Mott insulator plays a central role in strongly correlated physics, where the repulsive Coulomb interaction dominates over the electron kinetic energy and leads to insulating states with one electron occupying each unit cell.1,2 Doped Mott insulator is often described by the Hubbard model3, which can give rise to other correlated phenomena such as unusual magnetism and even high temperature superconductivity2,4. A tunable Mott insulator, where the competition between the Coulomb interaction and the kinetic energy can be varied in situ, can provide an invaluable model system for the study of Mott physics. Here we report the realization of such a tunable Mott insulator in the ABC trilayer graphene (TLG) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) heterostructure with a moiré superlattice. Unlike massless Dirac electrons in monolayer graphene5,6, electrons in pristine ABC TLG are characterized by quartic energy dispersion and large effective mass7-11 that are conducive for strongly correlated phenomena. The moiré superlattice12-18 in TLG/hBN heterostructures leads to narrow electronic minibands that are gatetunable. Each filled miniband contains 4 electrons in one moiré lattice site due to the spin and valley degeneracy of graphene. The Mott insulator states emerge at 1/4 and 1/2 fillings, corresponding to one electron and two electrons per site, respectively. Moreover, the Mott states in the ABC TLG/hBN heterostructure exhibit unprecedented tunability: The Mott gap can be modulated in situ by a vertical electrical field, and at the mean time the electron doping can be gate-tuned to fill the band from one Mott insulating state to another. Our observation of a tunable Mott insulator opens up exciting opportunities to explore novel strongly correlated phenomena in two-dimensional moiré superlattice heterostructures. In this paper, we present the dynamical equations of a nonlinear adaptive natural oscillator (NANO) in order to exploit the natural dynamics in robotic systems. The presented oscillator tries to minimize an energy-based cost function by adapting the shape and frequency of the reference trajectory. Stability, convergence, and optimality of this oscillator are guaranteed analytically. Moreover, the performance of this oscillator is investigated by applying it to three different types of robotic models;i.e., the pendulum, the adaptive-toy, and the hopper-leg.

This paper studies the leader-following consensus problem for double-integrator dynamics with *** on the sampled position and velocity data,the distributed sampled control protocols are designed by using the periodic sampling technology and zero-order hold circuit.A sufficient condition for the leader-following consensus protocols using the sampleddata are obtained based on the sampling period,coupling gains and the eigenvalues of the Laplacian *** simulation examples are presented for illustration.

Norm optimal iterative learning control(NOILC) has recently been applied to iterative learning control(ILC) problems in which tracking is only required at a subset of isolated time points along the trial duration. This problem addresses the practical needs of many applications, including industrial automation, crane control, satellite positioning and motion control within a medical stroke rehabilitation context. This paper provides a substantial generalization of this framework by providing a solution to the problem of convergence at intermediate points with simultaneous tracking of subsets of outputs to reference trajectories on subintervals. This formulation enables the NOILC paradigm to tackle tasks which mix "point to point" movements with linear tracking requirements and hence substantially broadens the application domain to include automation tasks which include welding or cutting movements, or human motion control where the movement is restricted by the task to straight line and/or planar segments. A solution to the problem is presented in the framework of NOILC and inherits NOILC s well-defined convergence properties. Design guidelines and supporting experimental results are included.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). In this paper, we propose a new method for implementing a rotational nonlinear spring with user defined profile, based on the combination of a linear spring with a nonlinear transmission mechanism. The proposed structure consists of a non-circular cam, a roller which moves along outer circumference of the cam, and a stretched translational linear spring which is connected between center of the cam and center of the roller. We obtain a set of differential equations to design shape of the cam for any given torque-angle profile. Also, it will be shown that profiles with both positive and negative values can be implemented by the proposed method. At last, the cam of some popular nonlinear springs are designed, including constant, cubic, hyperbolic tangent and sinusoidal springs.

We focus our attention on the effectiveness of punishing defectors in the evolution of cooperation in rational populations within the threshold public goods game models. We establish two scenarios: defectors will suffer possible punishment whether the game succeeds or not, and defectors will incur punishment only when game fails. A key observation of this paper is that given this assumption, punishing free riders can significantly influence the evolution outcomes, and the results are driven by the specific components of the punishing rule. Particularly, probably punishing defectors always, not only when game fails,can be more effective for maintaining public cooperation and leads to higher total contributions. Intriguingly when defectors face punishment only when game fails, the spread and domination of cooperators can not be ensured even by sufficiently large punishment, which already brings payoff advantages of defectors over cooperators. Further, cooperators are best supported by the large punishment on defectors, and then dominate and stabilize in the population, under the premise that defectors always incur punishment regardless of whether the game ends successfully or not. We hope this work provides some intriguing hints or insights on investigating the collective behaviors by the aid of punishment mechanism.

The breathing adjuster is the core component of life support system of an aircraft and it is very important to control the valve to make the breathing adjuster supply the pilot the mixed air with the suitable oxygen concentration. In this paper the mathematical model, which describes the relation between the opening degree of the valve of the breathing adjuster and the flight altitude of the aircraft, is set up through analyzing requirement of aviation physiology and working principles of the breathing adjuster. Then a fuzzy controller is designed to control the opening degree of the valve in order to make the breathing adjuster supply to the pilot the mixed air with suitable oxygen concentration. Finally MATLAB Simulink is employed to verify the feasibility and validity of the fuzzy controlling approach. The results of simulating experiments show that the fuzzy control approach proposed in this paper can make the breathing adjuster supply the mixed air with suitable oxygen concentration to the pilot boarded on an aircraft.
