We provide an overview of the DAME project, and a discussion of the progress made to date on the development of a distributed aeroengine diagnosis environment as a proof of concept demonstration for grid computing. We discuss the development of a demonstration diagnosis workbench system for this complex, data intensive, diagnosis application that must be operated as a distributed 'virtual organisation'. We describe the core diagnosis applications that have been implemented as grid services, and explain how these services are being deployed within the overall diagnosis process

Over the past 10 years there have been rapid advances in wireless and internet technologies. In the case of Fieldbuses many years of standardisation effort have failed to produce a single standard. However, the availability of cheap Ethernet-based networking hardware and PC technology driven by the huge office IT market coupled with the explosion of Internet has made Ethernet an attractive proposition for control and monitoring systems. This has led to parallel developments in Industrial Ethernet and standards specific to the aviation industry. Additionally, the advent of low cost mobile telephone technology and wireless interconnect for PC and electrical goods is driving interest in the adoption of this technology in other areas. Already products are appearing on the market which exploit this technology and many applications exist. This overview presents an introduction and overview of the current state of the technology as a result of studies performed by the author for rolls-royce into potential exploitation of these technologies in rolls-royce aircraft, marine and industrial systems. In particular, the application of Ethernet and wireless technologies for on-board systems, remote operational monitoring, testing and control will be considered.

This paper focuses on multi-objective optimisation of staged combustion control for aviation gas turbine engines. Pareto optimisation based multi-objective genetic algorithms are used to design the fuel distribution control laws of a staged combustor. The results of control system parameter optimisation over International Civil Aviation Organisation Landing and Take-off cycle and the typical engine operation condition are presented. An analysis of the control-related issues for optimal fuel distribution is presented.

The design of complex systems such as the Lift control System for a vertical take-off and landing aircraft poses challenging problems. It is necessary to consider the design of the system from the point of view of many design disciplines to optimise acquisition and operating support costs, weight, maintainability and availability of the system. A design process, based on multiobjective optimisation and employing evolutionary computing methods is described and its application demonstrated on this application.

Recent advances in smart actuator and fieldbus technologies are promoting changes in fault-tolerant control design issues. In this paper, a smart actuator scheme is implemented based on a low-cost stepper-motor and CAN bus interface. In order to enhance fault-tolerance capability of the control system, the proposed scheme is focused on self-diagnosis and self-compensation of undesirable actuator characteristics produced by faults. Experimental results with a distributed architecture demonstrator show that actuator faults can be accommodated successfully without a redundant actuator by using the proposed smart actuator scheme.
