When a three-phase squirrel-cage induction motor is to be started with an electronic soft-starter, the respective stator winding can be designed for nominal power with delta, star or star-delta connection. If the motor has two sets of windings sharing the same slots, which may be connected in series or parallel, more connection modes are possible. In this paper, on the basis of a theoretical approach, simulations, and some experiments, a comparative analysis of the tolerance to voltage unbalance of the delta, star and star-delta stator winding connections is presented, offering a new perspective on this issue. It is demonstrated that, under unbalanced voltage supply condition, these stator winding connection modes have a different performance in terms of phase voltage and current unbalance ratios.

The paper presents the current state of research on developing a computer-assisted surgical trainer to be used in a minimally-invasive surgery training program. Along with wide adoption of laparoscopic surgery a strong need for systematic training in the field of minimally-invasive surgery has developed. The goal of the described system is to provide surgeons specialising in minimally-invasive operating techniques an objective performance evaluation method and a safe setting for practicing elementary laparoscopic skills.

This paper presents a proper model and methodology to improve the efficiency class of a squirrel-cage induction motor during rewinding. The modeling approach is based on the finite element model, i.e. two-dimensional model coupled with the rotor equivalent circuit (first stage) and the stator equivalent circuit (second stage). Results obtained with finite element analysis are compared with those obtained with analytical calculations. It is demonstrated that, during rewinding, if an improved winding configuration is used, efficiency gains can be obtained, allowing to improve the efficiency class of the motor, from IE2 to IE3, respecting the specified limits of NEMA & IEC performance indicators, namely, breakdown torque, locked-rotor torque, and locked-rotor current. In 79% of the simulated cases the efficiency gain allowed the studied motor to reach the IE3 class.

Brain-computer Interface (BCI) is a very essential and useful communication tool between the human brain and external devices. Effective and accurate classification of Electroencephalography (EEG) signals is important in performance of BCI systems. In this paper, a mental task classification approach based on sparse representation is proposed. A dictionary is used for classification, which is the combination of power spectral density calculated from EEG signal and common spatial pattern (CSP) algorithm. L1 minimization was used to classify EEG signals. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides higher classification performance compared to SVM and KNN classifiers. Based on the results average accuracy rates are as follows: 91.50%, 82.83%, 77.50% and 74%, for two, three, four and five classes, respectively.

This article explores the influence of the concentrated carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) gas on the different Phase Shift Keying (PSK) modulations used for Optical Wireless Communication (OWC) links. In this work, the OWC consisted of a laser diode, a photodetector, and a transmission medium. The Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) unit created and evaluated the PSK modulations. This unit modulated the laser diode on the transmitter side and demodulated the data which were received by the photodetector on the receiver side. The CO 2 gas was emitted as a consequence of sublimation of the solid carbon dioxide in hot water. The measurements were done in a closed box in laboratory. The CO 2 gas is a one element of smog which pollutes cities now and then. Our experimental results with CO 2 gas could help to choose a suitable modulation scheme for OWC which are installed in cities with smog-polluted atmospheric conditions.
