Robots are being designed to provide companionship, but there is some concern that they could lead to a reduction in human contact for vulnerable populations. However, some field data suggests that robots may have a social mediation effect in humanhuman interactions. This study examined social mediation effects in a controlled laboratory setting. In this study 114 unacquainted female volunteers were put in pairs and randomised to interact together with an active Paro, an inactive Paro, or a dinosaur toy robot. Each pair was invited to evaluate and interact with the robot together during a ten minute session. Post-interaction questionnaires measured the quality of dyadic interaction between participants during the session. Our results indicate that the strongest social mediation effect was from the active Paro.

The application of the Information and Communication Technologies to different disciplines such as surgical education opens new possible ways to carry out teaching and learning processes. While surgery used to be linked to the use of physical models, techniques such as Virtual Reality make possible new and more economic ways to learn. Virtual reality allows students to practice with virtual objects, with a very low cost. This may help those students to develop different skills. Some of them can be related with touch sense, which involves the addition of haptic interfaces to virtual reality simulators. The present work does not aim to do a specific haptic simulator to learn a surgical technique;the idea is to present a framework to build haptic surgical simulators to be used with educational proposes. In order to increase users motivation in the simulations are represented as serious games. The information of the simulations is sent to the LMS in a transparent way for the user, and once there students and teachers can evaluate it. In this way the framework enables the definition of serious games based in haptic simulations.

Cellular Automata represent a formal frame for dynamical systems which evolve on the base of local interactions. We here present first results of the CUDA parallelization of the SCIDDICA S3-hex Complex Cellular Automata model for simulating debris flows. In particular, a first strategy for the parallelization of the model is based on a straightforward one thread - one cell approach, where each cell in the cellular space is computed by a CUDA thread. A second approach concerns the adoption of a list of CA computational active cells which is handled step by step by an efficient stream compaction algorithm, in order to reduce the excessive use of computationally inactive threads. First results performed on different graphic processors have shown that, by adopting the different CUDA strategies, this kind of hardware can be effective for landslide risk mitigation.

Recent advances in soft sensors using microfluidic liquid conductors enabled sensing of large deformation of soft structures. However, the use of liquids as conductive media carries a risk of leakage in many cases. Furthermore, it could be harmful when exposed to the human body in certain applications. To address these issues, a different sensing mechanism was proposed: highly stretchable optical sensors that could detect multiple modes of deformation. The method of operation involves a simple waveguide and its housing which are both made of silicone elastomer. The soft waveguide is coated with a thin gold reflective layer to encapsulate light propagating internally, with an light-emitting diode (LED) and a photodiode embedded at each end. When the sensor is stretched, compressed, or bent, micro-cracks within the reflective layer form and allow part of the light to escape, resulting in optical power losses in the light transmission. In this paper, we describe the design and fabrication of the proposed soft sensors. A prototype was created and characterized for pressure, strain, and curvature up to 350 kPa, 90%, and 0.12 mm~(-1), respectively, showing promising results of reasonable repeatability and linearity in certain ranges.

In this paper, we propose a hybrid FUZZY P + ID controller to stabilize the towing cable tension between a cable ship and a burying system. First, we develop the model of a winch system driven by valve-controlled hydraulic motors and evaluate the step responses yielded by the conventional PID and the proposed FUZZY P+ID controllers using simulations. The comparative studies show that the control performance yielded by the FUZZY P+ID controller is superior. We replace the existing PID controller implemented on the towing winch with the FUZZY P + ID controller for burying cable tasks at speed up to 1 knot under sea waves with significant variations (peak-to-peak) from 1.5 to 2.5 meters. The real applications demonstrate that the FUZZY P + ID controller is much more robust than the conventional PID controller.
