Various types of promising techniques have come into being for influence maximization whose aim is to identify influential nodes in complex networks. In essence, real-world applications usually have high requirements on the balance between time complexity and accuracy of influential nodes identification. To address the challenges of imperfect node influence measurement and inefficient seed nodes selection mechanism in such class of foregoing techniques, this article proposes a novel approach called Cost-Effective Community-Hierarchy-Based Mutual Voting for influence maximization in complex networks. First, we develop a method for measuring the importance of different nodes in networks based on an original concept of Dual-Scale Community-Hierarchy Information that synthesizes both hierarchy structural information and community structural information of nodes. The community structural information contained in the nodes is measured by a new notion of Hierarchical-Community Entropy. Second, we develop a method named Cost-Effective Mutual-Influence-based Voting for seed nodes selection. Hereinto, a low-computational-cost mutual voting mechanism and an updating strategy called Lazy Score Updating Strategy are newly constructed for optimizing the selecting of seed nodes. Third, we develop a balance index to evaluate the performance of different methods in striking the tradeoff between time complexity and the accuracy of influential nodes identification. Finally, we demonstrate the approach performance over ten public datasets. The extensive experiments show that the proposed approach outperforms 16 state-of-the-art techniques on the balance between time complexity and accuracy of influential nodes identification. Compared with the method with the second highest value of the balance index, our approach can be improved by at most 9.29%. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Plant-derived crop residue on soil surface provides many important advantages including preventing erosion and conserving soil moisture. In that sense, making accurate determination on the percent of crop residue cover using RGB images can be a fundamental tool in protecting the soil. In our research, we approach the determination of such percentages as a classification problem, and in this paper, we compare two of these approaches. Both approaches relied on support vector machines (SVM) as the classifier of choice, and the same set of features, which were selected in our previous studies on the same topic. In this paper we developed a SVM ensemble with a hierarchical structure and compared it against a single, multi-class SVM classifier. In the SVM ensemble framework, four two-class SVMs and one five-class SVM were combined in sequence to better separate adjacent levels of residue cover. The rationale of the ensemble was to allow each of the two-class SVMs to find the hyperplanes that maximize the margin between the corresponding two consecutive classes. Then, based on the distance of the samples to these hyperplanes, probabilistic estimates of the data-point belonging to the class were computed and added as extra inputs for the last SVM. In order to enhance the performance of the ensemble, other considerations such as the use of Grid Search method for optimizing the hyperparameters were employed in the tuning of the SVMs. Numerical experiments were conducted over a dataset of 4,400 images, which were collected from 88 locations in 40 row crop fields in five Missouri counties between mid-April and early July in 2018 and 2019. The images were collected using a camera mounted on a tripod, with a spatial resolution of 0.014 cm pixel- 1 GSD (Ground Sampling Distance). The experiments highlighted the better performance of the proposed hierarchical ensemble classifier, which achieved a cross-validation accuracy of 86.3 % vs an accuracy of 80.4 % for the single SVM, whil

Investigating the Vision Transformer Model for Image Retrieval Tasks

This paper introduces a plug-and-play descriptor that can be effectively adopted for image retrieval tasks without prior initialization or preparation. The description method utilizes the recently proposed Vision Transformer network while it does not require any training data to adjust parameters. In image retrieval tasks, the use of Handcrafted global and local descriptors has been very successfully replaced, over the last years, by the Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN)-based methods. However, the experimental evaluation conducted in this paper on several benchmarking datasets against 36 state-of-the-art descriptors from the literature demonstrates that a neural network that contains no convolutional layer, such as Vision Transformer, can shape a global descriptor and achieve competitive results. As fine-tuning is not required, the presented methodology’s low complexity encourages adoption of the architecture as an image retrieval baseline model, replacing the traditional and well adopted CNN-based approaches and inaugurating a new era in image retrieval approaches. © 2021, CC BY.

Generative AI (GAI) has emerged as a significant advancement in artificial intelligence, renowned for its language and image generation capabilities. This paper presents "AIGenerated Everything" (AIGX), a concept that extends GAI beyond mere content creation to real-time adaptation and control across diverse technological domains. In networking, AIGX collaborates closely with physical, data link, network, and application layers to enhance real-time network management that responds to various system and service settings as well as application and user requirements. Networks, in return, serve as crucial components in further AIGX capability optimization through the AIGX lifecycle, i.e., data collection, distributed pre-training, and rapid decision-making, thereby establishing a mutually enhancing interplay. Moreover, we offer an in-depth case study focused on power allocation to illustrate the interdependence between AIGX and networking systems. Through this exploration, the article analyzes the significant role of GAI for networking, clarifies the ways networks augment AIGX functionalities, and underscores the virtuous interactive cycle they form. This article paves the way for subsequent future research aimed at fully unlocking the potential of GAI and networks. © 2023, CC BY.

Cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications is an enabling technology to transmit control signaling or payload data for UAVs through cellular networks. Due to the line-of-sight (LoS) dominant air-to-ground channels, efficient interference mitigation is crucial to UAV communications, while the conventional fixed-position antenna (FPA) arrays have limited degrees of freedom (DoFs) to suppress the interference between the UAV and its non-associated co-channel base stations (BSs). To address this challenge, we propose in this letter a new approach by utilizing the six-dimensional movable antenna (6DMA) arrays to enhance the interference mitigation for the UAV. Specifically, we propose an efficient block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm to iteratively optimize the antenna position vector (APV), array rotation vector (ARV), receive beamforming vector, and associated BS of the UAV to maximize its signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). Numerical results show that the proposed 6DMA enhanced cellular-connected UAV communication can significantly outperform that with the traditional FPA arrays and other benchmark schemes in terms of interference mitigation. An augmented longitudinal rigid-body model is developed with a set of algebra equations describing the controls in the cockpit and the differential equations describing the pilot inherent limitations. The landing procedure after one engine failure is formulated into a nonlinear optimal control problem. XV-15 tilt-rotor aircraft is taken as the sample for the demonstration of landing in one engine failure during short takeoff. The results show that the total power required, thrust coefficient, longitudinal flapping angle and optimal controls are more relatively gentle than the solutions without considering the pilot inherent limitations. Compared with the basic longitudinal rigid-body model, the optimal solutions involve more control information.

This paper deals with an intelligent decision-making strategy of energy management for a smart grid within an element storage in order to reduce the system cost and improve its reliability. Indeed, the integration of distributed energy storage devices allows the customers to store energy and reuse at a later time or delayed some appliances operation according to a time-varying price signal. The adopted strategy is based on an artificial intelligence control algorithm “fuzzy logic”. The main objective is to determine the appropriate source (grid or battery) used for meeting the consumer. The decision solution shows the system reliability where the switches are synchronized. Switches draw electricity from the grid for both load and battery when price is low and in contrary when electricity price is high, we find a variation's price correspondance with the switch drawing electricity from the battery. The obtained results are verified carrying out Matlab simulation using real data such as the electricity price (Price (t)) and the battery state of charge (SOC (t)).

Angel's girl for blind painters: An efficient painting navigation system validated by multimodal evaluation approach

For people who ardently love painting but unfortunately have visual impairments, holding a paintbrush to create a work is a very difficult task. People in this special group are eager to pick up the paintbrush, like Leonardo da Vinci, to create and make full use of their own talents. Therefore, to maximally bridge this gap, we propose a painting navigation system to assist blind people in painting and artistic creation. The proposed system is composed of cognitive system and guidance system. The system adopts drawing board positioning based on QR code, brush navigation based on target detection and bush real-time positioning. Meanwhile, this paper uses human-computer interaction on the basis of voice and a simple but efficient position information coding rule. In addition, we design a criterion to efficiently judge whether the brush reaches the target or not. According to the experimental results, the thermal curves extracted from the faces of testers show that it is relatively well accepted by blindfolded and even blind testers. With the prompt frequency of 1s, the painting navigation system performs best with the completion degree of 89% ± 8.37% and overflow degree of 347% ± 162.14%. Meanwhile, the excellent and good types of brush tip trajectory account for 74%, and the relative movement distance is 4.21 ± 2.51. This work demonstrates that it is practicable for the blind people to feel the world through the brush in their hands. In the future, we plan to deploy "Angle's Eyes" on the phone to make it more portable. In the third millennium, developing countries will confront significant environmental problems such as ozone depletion, global warming, the shortage of fossil resources, and greenhouse gas emissions. This research looked at a multigenerational system that can generate clean hydrogen, fresh water, electricity, heat, and cooling. The system's components include Rankine and Brayton cycles, an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC), flash desalination, an Alkaline electrolyzer, and a solar heliostat. The proposed process has been compared for two different start-up modes with a combustion chamber and solar heliostat to compare renewable and fossil fuel sources. This research evaluated various characteristics, including turbine pressure, system efficiency, solar radiation, and isentropic efficiency. The energy and exergy efficiency of the proposed system were obtained at around 78.93% and 47.56%, respectively. Exergy study revealed that heat exchangers and alkaline electrolyzers had the greatest exergy destruction rates, at 78.93% and 47.56%, respectively. The suggested system produces 0.04663 kg/s of hydrogen. Results indicate that at the best operational conditions, the exergetic efficiency, power, and hydrogen generation of 56%, 6000 kW, and 1.28 kg/s is reached, respectively. Also, With a 15% improvement in the Brayton cycle's isentropic efficacy, the quantity of hydrogen produced increases from 0.040 kg/s to 0.0520 kg/s. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd
