Among other functions, the smart grid is a vehicle to maximize the penetration of wind power by exploiting the use of energy storage devices in order to maximize the utilization of renewable energy and bring about maximum reduction in emissions. Large number of electric vehicles in a parking lot enabled to carry out vehicle-to-grid (V2G) transactions has been termed as a `SmartPark' by the author. The use of vehicle-to-grid technology, information technology and advanced computational methods can provide short term real and reactive power support to overcome the drawback of the intermittent nature of renewable sources of electricity. This paper presents the intelligent control of SmartParks to enhance a smart grid's capability to compensate and mitigate active and reactive power fluctuations caused by the variability in wind power penetration in selected transmission lines and network buses.

This paper proposes a new method for the classification of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images based on a novel feature vector. The method aims at combining intensity information of pixels with spatial information and structural relationships. Unlike classical approaches which define a static neighborhood and relate spatial information for each center pixel to all the pixels within that window, the local primitives (LPs) proposed in this study provide us with an adaptive neighborhood for each pixel. LPs correspond to a certain number of layers of local homogenous connected components. Using LPs, a feature vector (local primitive pattern, LPP) is constructed for each pixel. The feature vector includes information about the sizes and contrast differences of LPs within a disk as well as the repetitive frequency of LPs outside that disk. To test the efficiency of LPP, support vector machine (SVM) classification is utilized.

This paper presents new innovative subsystems of the ER11 prototype urban vehicle which is powered by hydrogen fuel cells and ultra-capacitors. The subsystems described here are: 1) the energy management system, which is responsible for the optimization of the fuel efficiency and the increased mileage of the vehicle, 2) the driver's monitoring and control panel and 3) the power transmission system, which offers the possibility of continuous change of gear. The powertrain of the test-bed vehicle consists of an electric motor, a fuel (Η2) cell system, an ultra-capacitor bank and a DC/DC converter. Testing verified that the proposed energy management system is benefitted by the variable transmission of power leading to less fuel consumption.

The implementation of automated regulatory control has been around since the middle of the last century through analog means. It has allowed engineers to operate the plant more consistently by focusing on overall operations and settings instead of individual monitoring of local instruments (inside and outside of a control room). A similar approach is proposed for cyber security, where current border-protection designs have been inherited from information technology developments that lack consideration of the high-reliability, high consequence nature of industrial control systems. Instead of an independent development, however, an integrated approach is taken to develop a holistic understanding of performance. This performance takes shape inside a multi-agent design, which provides a notional context to model highly decentralized and complex industrial process control systems, the nervous system of critical infrastructure. The resulting strategy will provide a framework for researching solutions to security and unrecognized interdependency concerns with industrial control systems.

Recent years have witnessed an exciting progress in mobile visual search with applications to location recognition and streaming augmented reality. Most existing works among them are deployed with reference images coming from street views in urban scene. In such scenario, an interesting yet untouched problem is how to determine the viewing angle of the visual query aside of search, which could benefit multidisciplinary applications such as purifying the visual matching and accelerating the streaming AR. In this paper, we study the viewing angle estimation by exploiting the visual appearance of the query, which might be further improved by incorporating the coarse mobile context such as gyro or compass information. Our main idea is to treat this problem as a scene classification problem, upon which the key design is an optimal visual signature to reveal diversity of different viewing angles. We introduce a novel layout based viewing angle descriptor, which is based on carefully designed spatial division as well as appearance feature like color, texture and gradient. We have validated our approach on our dataset containing 1232 street view images in the urban areas of Manhattan, New York City. We show that our proposed descriptor has outperformed several alternatives in holistic image representations, including GIST, HOG and bag-of-feature with spatial pyramid matching.

This paper addresses the problem of Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) for navigation systems equipped with sensors providing inertial measurements and vector observations. Two strategies are proposed. The first one takes advantage of existing hardware redundancy, providing sufficient conditions for the isolation of faults. The second approach exploits the analytical redundancy between the angular velocity measurements and the vector observations, by resorting to Set-Valued Observers (SVOs). The behavior of both strategies are illustrated in simulation.

Robotic manipulator is designed and analyzed at patient end which includes force and current sensors that allows the operator to get force, size and tactile feedback at the surgeon end. Three methods of feedback are used i.e. force sensors for exact force estimation, current sensing for tactile feedback and position estimation to replicate motion. The three mentioned methods are analyzed and developed on the PC. Graphs are obtained for objects of different strength and size by experiments on the gripper at the end of robotic manipulator. Master-Slave topology is used to attain some benefits over conventional control systems in term of ergonomics, accuracy and timing etc. Interactive GUI at master end shows us forces, size and motions at each joint of the slave unit. Gripper, yaw and pitch motion of robotic manipulator at slave or patient end is also controlled by surgeon using master controller.

Fluorescence has become a widely used technique for applications in noninvasive diagnostic tissue spectroscopy. The standard model used for characterizing fluorescence photon transport in biological tissue is based on the diffusion approximation. On the premise that the total energy of excitation and fluorescent photon flows must be conserved, we derive the widely used diffusion equations in fluorescence spectroscopy and show that there must be an additional term to account for the transport of fluorescent photons. The significance of this additional term in modeling fluorescence spectroscopy in biological tissue is assessed.
