagnetic exchange splitting, and long-lived quasiparticles. Our findings suggest that the electronic coherence strongly modifies the fermiology and magnetic order, pointing to an intriguing coupling between quasiparticles and magnetic properties.

Optimal transport (OT) is a framework that can guide the design of efficient resource allocation strategies in a network of multiple sources and targets. This paper applies discrete OT to a swarm of UAVs in a novel way to achieve appropriate task allocation and execution. Drone swarm deployments already operate in multiple domains where sensors are used to gain knowledge of an environment [1]. Use cases such as, chemical and radiation detection, and thermal and RGB imaging create a specific need for an algorithm that considers parameters on both the UAV and waypoint side and allows for updating the matching scheme as the swarm gains information from the environment. Additionally, the need for a centralized planner can be removed by using a distributed algorithm that can dynamically update based on changes in the swarm network or parameters. To this end, we develop a dynamic and distributed OT algorithm that matches a UAV to the optimal waypoint based on one parameter at the UAV and another parameter at the waypoint. We show the convergence and allocation of the algorithm through a case study and test the algorithm’s effectiveness against a greedy assignment algorithm in simulation.

Continuously measuring the speaking state of users with robot in a human-robot Interaction(HRI) system improves metrics of interaction quality. Meanwhile, mainstream active speaker detection (ASD) algorithms emphasize achieving high AUCs at frame level in the AVA-Active Speaker dataset and pay less attention to get real-time performance in robotic systems. In this paper, we propose a model named FSDNet to keep a high AUC score in the AVA-Active Speaker dataset while reducing time cost, our model increase AUC score by 0.1% compared with the State-Of-The-Art and need only 75% running time. Furthermore, we put forward an architecture with a time-related prediction function to make our algorithm more effective and generative in interactive robotic systems.
